But I couldn't do that when she went home at eleven because she had to be up with her kids the next morning to take them to peewee hockey practice. The party was just starting!
"Besides," I'd pleaded while he fumed silently at me, which meant that I was definitely in for it and I probably should have kept my fat mouth shut. "Vivian didn't drink much, especially not in comparison."
Yep. Definitely should have kept my big trap shut.
What was it about him that had me confessing almost compulsively to him? I had always been pretty good at keeping secrets before we got into a relationship.
Oh, yeah. It wasn't Decker, bless his heart. It was the booze that got me to rat myself out, every time. If I valued the health and safety of my behind—which was definitely in jeopardy as he kept searing that thick, wide leather belt of his across the fullest part of my behind—then I was going to need to become a teetotaler.
Yeah. Like that was going to happen.
I was balanced precariously on very wide spread legs, bent over the end of the bed with my arms folded behind me, under orders not to move.
But how could I possibly not move when I could see his hand descending with that terrible implement in his hand, just before it tattooed its crimson stripe across my ass, before being raised for yet another dose that could just as well land on the exact same spot?
Deliberately, even!
"Deck, please, stop!" I wailed, long since having been reduced to sobbing.
"I don't mind you going out with the girls. You know I don't. You know I'm not like that, and I never will be. For this to work for me, you have to be happy."
I could hear him panting—that was the amount of effort he was applying to each stroke!
"But I will not have you put yourself in jeopardy like that. You've got a cell phone, woman, use it—I've told you before and you know that I wouldn't give you any hassle if you called me to come get you, no matter what time of night it was."
Yes, I knew that. But when I had a snootful of wine, tequila, and butterscotch schnapps, I didn't always make the best decisions.
And besides, everyone else was letting her drive them home.
That kind of defense had never worked on my parents, and it certainly didn't work on Decker, who took a much harder line with me than my parents would ever have considered.
And I loved him for it. Except when it was happening. Then I would do pretty much anything to get him to stop.
I heard the belt fall to the floor and heaved a sigh of relief, then found myself cradled in his arms, his forehead pressed to mine, my face damp, and I wasn't sure it was just me who was doing the crying.
"Promise me you won't do that again, Gemma. Promise me, or I'm going to have to say that you can't go out with your friends if you're going to drink, and I don't want to have to say that."
He'd never threatened that before—only I knew he wasn't threatening.
"I'm sorry, Deck. I won't do it again. If I do, I'll understand if you make that rule, because I know I couldn't stand it if something happened to you that was totally preventable like that."
His head came up and I could see that his eyes were wet.
"Yes—I cannot lose you, Gem. I cannot, and I will not, if I have to tie you to the bed, then so be it."
This time, I hugged him, when it was much more usually the other way around, especially when I'd just been disciplined. But he looked like he needed it more than I did at that moment.
I held him this time and rocked him, then, when he seemed to recover a bit, I whispered into his ear, "You can tie me to the bed any time you like, you know."
That got a watery chuckle out of him. "I know. And I enjoy it immensely when I do."
I ran my hand through his hair. "I am sorry to have worried you, you know. Strapping notwithstanding."
"I know. I'm glad to know you understand why I do what I do to you."
I couldn't move him bodily to our pillows, although I did try, just to make him laugh at me huffing and puffing and trying to move him.
So he did it himself for the both of us, and we ended up in each other's arms under the covers.
"I love you, Decker," I whispered to him, holding his face in my hands.
"I love you, too, Gemma. Even though sometimes you drive me to drink." He kissed the end of my nose.
"Well, maybe if you drove me, I wouldn't keep getting into trouble. "
That got a laugh out of him.
For a long while, the bedroom was silent, although neither of us was asleep. Then we heard a tiny whine. And then a louder one.
"Someone does not like being stuck in her crate while Mommy and Daddy are in the big bed, where she is quite sure she belongs," I said, hauling myself out of bed to the small pink crate and opening the door.
Since Guinevere—the French Bulldog pup he'd bought me a few months ago, who was the most adorable silver gray or "blue" color—was still just a pup, I immediately took her outside—which was conveniently located just through the sliders off the master bedroom. She did what she needed to do and bumbled her way back in, going to the side of the bed and whining to be picked up, which I did when I came back to bed.
She ran to Daddy, who was much more her favorite person than I was—not that I could blame her—and snuggled up against him, very much like I did a few seconds later, and we all fell asleep together, with puppy's little nose tucked into the crook of her Daddy's arm.
