Two days later Evdokimoff opened the paper as he sipped his morning coffee.

“During construction of the Metropolitan Police’s future headquarters, workmen found human remains in the cellar.”The Count read further down the report and put the paper down. He tutted to himself.

‘Dear me, Jaak you are a naughty boy.’ He looked at Mikhailovich and smiled.

‘Actually, Jaak had nothing to do with that,’ he replied. ‘The body was that of a woman who was an inmate at the Sanatorium, she died a few weeks ago and her body had been kept down in the mortuary for her family members came to claim her. Nobody did, so they let some medical students from the London Hospital dissect her cadaver for practice. When they were finished they left the body parts for the orderly to incinerate, but Putchin stole the woman’s torso and took it to the new building site for Scotland Yard, where he dumped it in the cellar, as you ordered.’

Evdokimoff smiled, shook his head and sipped his coffee.

‘Well if that doesn’t stir up the Police, then nothing will.’
