“If we’re going to keep this place from being compromised, you can’t go in Aimee.” I knew Andy was right, but I didn’t like where he was going with it. I remembered my dream and knew it was going to come true sooner than I anticipated.
“Are you suggesting we split up? We can’t do that! What happened to never leaving me alone?” I panicked.
“It won’t be for long Aims,” Brian said. “I have bags filled with weapons right by the door. All you have to do is open the door, grab the bags and go.”
“Any amount of time I’m alone could be just enough time for Evan to get to me. I don’t know if I’ll be able to fight him off long enough.” I was in complete horror. I knew what was going to happen in the end and I was hoping to keep it from happening. It seemed like I didn’t have any other choice.
As we got closer to Brian’s house, Andy said, “start walking down the street slowly, I’ll catch up to you.”
I was hesitant to leave his side, but I knew it had to be done. I gave him a hug and kiss and whispered, “Please hurry.”
“Everything will be fine.” Andy gave me a kiss on the forehead then walked towards the house as I slowly made my way down the street.
I felt paranoid as I walked alone. I looked in every direction as I went along to make sure I wasn’t being followed. It didn’t make me feel any better because I wasn’t sure of who or what to look out for. I wasn’t walking for long when my vision was filled with nothing but bright white dots and bright blue lines dancing all around me. I could hardly see anything in front of me, it gave me a headache and I had to stop walking. I tried closing my eyes but it didn’t help.
“Something’s wrong,” I said while holding my head from the pain. It got so bad that I had to sit down on the sidewalk. I leaned against a building as I tried to shake the headache.
“Aimee, what is it?” Andy asked.
“I can hardly see anything and it’s giving me a massive headache,” I weakly managed to say.
“Someone go help her!” Andy yelled to everyone through the earwig.
I didn’t wait long before I felt someone grab my arm and help me stand up. I still couldn’t see much past the bright dots and lines and wasn’t sure who was helping me. “Thanks for the help,” I said. There was no response as we started down the street and I got a bad feeling. “Who are you anyway?” There was still no answer and I still couldn’t see. The grip on my arm got tighter and I was being led down the street even faster. I wondered what was going on when the white dots dispersed. I looked to the person next to me and realized it was Evan. “What did you do to me?” I whispered in a panic.
“I had to slow you down somehow,” Evan said. He seemed pleased with himself knowing his plan worked. “Now listen carefully while I tell you what’s going to happen because I’m only going to say it once.”
“I’m not going to do anything for you and there’s no way you can make me,” I snapped.
“No, I don’t have the ability of control like you do, but I can give you the incentive to do whatever I want.” He was so full of himself.
“Aimee, create a shield against Evan,” Andy softly said through the earwig.
I couldn’t believe I had forgotten about that. I focused on creating a shield to protect myself from anyone who wanted to do me any harm. I hoped once the shield was fully formed, Evan would go flying away from me. The shield formed but Evan remained unaffected. I didn’t understand how it was possible.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” Evan said, reading my mind. “I just want your help.” He still had a firm grip on me and I thought about what I could do next to get away.
I subtly created a ball of electricity in my hand and threw it at Evan’s leg. He let go of my arm as he convulsed and dropped to the ground. To anyone else, it simply looked as if he had been shocked with a stun gun. I ran away as fast as I could and turned down the first street I came to and stopped for a moment in an alley to catch my breath.
“I got away from Evan, but I’m pretty sure there are others trying to find me. What should I do?”
“Tell me where you are, I’ll come get you,” Andy said.
“I don’t know. I’m in some alleyway.” I was scared out of my mind and on the verge of bursting into tears. I saw something out of the corner of my eye and knew I was going to have to fight.
“You killed my mate,” scowled an unfamiliar female voice.
I turned around to see a vampire standing in front of me. I remembered the mass of vampires Andy and I killed a while back in Colorado. She was furious. I prepared myself for the fight that was about to start.
“Took you long enough to come for revenge, don’t you think?” I was scared, but I knew I needed to put on a brave face. I knew I needed to find a way to let Andy and everyone else know what was going on without letting the vampire know I was in contact with other people. “Vampires don’t usually take this long to exact their revenge, do they?”
“She doesn’t have any weapons!” I heard Andy yell through the earwig. He was freaking out more than I’d ever experienced. He was always so loving and serious when he needed to be, but a panic was new territory. “She has no idea how to kill a vamp besides to cut off its head!”
“It took me a while to get close to you undetected. You have a lot of protection surrounding you,” said the vengeful vampire.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I lied. I knew there were two groups, but I didn’t consider that to be a lot. Anyone could easily slip pass those groups, especially since they were only on the lookout for Evan.
“You have at least ten groups of people watching you at all times! Don’t insult me by acting like you didn’t know.” My eyes widened and my jaw dropped. I had no idea about the other people watching me. They must have been working for Lucifer because I knew if Andy was going to recruit more people he would have introduced me to them. “You really didn’t know anything about it, did you?”
“Not a clue.”
“Well, that doesn’t change anything. I’m still going to kill you.”
I started to panic. I didn’t have anything to cut off her head with and I didn’t know of any other way to kill her.
