Archer teetered on the edge of the crevice, waving his arms wildly to maintain his balance. Then the edge was empty. Archer’s scream filled the chamber as he fell into the pit.
Blount threw himself out of the way, sliding across the dirt floor as oblivion bloomed within the protective dome of the containment spell’s barriers. No sound escaped the dome, and Sam watched in horror as the air folded in on its self then shrank to a pinprick of darkness. The pinprick lasted seconds, then exploded in a blinding flash of matter and reality. She shielded her eyes with her arms and stumbled backwards into the darkness of unconsciousness.
Chapter Eight
Abdiel froze as he sensed the explosion. He was hovering at the top of one of the spires, still not having any luck gaining entry. After touching down on the dome of the spire, he wept. Wept for man, wept for the weight of the choice Blount had made, wwept for a long time. God hadn’t shown, and Abdiel wondered if He ever would.
He raised his head as someone stumbled from the opening far below. His wings fluttered in the breeze as he stood, tilting his head.
Something was different. The world had changed. The pall of death and destruction that had clothed the earth was gone. He lifted off and glided down to Blount’s side.
Blount glanced up and offered a tired smile. “It’s finished.”
“It’s finished.” The angel took Blount into his arms and embraced him.
This time, Abdiel thought.
