They all crowded round behind her. Dan held his breath.

Annie unfolded the paper. “Here we are,” she muttered.

“What does it say?” Si asked. “I can’t see it from here.”

Dan scanned the words hungrily over Annie’s shoulder, heart slamming against his chest.

Annie cleared her throat. “I’m in. Your binocs behind hedge across road. Caution needed: binocs here but no formal watches. Will destroy when able. Nine men. Shotguns. Q unknown.” She stopped. “Quantity, I think,” she said to herself. “No immediate danger. General mood hunt and gather. Will use same tree until compromised.”

  Dan breathed out. “Wow. Right.”

  “What were you expecting?”

“I don’t know. Something more alarming. From the sounds of this we have nothing to worry about. Though I was sure I counted ten.”

Annie shrugged. “Maybe two of them look alike.”

  “Maybe.”

“Well then let’s celebrate. If he can destroy their binoculars that gives us a lot more freedom.”

“He didn’t mention anything about the sheep or the fishing rods, though.”

Annie shook her head. “He wouldn’t. He’s too clever to start interrogating them. Remember he’s supposed to have come straight up from home. Not from here.”

“I can’t believe that worked,” Clive said. “If I’m honest, that’s the thing that worried me most. That these men would believe he just found the house.”

“Well he did,” Pete said with a shrug.

“He did,” Dan echoed, feeling a load lift off his shoulders for the first time since the power went out.