“Try to snap the vampire’s neck. That won’t kill it, but it’ll stop her for a while so you can get away and meet up with me,” Andy said. I could tell he regained some of his composure, but was able to detect a hint of panic in his voice.
The vampire lunged towards me and bounced off the shield I created earlier. I was glad it worked. She flew against the wall, creating a huge dent. I made a ball of electricity in my hand and threw it at her, but it didn’t do anything. I wasn’t sure how I would get close enough to the vampire to be able to snap her neck and run away.
“Control the vampire, Aimee.” I heard multiple voices in my ear. I kept forgetting I was able to control things, but that’s what happens when you’re constantly questioning your sanity.
I made the vampire stand frozen in her spot while I went up to her and snapped her neck. I looked down at her limp body for a moment and remembered it wouldn’t last long so I ran out of the alley and down the street as fast as I could. I turned down the next street I came across and it wasn’t long before I found myself on Michigan Avenue. My nightmare was coming true.
“Andy I’m on Michigan Avenue!” I yelled. I knew he would realize the significance of the statement.
“We need to get to her fast!” Andy shouted. The panic was back and worse than before. “Aimee, whatever you do don’t get on the train!”
“I’ll try not to.” I was starting to slow down when I noticed the vampire running after me. “Guys, hurry! The vampire is up and after me again.” I bolted down the street in attempt to get away, but she was too fast for me. I was lucky I had the shield up because she bounced off of it a second time. I kept running as fast as I could, but knew I didn’t have to as long as I kept the shield up and as strong as possible. I wasn’t sure if there was anything or anyone else after me, but I didn
’t want to take my chances. “Where are you? I have a feeling something bad is going to happen.”
“We’re on our way Aims,” Brian said.
“I have the weapons and I’ll be there as soon as possible. Whatever you do, please don’t go on the train.” I could feel Andy’s fear from where he was which made me feel worse.
“It’s Evan,” I gasped as he walked towards me. “What should I do?”
“Try to avoid him,” Andy said.
I ran into oncoming traffic to get away from Evan who was too close for comfort. I almost got hit by a few cars, but was lucky enough to make it across without a scratch. Once I was across the street, I immersed myself in a crowd of people hoping Evan would lose track of me. I didn’t realize the people I surrounded myself with were working with Evan. Once they realized who I was, they grabbed me. I saw Evan making his way across the street and panicked as I struggled to break free. I decided to see if I could make an electric current run through my body to shock the people who were holding me. To my surprise, it worked. I broke free and ran away.
“I think I’m going to have to catch a train Andy. There are too many people on the street trying to capture me,” I hesitantly said.
“No! Don’t! You know what’s going to happen,” Andy yelled.
“Where are you?” I asked.
“I just turned on Michigan Avenue. Which part of the street are you on?”
“I’m near the Coach store. Andy, hurry!”
“Keep going towards the Art Institute and I’ll catch up to you.”
“What happens if I get there?”
“Keep going in that direction until I catch up to you.”
“Alright,” I sighed. “I hope I see you soon.”
“You will,” Andy said. I was glad one of us was confident.
I slowed from my sprint to a jog and then to a walk. I looked around to see if anyone was following me and stopped looking when I realized there was no way for me to tell who was after me and who was an innocent bystander. I walked faster in case someone or something was following me. I saw a white ball of light flash right in front of me and stopped dead in my tracks. Just as fast as it came, it was gone. I stood for a moment, staring in awe at what happened. I looked all around me, checking if the white orb could be seen anywhere else but it was nowhere to be found.
I had a feeling something bad was going to happen so I quickened my pace. I was looking behind me when I noticed a transparent woman standing in the distance, staring at me. We made eye contact which sent chills down my spine. She suddenly disappeared when I turned around and sped down the street. I didn’t know what to do besides run, but I knew it wouldn’t be very helpful. I couldn’t make a fire to burn the ghost with the mass of people on the street. I knew eventually the ghost would catch up to me and do something but I didn’t know what, I just knew it wasn’t going to be good.
Moments later, the same spirit appeared a few feet in front of me. Instinctively, I created a fireball in my hand. I heard a woman gasp the moment it appeared and immediately let the fire disappear. I turned to see the woman frozen where she stood with eyes wide open in horror. I was scared too, but I had to keep going. I ran in the direction of the apparition and she disappeared as I passed her. I hoped I could get away.
“Andy, a ghost is following me. Where are you?”
“I can see you now. Keep running, I’ll catch up.”
I was relieved to know Andy could see me. If anything were to happen to me, he would see who or what was behind it. I wanted to stop running and let Andy catch up but I knew if I did, I was going to get caught. I thought about running towards him, but I didn’t know if there was anyone or anything else after me and I didn’t want to make their job easier.
Suddenly I found myself surrounded by ghosts in every direction but one. I knew they were trying to lead me towards the trains. I tried to keep going past the spirits, but the one directly in front of me grabbed my wrist as I tried to pass it. I was being pulled in the direction of the trains. I tried so hard to stay away from there since I knew what was going to happen. It seemed like it was destiny for me to end up on that train.
