“Derrick, I love you too.”
His eyes went wide and the glossy sheen became more obvious.
“I don’t know what’s coming next, but I can’t imagine not having you in my life. I love you, Derrick.”
He leaned across the table and brushed a tear from my cheek. “Must be kismet, huh?”
“Kismet.”
Epilogue - Sophia
One year later…
“Three…two…one! Happy New Year!”
The cheers echoed around the walls of my apartment. Champagne glasses clinked together, ringing out above the cheers and applause. An arm snaked around my waist, spinning me to find myself face to face with the most handsome man in the room. “Here to collect my New Year’s Eve kiss,” he drawled, pushing my side swept bangs out of the way before dropping his lips to mine for a toe-curling good kiss that really wasn’t fit for an audience.
But neither of us cared.
“Hey, you two lovebirds need to get a room!” someone heckled from the other side of my sprawling apartment.
Derrick waved the voice off, without breaking away from me. We parted, grinning like lovesick teenagers, and then joined in with our family and friends to toast the New Year’s.
“Sparkling cider for you,” Derrick said, passing me a flute. “Next year’s gonna be a wild ride for sure,” Derrick said, grinning as he placed his palm against the barely-there bump where our daughter or son was growing.
“I think so,” I agreed, adding my hand to the back of his.
“What if we try to squeeze in one more big event this year?” Derrick asked, drawing my attention up, away from my swelling belly.
“What’s that?”
Derrick took a step back and dropped to a knee. My hands flew to cover my mouth to suppress a squeal.
“Sophia Rossi, you are the love of my life, my everything, my entire world. When I met you, I found everything I didn’t even know I was missing and I’m honored to be the one to stand beside you and raise our child. But there’s one thing I’d like to do first…” he popped open a small black box and revealed a pear-shaped sparkler. “Will you be my wife and spend the rest of this life with me, wherever it takes us?”
I nodded and struggled to bend over to kiss him. Derrick swept himself up from the floor, saving me the trouble, and wrapped me in his arms. “I love you, Sophia. Marry me.”
“I will, Derrick,” I replied, holding onto him for dear, sweet life.
The room erupted in cheers and applause as fireworks exploded on the other side of the floor to ceiling windows of my apartment. Derrick released me long enough to slip the gorgeous diamond ring on my finger and give me one more New Year’s kiss.
Life was always going to be an adventure, but with Derrick by my side, I knew I’d never have to face it alone.
