“You can bet! If you have changed, then anyone else can, including me!” said Mellis, pulling Chad’s legs. “You see, for some time now, I’ve been able to stay away from women,” said Mellis seriously.

  “Is Kelly something else?”

“At least, Kelly is an old one, if not present. Urr…though her possessive and contentious attitude was able to tone down my numerous affairs, I had two behind her back!” Mellis confessed and Chad tittered. “But when I met Haida, I didn’t even have the urge for the arms of another woman anymore. Yes, I didn’t sleep with her, but seeing her everyday and being with her was more satisfying than being with a thousand women. It was like she was everything, all I’d ever need. I knew I liked her when I saw her, but never had I imagined falling so much in love with her this way…she’s something else…” he gazed in rapture, with his eyes sparkling.

“You see, she’s your expensive machine!” said Chad. “Do what you have to do, so not to let go of her!”

Later in the evening, Mellis called the vicar and told him he couldn’t honor his call that weekend, but promised to do so the following weekend. That night, he thought about Haida and reminisced about the past. He realized how much he missed her. He’d let Kelly leave the country before he took any steps towards a reconciliation with Haida.

The next afternoon, when Kelly passed Mellis’ workplace, she was happy to see Chad. He made shameless advances at her and as usual, she was surly towards him. But during the evening when she came back home, she was infatuated with the thought of him. She struggled to get him out of her mind and her night was sore.

It was a bright Friday morning. The first thing that Kelly thought of when she got out of bed was Chad. Why did she miss him so? She wished to see him. Perfect! Mellis said he’d be away from the office the whole day, and Chad would be around to take charge. It was obvious the young man was interested in her. She’d have to put up few splenetic acts to get him to respond to her every whim. Yes, she wasn’t going to fall easily into his arms. Apparently, the de jure assistant was occupying the king’s seat when Kelly entered the office without knocking. Chad lifted his head in response to the slam on the door, and then looked again. There stood Kelly, seductively dressed with an amorous stare.

He threw the pen on the desk and leaned back in his seat, “Mellis isn’t here and would not be coming back for the rest of the day,” he said.

“I see,” said Kelly, modeling her way to the desk. “At no expense do I mind spending some time in my fiancé’s office before I leave!” she snapped and sat directly opposite to him.

He watched her quietly, “Is there anything much I have the ability to do for you this time to earn some pleasure for myself?” he asked politely.

“Well, maybe, but definitely not to my taste. With me, you can never earn a single pleasure!” she said peevishly and he chuckled.

“Really? I see,” he said with a grin, getting on his feet. “All my life, I’ve earned so many pleasures, even, those that seemed quite daring, too,” he made his way close to her. “You know why? Because there’s no mountain I cannot climb, nor river I cannot cross,” he said, and sat on the desk, too close by her. Kelly got scared as he touched her cheek with his palm. She didn’t expect him to move so fast on her. His touch nearly made her melt into his arms.

Flurried, she jumped up and walked a distance away, “You’re disgusting!” she spat out. “You’ve no idea the kind of mountain you are dealing with, now! If you think you can easily climb this one, then you are very mistaken!” she was angry.

“Oh, really?” asked Chad, grinning, moving towards her again. He seized her waist, and her stomach churned. He pulled her violently towards him.

“Do I need to get an extra ordinary rope to climb this mountain?” he asked, running his finger lazily on her face, and then down her chest. “Do I?” and then suddenly, he started blowing kisses all over her neck. Kelly melted, enjoying every bit of it. Then he got his lips closer to hers and she flinched.

“Yes, you do!” she yelped, horrified. She was scared she couldn’t resist his kisses. She wasn’t ready for a defeat yet.

“I wouldn’t have to,” he said, caressing the back of her neck. “You know why?” and then suddenly, he pulled her neck violently towards him. “Because I don’t go for grumpy ones like you!” he said sarcastically with a grin.

“Let go of me! You’re hurting me!” she shrieked through gritted teeth. She put up a struggle, but Chad was too strong for her. He increased the pressure of his hand at the back of her neck as if to punish her, and she felt the pain.

