Mrs Elton in Amercia

Page 16

by Diana Birchall

Philip Augustus did not take a bride from the Highbury neighbourhood, but he did fulfil his early dreams of emigrating to America, where he served in the Bureau of Indian Affairs before rising to Senator of his chosen state, and finished as a distinguished Cabinet member under Abraham Lincoln. In his time, he knew Dickens, Twain, Carlyle and Alexander Graham Bell; and he frequently journeyed to London where he delivered speeches before Parliament on behalf of his adopted country. He was altogether so distinguished a man as to quite rejoice the heart of his proud mother and father, removed from the stream of great world events as they were in Highbury, and content to bask from afar in the accomplishments of Philip Augustus Elton. They lived to see him a famed Civil War orator in the Union cause; and themselves great-grandparents with descendants on both sides of the ocean. But Mrs. Knightley was never tired of remarking, in her outspoken old age, that America had done the Eltons' manners no good at all.

But not without some painful trials.

At Pemberley Elizabeth is somewhat oppressed by the weight of centuries of tradition. Furthermore, she is scrutinised by senior members of Darcy's family. Those amiable family members, Georgiana and Colonel Fitzwilliam, are ready for marriage. (To each other?)

The greatest challenge is unforeseen. A shadow from Darcy's past looks to darken the future.

Emma Knightley, though now a grandmother, retains the most attractive characteristics of her youth - humour, vigour and kindness are evident in her dealings with the younger generation and combine with a trace of her former tendency to manage other people's lives. And a touch of management is certainly needed to assist the love affairs and destinies of her own grandchildren and the descendants of old acquaintances such as the Elliots, the Tilneys, the Martins and the unspeakable Eltons.
