Patchwork Peril (An Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mini-Mystery)

“Probably,” said Zack. “Keeping you confused made it easy for her to convince others of your unreliable memory.”

“But more than that, she had an uncanny knack for improvisation,” I said. “She never showed any signs of hesitation or fear until she saw us with her computer.”

“I’m not surprised,” said Harley. “Vasquez said both women had gone to acting school. They started running cons after they failed to break into the movies.”

“Maybe they gave up too soon,” I said. “Virginia certainly gave an Oscar-worthy performance.”

“Anyway,” said Fogarty, “those two are going away for a long time.” He turned to Rosalie. “You don’t have to worry about them.”

“What about the money they stole from me?” she asked.

He grinned. “Saved the best part for last. We recovered all of it. You’ll get it back shortly. As well as all the merchandise they bought with your credit cards.”

“And what am I supposed to do with all that high-priced designer crap?”

  “Return it,” said Fogarty.

Rosalie frowned at the casts on her arm and leg. Her eyes welled up with tears, and her voice took on a whine. “How am I supposed to do that? Most stores now have limited return policies. By the time these casts come off, it could be too late.”

  I looked at Zack.

His mouth quirked as he shrugged and nodded in resignation.

“Don’t worry,” I told Rosalie. “Zack and I will return everything for you.”

Her face brightened, her eyes cleared, and she smiled. With not a trace of whine left in her voice, she said, “Thank you, Anastasia. I knew I could count on you.”

And I knew I’d just been conned.