“You are hurting me!” she shouted.

Chad pushed her violently away and she nearly fell. Giggling broadly, he got her flurried. “Moron! Pig! Imbecile! Scumbag!” she hollered with contempt and then bolted out of the office. Chad collapsed into his seat, grinning with pure delight “Sly!” he scathed.

Behind the wheel, Kelly gritted her teeth countless times, feeling contempt and disappointment. “Damn you Chad! You haven’t heard the last of me!” she thought. It was the first time a man had been that rude towards her and she couldn’t take it. Come to think of it, she really felt something for Chad, and that made her incensed. She was glum when she reached home, and Laura noticed she wasn’t her best self.

Soon, the week ended and it was a Monday. Kelly had to see her mother again before she left the country. She journeyed to Kumasi and kept her promise of fixing a bigger poly tank. She returned to the capital the next day and spent the rest of the day with Mellis. Her flight was 8pm the next day, but there were few things she had to take care of before that. They wouldn’t see each other tomorrow and so Mellis gave her his best of treats, hoping that would be the last. He was going to see Haida during the weekend and talk her into coming back. Kelly reached the UK safely, and it was a pleasant report about Mellis to his mother. Mrs. Hansen and Kelly planned fixing the wedding date very soon, something they, especially Kelly, was very confident Mellis would be cooperative about.

  NINE

Presuming Mellis would come to the house on Sunday, which was the best day the vicar normally indulged in his tennis escapades, Haida intended spending the rest of the Sunday at Kiara’s after church, just to avoid seeing him. Apparently, she decided to spend the whole of the Saturday at home. She was on court with Jolly when Mellis came. Her heart missed a heavy beat when she saw him. The vicar was outside near the court, watching his daughters play.

“Hello Mellis” he said, beaming with smiles “How are you doing?”

“Quite well” said Mellis, looking at Haida, who immediately averted her gaze.

“Have a seat. Haida get Mellis something to drink, will you?” said the vicar

“Would you mind doing that for me, Jolly?” asked Mellis, walking towards Jolly “I’d like to have a game with Haida. It’s been quite long since I held the bat”

“No problem” said Jolly with a grin and handed him the racket.

“Now, let’s have a quick one” said Mellis, smiling into Haida’s eyes

‘What a jerk!’ thought Haida ‘How could he behave like there’s nothing wrong?’ She wished she could hit the bat on his face and walk away, but she couldn’t behave grumpily in any way towards him in the presence of the vicar. Apparently, she had no choice than to play along with his impudence.

Haida had the first set, and Mellis saw the great force with which she served; as if to hit the ball hard on his face. Mellis got it straight there and hit back harder. They played the first twenty seconds without each conceding a point. Then, he hit, and the ball flew over her head; she conceded a point. ‘What was she thinking?’ thought Mellis. Then as she served, she mopped her brow and hit towards the sideway, hoping the ball would elude Mellis. But one thing she forgot was that she was playing with a professional. Mellis got it well and hit back on time; again, she conceded a point.

‘Damn you Mellis!’ she thought ‘I’d get it even with you!’ Crouching wildly, she served and Mellis saw the emotion wi
th which she served. Then, suddenly, he was distracted by the look on her face – pure hatred – and he conceded a point. ‘That is just the beginning, moron!’ she thought. Haida played her best and conceded no other point. The vicar noticed the emotion she attached to the game. At the end, she emerged the victor with Mellis conceding three other points.

The vicar had five set game with Mellis – with Mellis winning three sets – before they set to lunch.

Once more, at table, Haida had to play along Mellis’ sheepish stares and glances. Mellis found himself enjoying the uneasiness he made her fall into. It was a long time since he saw those beautiful penetrating eyes, and that innocent lovely face. This was the face he fell in love with before, and as he stared into it, he realized he still loved it and the real woman that lived inside that thick body. Mellis hoped to be alone with her, and get the chance to talk intimately with her, but, interestingly, she joined the rest of the family beside the Tele and Mellis had no choice than to be part of the team. He saw how she was doing anything to avoid being alone with him. Then, as he asked for permission to leave, he praised the vicar in his heart when he suggested Haida saw him off.