“Aimee, why are you crossing the street!? Please don’t tell me you’re going towards the train,” Andy said nervously.
“Spirits are forcing me in that direction.” I tried to say it as quietly as I could, but judging the looks on the faces of people around me, I knew I wasn’t quiet enough. I was going to have to communicate with Andy telepathically. “How do I get rid of these spirits without causing a scene?”
“I don’t know. Make your move the second you’re sure you won’t cause a scene.” Even telepathically I could tell he was freaking out.
I soon found a brief opening to create a fireball and get the ghosts away from me. I took the opportunity and ran away as fast as I could.
“Did you get away?”
“Yeah, I have to keep running. Who knows what else is out there trying to get to me.” I realized I was still headed towards the train. I wasn’t sure what to do. If I got on, I was going to get caught for sure, but I wasn’t sure how much longer I was going to be able to keep running.
“Don’t even think about it,” Andy said, reading my mind. “If you’re that tired, keep going towards the train but don’t go on until I’m close enough to keep an eye on you.”
“How far behind me are you?”
“I can see you but I’m not close enough to be able to get on the same train as you.”
“Should I slow down?”
“No I’ll speed up.”
I turned around to determine how close Andy was. He smiled back at me when we made eye contact. It was comforting to know I had protection. I finally made it to the train station and ran up the steps to barely made the train. I sat down and caught my breath for a moment when I heard a panicked voice in my head.
“Aimee, I’m not on that train! Why didn’t you wait for me!?”
“I’m so sorry, it’s a habit,” I replied.
“Get off at the next stop and wait for me there.” I knew he was really upset with me and I wasn’t sure how I could make it right.
I looked around and saw Gina, just like in my nightmare. “Andy, Gina is on this train.” I tried to keep a low profile. I thought about moving to the next train car, but didn’t want to risk getting caught sooner than expected.
“Aimee, I’m at the next stop. Where are you?” Andy was furious. It was that moment I realized I had spaced out enough to cause me to miss the stop where I was supposed to get off.
“I’m sorry. I spaced out and missed the stop. I’ll get off at Clark and Lake.” We both knew how bad that was going to be, but there was no other choice. The train came to a stop and I got off, trying to be as calm and unnoticeable as possible. I kept my head down as I saw Gina out of the corner of my eye. Once she passed me, I decided to go in the opposite direction to make sure she wouldn’t notice. I had barely started in the other direction when I felt someone grab my arm.
Chapter 15
It was playing out exactly like I had seen in my nightmare. I turned around to find that it was Gina who had a death grip on my arm.
“Gina,” I gasped.
“It’s great to see you again Aimee.”
“Can’t say the same considering the circumstance, do you mind letting go of my arm? You’re hurting me.” I was trying to stay calm. If I caused a scene with so many innocent people around, who knew how many of them would get caught in the crossfire.
“Sorry about that, but I’m not going to let go of you. I don’t want you to run away.” I could tell she was straining to be pleasant. She lessened her grip on me ever so slightly.
“Try to control her,” I heard Brian’s voice in my ear. It was nice to hear a calm voice amid all the chaos.
I focused on getting Gina to let go of me, but it didn’t work.
“You really think that mind control thing is going to work on me?” Gina laughed. “Evan taught me how to protect myself fro
m it. No more games, let’s go.”
I remembered I was able to make an electric current run through my body earlier and decided to try it to get away from Gina. Once I had the current running through my body, I decided to try making it go into Gina’s. She let go of me and dropped to the ground. I was glad it worked because it was my last hope to get away.
I started to run away when I saw a train pull into the station. I noticed in one of the windows that Andy was on the train. I ran towards the door he was going to come out of but just before I got there, I saw another familiar face, Evan. I only had two options: run away from Evan and lose Andy or wait for Andy and risk Evan catching up to me.
“Evan’s coming. I have to go or he’ll get to me.” I was so torn about my decision. I just wanted to stop running and be with Andy again.
“Go, I’ll be right behind you.” I was lucky because just as I started running, the train doors opened. It wasn’t long before I felt a hand grab hold of mine and I turned to see Andy’s smiling face.
“It’s so good to have you next to me again.” I wanted to stop and have a moment with him but I knew it wasn’t a good idea. He handed me one of the backpacks filled with weapons and I couldn’t have felt more relieved. We ran down the platform towards the stairs. There were too many people going down the escalator and we couldn’t pass them. We nervously stood on the escalator hoping to go unnoticed. I held on tight to Andy, not wanting to let go of him as long as I didn’t have to. The events of the day had taken its toll.
“We need to get out of here fast and find a place to lay low for a while,” Andy whispered.
“Where?” I asked. “All of our usual spots aren’t safe anymore.”
“We’re working on it.”
“What are we going to do until we find a place!? I can’t keep running around Andy, I’m tired. I just want to relax.” I was annoyed. I knew I shouldn’t have been, none of this was his fault but I just wanted it all to be over. I hardly had the time to question whether or not all of this was really happening. I hoped I would wake up soon and discover it was all just a weird dream. I was so tired of everything that part of me hoped none of it was real.
