Blue Plague The Fall

by Watson, Thomas A.

Both Nancy and Debbie were looking at the duo, not liking the fact the girls had been used like gladiators. Then Bruce told the wives why they treated the gimp the way they did. For over an hour, he told them of the times gimp put the group in danger and how he treated both Susan and Cassandra, from the gimp’s own admission. How he demanded to be put in charge and use the women like he wanted.

As Bruce finished, both mamas were pissed off. First, that he was in their house, and second, not being told about gimp before now. Debbie and Nancy turned to look at each other. Then Debbie yelled, “Gimp, come here now.”

Gimp came into the game area holding his side and his groin. Debbie pointed to the area beside Bruce’s chair. Gimp glanced at Bruce then at the spot where Debbie was pointing, moving to it and not liking being that close to Bruce.

“Get down on your knees. You will not stand while Nancy and I talk to you. From this moment on, when any female talks to you, on your knees is where you will be. Never again will you look down on any female; you will always look up. Do I make myself clear? If I ever see you disrespect any woman, I will get a cheese grater and run it over your body until nothing is left,” Debbie said with her face set in stone.

  “Yes,” Gimp replied, looking down.

“Let’s get something clear right from the start. Look at me when I talk to you,” Debbie told him, and he snapped his head up.

“You are now looking at the head of the household when you look at us two women sitting right here. When you address us, it will be with respect, and ma’am better be the first and last words out of your mouth. Would you like for us to demonstrate what we know on your body? I promise it’s a lot worse than what two girls can do,” Debbie informed him.

“Ma’am, no, ma’am,” gimp replied, fear gripping his soul.

Then Nancy spoke with the same stone face as the gimp turned to look at her. “If either of us tell our husbands right now to cut you open and eat your liver, making you watch, it will be done. But just to show you who is in charge, watch this,” Nancy told him. Turning to the pool table, Nancy spoke, “Danny and Mary, you will not touch him again unless he threatens you or someone else or if he does not do as we tell him. Is that clear, girls?”

“Oh, mom,” both girls cried together.

“I mean it, girls,” Nancy turned her head, looking at them.

Seeing the look on her face, both girls quickly replied, “Yes, ma’am.”

Turning back to the gimp, Nancy continued, “I can see by the look on your face you think we have given you a reprieve. Far from it. If you do not complete what we set out for you every day then punishment will be in order. The punishment may come from us, our girls, our boys, or our husbands; you will never know which. We will give you a chance to join the human race again or we will kill you ourselves. Do I make myself clear?”

“Ma’am, yes, ma’am,” gimp replied, staring at the women with mortal fear. Gimp was more terrified of these two women than any of the others. The power they held was absolute; he had seen it before and even willed it a few times. The power was now held over his head.

Debbie spoke next, “Our boys will show you your chore tomorrow. It is known as shit detail on this farm. Every morning you will start and complete it then come and find one of us for your next task. You will not approach or talk to Susan for any reason ever again. She and the kids are no longer yours. They belong to this family now.”

All six of the kids snapped their heads up at the mention of no shit detail. Shit detail had different names on every farm. Someone took a wheelbarrow with a shovel and pitchfork and picked up dog and goat feces from the main yard. Then you took the wheelbarrow to the fields and picked up cow and horse feces then to the back of the property to dump it in a pile to be used as fertilizer on the hayfield. Then you took the wheelbarrow to the chicken coop, rabbit pens, quail and pheasant pens, and cleaned them out, taking the crap to a pile for the gardens and greenhouses. It was done every other day, and it took half a day to accomplish if you were lucky. Everyone tried to get out of it, even the adults. That was why it was referred to as shit detail––because you moved it, piled it, smelled like it, and that’s what you felt like after playing in it. All six kids looked at each other, grinning. Having the gimp might work out after all.

“Don’t think either of us doesn’t know your kind. If for any reason we feel you are trying to slack off or get by, we will unleash the family on you to torture then kill you. We are giving you a job we do on this farm ourselves, but we don’t like it. You have a purpose, and if you have a purpose, others will allow you to function. Any breach of the rules will be dealt with rapidly and severely. When I say rapidly, I mean you will not be given a second chance, and by severely, I mean power tools will be involved. Then Nancy and I will beat you to death with our bare hands and bury your body in one of those piles of shit,” Debbie told him with an icy gaze.

“Ma’am, I will do what both of you have said, ma’am,” gimp said, knowing he had to make himself useful, or he would die a painful death. The group would never have major trouble from the gimp again, as the last of his selfish pride left his body. He would eventually in time be seen as a necessary part of the group, doing jobs that no one wanted to do.

“Now, gimp, go lay in front of the door like a dog and go to sleep. I don’t want to look at you anymore,” Nancy said to him then turned her head and, looking around the room, told everyone to get something to eat.

Everyone jumped up, forming a line to get some food. Nancy and Debbie went to help Lynn in the kitchen. The kids walked by talking about no shit detail and high-fiving each other. Mary told Danny that she was glad they had not cut him. Mike told Bruce he was getting some food and left Bruce sitting in his chair alone in the game room ready to doze off, feeling safe with Pam in mission control.

Feeling eyes on him, Bruce turned around and saw Buffy still standing at the end of the bar looking at him. Seeing her eyes, Bruce held out his arms, and she ran into them as he pulled her onto his lap. Bruce told her, “It’s okay, baby. We are as safe as we can hope to be now. I know your mother loved you very much. You can cry now, baby,” Buffy started crying, squeezing Bruce tight, letting the hurt out as tears streamed down Bruce’s face. With each memory going through her head, she squeezed Bruce tighter. Bruce’s body shook as he cried with Buffy, her pain breaking his heart.

Danny was in the kitchen eating. Realizing Buffy was not around, she started looking for Buffy to make sure she got something to eat. Danny ran upstairs to her room then back to the game room and found her in Daddy’s lap crying and squeezing him tight. Danny walked to the other side of the chair then climbed into Bruce’s lap. Buffy and Bruce wrapped an arm around her, and they hugged each other. Tears rolled down Danny’s face as she joined her little sister in the sorrow.

Debbie got someone to take her place in the food line, noticing Bruce had not come in and figuring he had gone to sleep in his chair. Debbie went to the game room to wake him up. Seeing the three in the chair, she stopped and caught her breath. She went to the front of Bruce’s chair, kneeling in front of it, wrapping her arms around them, and joining the group in crying in sorrow.

So it went as each member of the family came in looking for another and joined the circle until all ten plus Tonya were together. They all cried with the little girl, not only for the loss of her mother but also for family and friends that were now gone. The family was what they had. The rest of the group left them alone with their grief, feeling a little out of place but thankful the family had accepted them in.

Maria went to mission control to ask Pam if she knew where any more tea was. Maria told Pam she did not want to disturb them. Pam said she knew where it was and went downstairs to show Maria where to get some more. If she had stayed and watched the monitors, she would have seen a pickup truck pull onto the road, driving slowly down it. The computer detected movement but labeled it environmental. The truck was much bigger than a human body and not recognized as a threat. It
stopped in front of the house, and someone in the truck pointed out a window at the driveway. The truck then turned around and sped off. With no one assigned to the fort because of Mike’s and Bruce’s return, all went unseen. Pam came back and sat down, looking at the monitors and not seeing anything.

The truck was a curse and a blessing. Someone now knew where the farm was, but it also led away the mob of several thousand that the convoy had stirred up, leading them away from the farm.