When they were out of sight of the others, Mellis seized her hand “Haida we need to talk!”

“There’s nothing to talk about!” she snapped, pulling her hand away and taking the lead. Maybe it wasn’t the right time and place to talk seriously with her.

He’d go to her workplace and then try convincing her into having lunch with him, and then they would talk. When they reached his car, Mellis paused, leaned on the car and gazed at her with rapture. Haida looked away with fury on her face. But as she turned to depart, he caught her hand and moved closer to her. Keeping her cool, she looked away, her forehead crinkling in anger. Mellis turned her face gently towards him with his finger and saw the sadness in her eyes. Unable to catch his eyes, tears filled hers and she tried hard not to let them flow.

Mellis saw her uneasiness, and at this point, felt sorry “Haida” he whispered “I love you. I want you back…I’m sorry for….”

She pulled her hand from his and flung away. Tears freely rolled down her cheeks as she went. Mellis stared after her till she disappeared. He drove away soberly, without complain.

  ***

The next morning, Haida woke up feeling sick. She came back from church and retired to bed. She called Kiara and informed her of her inability to make it to her end. Worried for not coming down for lunch, Mrs. Morgan went to see her in her room and suggested she saw the doctor.

But Haida declined the idea, saying she’d be alright “I guess it is tiredness; I’ll have some rest and I’ll be fine”.

But when she did not come down for supper, Mrs. Morgan knew it was something more than tiredness. When she went to Haida’s room, she found her fast asleep. She felt her forehead which was a bit warm, and then Haida opened her eyes lazily.

“Phoebe I think you have fever. Why don’t you see the doctor right away before he closes?” asked Mrs. Morgan, worried.

“I’ll be ok mom; I’ve taken some drugs and I’m getting better” said Haida lazily.

Mrs. Morgan got her a bowl of hot soup and a half plate of rice, but Haida did not touch the rice; she felt queasy in the stomach.

Haida woke up the next morning and felt worse. She felt slight pain in her abdomen and her queasiness had intensified. She vomited yellowish substance several times, and it was quite clear she had fever. She tried getting prepared to go to work, but after bathing, she felt very weak. She called Kiara and asked her to seek permission from the CA on her behalf, for absence at work; she wanted to visit the hospital. Her mother checked her up and realized she was paler than the previous day. She told her mom how she was feeling and Mrs. Morgan asked if she was in her menstrual cycle.

“Some menstrual cycles come with them, some slight fever” explained Mrs. Morgan when she mentioned the abdominal pains she felt.

It was then that Haida realized her menses was overdue for seven days. Could she be pregnant? No, it was impossible! She was horrified not certain about her virginity status and therefore, pregnancy. If she said she wasn’t in her menses and that it was overdue, her mother might suspect she was pregnant.

“I’m due tomorrow or the next” she lied “I think that explains the pain in my abdomen”

“Whatever the cause, I think you must see Dr. Stevens for treatment before the fever escalates” said Mrs. Morgan.

The family doctor? What if she was really pregnant? There’s no way he’d keep that away from her father. No. she can’t see him now; she must be sure of her pregnancy status before that

“Err…I’ll see t he doctor later on in the day if I still feel bad. For now, I will take some drugs and a nap” she said

“Are you sure you’ll be fine?”

“Sure mom. It’s not that serious” said Haida.

Thank God the vicar wasn’t in the house. He’d have whisked her off to the hospital even if she didn’t want to. Immediately her mother was gone, she called Kiara “Kiara?” she said, with deep fright in her tone.

“Haida is something wrong? How are you feeling?”

“Scared! I’m scared Kiara” Haida said matter-of-factly.

“Scared of what? Haida, what is the problem?” asked Kiara, troubled

Haida sighed anxiously “I may be…pregnant”

“What!?” said Kiara sharply, finding it difficult to believe what Haida just said “What do you mean by that?”

