He’d been incredible. Kai couldn’t have asked for a better partner in all this.

“I got a call from our agent on the way home,” he said as Kai opened the bag of doughnuts.

Kai shoved a doughnut in his mouth, offering the bag to Wyatt, who took one for once.

“Anything interesting?” Kai asked around a mouthful of fluffy, delicious pastry.

“Yeah, they’re thinking about a Made With Love special,” Wyatt said, looking down at his own doughnut rather than eating it.

“What kind of special?” Kai asked, licking glaze off his fingers and shoving the remainder of the doughnut in his mouth in one go.

Wyatt cleared his throat. “Uh, well… a wedding special.”

  Kai’s eyes widened.

“That is, umm…” Wyatt looked down at the doughnut in his hand again. “If you’d consider… marrying… me?”

Kai swallowed the rest of his doughnut as Wyatt looked for him, waiting for an answer.

Wyatt offered him the doughnut he was still holding. “It’s kind of a ring?” he said, shrugging.

Kai couldn’t remember ever feeling more in love with him.

He set his laptop on the coffee table, closing the lid, and then leaned in and sealed his lips over Wyatt’s. Partly because he wanted to, partly because he needed a moment if he was going to do anything other than burst into tears and answer in gibberish.

Of course he wanted to marry Wyatt. He’d spent the past six months wondering if it was too soon, and not wanting to put all that extra pressure on Wyatt while he was building something, and…

And then Wyatt had beaten him to it. Of course he had. Wyatt always knew what he wanted, often before Kai had figured it out.

He plucked the doughnut from Wyatt’s hand, passing him the bag with the remaining two in it instead.

“I think I can accept this ring,” Kai said, grabbing a tissue from the box on the coffee table and setting it down. “I’d love to marry you.”

“So I should say yes on the special? Call Louise back?” Wyatt asked, setting the bag aside.

Kai grinned, climbing into Wyatt’s lap and kissing him again, letting soft, happy sounds rumble in his chest. He felt like he was going to burst with joy, and by now he really should have been used to that feeling, but every time Wyatt did something sweet for him, he felt it all over again.

So at least once a day, and usually more.

He still hadn’t gotten tired of it, and he was never expecting to.

“After,” Kai said, pressing another soft kiss to Wyatt’s lips and grinding his hips, just so there couldn’t be any mistake about what after meant.

“Aren’t you on a deadline?” Wyatt asked, a teasing smile playing around his lips.

Kai kissed him again, because he could. The thought that Wyatt was offering to be all his, forever, was almost too much. Almost.

“I am,” Kai agreed, brushing his nose against Wyatt’s. “But I have a brand new fiancé. They’ll understand if I’m a little late.”

Wyatt grinned up at him, his eyes sparkling. “You sure? I wouldn’t wanna ruin your flawless reputation.”

“Well, I’m about to marry into yours,” Kai said. “So…”

Wyatt chuckled. “Got it. Ruining both our reputations.”

Kai shrugged. “Considering you’re about to be late to work for a week? Yeah. Might as well start early.”

Wyatt laughed as Kai kissed him again, and the sound wrapped itself firmly around Kai’s heart, and he couldn’t ever remember being happier.

This might not have been what either of them were expecting when they’d walked into the same office three years ago, but it was definitely what they deserved.

  Red Hot - Chapter One

Through the haze of smoke and heat that had suddenly taken over his apartment, trapping Andy inside, he’d been sure he was going to die. That this was his last day on Earth, and all he’d have to show for his time here was…

Well, nothing. If the building burned down, which seemed an increasingly likely scenario, then Andy’s whole life would amount to a pile of ash. Only a small handful of people would even realize he was gone.

When someone picked him up and flung him over their shoulder, he could hardly believe his luck. He was being rescued. He didn’t know how or why or if he even deserved it, but it was too much of a relief, once he was out in the fresh air again, for him to care much about it.

The stranger—a firefighter, obviously—set him down outside. Andy’s head spun as his feet touched the ground, but he forced himself to stay upright.

The other man paused, holding both of Andy’s shoulders and looking him in the eye through his mask. He had pretty eyes, soft and kind.

“Are you okay?” the firefighter asked, the words muffled through his safety gear. Andy coughed, his lungs still burning and his eyes watering, but nodded.

He wasn’t even slightly okay, but he was alive. Alive was good enough.

He watched the firefighter go as someone put a blanket around his shoulders. The rush of blood in his ears made it difficult to understand what they were saying, but he followed when he was led away.

As he sat in the back of an ambulance, he looked up at his apartment building burning down.

Just when he’d started to feel as though everything in his life was going as planned, he was suddenly homeless.

Or, at least, he was homeless until his insurance payout came through. The thought made his stomach turn, and he started coughing again, this time unable to stop. His throat burned, his chest hurt, his head spun.

Tears pricked at his eyes, shock finally setting in. He pulled the blanket close around his shoulders, shivering even under the bright sun overhead.

He was alive. That was enough. Alive was all that mattered. Everything else could be rebuilt.

He looked over and saw the same firefighter coming out of the building again, a cat tucked under his arm.

Firefighters, he realized, were actually perfect.

That was his last thought before he passed out.
