The Entity Game: An Aurora Donati Novel

by Lisa Shearin

This book had been taken off the shelf by David Barrington. I didn’t know when he had done it, but it would have been after he realized he’d been betrayed by Barton Renwick and the people in his own agency and government. He’d begun the Entity Project as a means to ensure peace by enhancing the psychokinetic ability of a man he saw as an avenging angel, and ideally the next step in human evolution.

I removed the book from the shelf and opened it.

In an envelope, taped to the inside back cover, was the disc with Barrington’s notes on the Entity Project. I slowly peeled off the envelope, taking extreme care not to damage the book. It was a first edition, and no doubt Julian had treasured it, as he had his friendship with David.

I tucked the envelope and disc into my purse. I’d deal with it later.

My eyes went to the last line of Darwin’s work.

There is a grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.