“I…I…Kiara I….” Haida didn’t know where to begin as she paced the room aptly.

“Wait. I’m on my way to work and I’ll pass by before I get to the office…”

Kiara walked straight to Haida’s room when she got to her end. “Now, tell me what this pregnancy thing is all about” she said

“Kiara, I feel nauseous and has been vomiting yellowish substance; my head aches, I feel weak and my menses is past due for a whole week! These surely are signs of pregnancy!” said Haida very disturbed.

Kiara chuckled “Wait. Have you been sleeping with Mellis all these while?” she asked, quite lost.

“I…I really don’t know if he made love to me or….”

“Or what? Haida what are you trying to say?” asked Kiara, quite hysterical.

It was then that Haida narrated what happened at the beach party three weeks ago. “I don’t know if I lost my virginity that day or not” she concluded.

  “Oh God” said Kiara sharply.

Haida chuckled sardonically “The ridiculous part of it is that I don’t even know if both men slept with me” and she scoffed “How do I know who the father really is if I’m really pregnant? How do I get them to take up a paternal test…”

“Will you stop talking this way? We don’t even know if you are really pregnant or not, and you are worrying about who got you pregnant? Please!” Kiara said quite impulsively “What we must do now is to find out first if you are really pregnant or not…” she lowered her voice

“But how?” asked Haida indifferently and plopped on her large bed. Kiara lied by her on her back instead. They both fell into a thought. “My parents cannot know if I am; you know I’d be dead! If my dad comes home and realize I didn’t got to work, he’d make sure I see the doctor tomorrow; our family doctor!” she pointed out “Kiara what if the doctor realizes I’m pregnant? My father would definitely get to know!”

“That is the reason we need to be sure of your pregnancy status before tomorrow” said Kiara softly

“But how Kiara, how?” asked Haida hopelessly

“I’ll take you to a different hospital for a pregnancy test” said Kiara spontaneously

“Kiara, I told my mom I was feeling weak and wanted to rest so not to visit the hospital. There’s no way I can leave the house then, else she’d be suspicious about something”

“You can tell her you are better now and would like to go to work”

“Kiara, I really do feel very weak. I don’t think I can go alone” s
aid Haida confusedly

“I told you I’m taking you there, didn’t I? I’m going with you” assured Kiara

“You are not skipping, are you? Don’t forget you have to ask permission on my behalf”

“Don’t worry, I’ll explain things to the CA; I know what to tell him. Besides, Osborn and Carol will be at his service if he needs anything”

“Kiara, you make it sound so simple but we both know it isn’t. Don’t forget Frances was fired because of absenteeism” said Haida, very uneasy about the idea of Kiara being absent from work. Lay-offs were quite the order of the day at Trinity Co, and a bit of negligence could surely earn anyone that.

“Frances was a regular victim of absents, unlike you and I. I am sure the CA would understand” said Kiara, convincingly.

  “What about lunch period?”

Kiara pouted “There is a meeting with Mr. Roberts. I really need to address the errors and get done with his statements. I decided to sacrifice my lunch time for that” she grimaced disappointedly when Haida exhaled in upset “Sorry…” her eyes pleaded.

“PTD!” said Haida suddenly, scrambling up.

  “What?!” Kiara scrambled up too

“Yes. Pregnancy Test Device. I can use that to find out if I am really pregnant” said Haida aptly

“But…you don’t have one, do you?”

“No…. You can get me one after work, can’t you?” asked Haida desperately and Kiara was confused. “Please Kiara” she whimpered “That is the only way now”

“What if anyone sees it. How will you explain yourself?”

“No one will. I’ll be careful. Which risk is better off anyway – to lose your job or for my parents to find out I’m pregnant?” asked Haida. If she was really pregnant, sooner or later, her parents would find out anyway, but she couldn’t bear the guilt if Kiara lost her job because of her. “You are running late for work Kiara; you must be on your way. I hope to see you this evening”

“I’ll be here after work” said Kiara, getting on her feet

  “Don’t forget….”

“I will not. I’ll bring it along” said Kiara and rushed out.
