“Mmmm... You should skip the panties more often,” Ryker growled, climbing up my body to lay beside me. His fingers toyed with my breasts, pinching and squeezing the tender nipples. “Makes me wanna do crazy things to you…”

I sagged into the pillows and rolled my eyes open again. I grinned up at him. “Then, I’ll never wear panties again.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep…” Ryker warned, his voice warm with amusement and content.

I pushed off the bed and straddled him, pinning him down to the bed. I ground against him, teasing his cock with my soaking wet pussy, and the smile at his lips fell away as his eyes went wide. He sucked in a shaky breath and his hands went to my hips. He pulled me down onto him, and we both groaned out at the tight fit. I rocked back and forth, slowly at first, letting him fill and stretch me, and then let him urge me faster with his hands, still at my hips. His hips raised to meet every thrust, and we moved together in a dizzying dance of give and take until we were both breathless and moaning. Ryker kept his eyes locked with mine as I rode him hard and fast, only closing them when he released. He jerked my hips still and I felt him pulsing inside. I collapsed down onto his slick chest, and rested my head against him, ignoring the thin sheet of sweat that clung to us. I pressed my ear to his heartbeat, and smiled when I found it was racing at the same speed as my own. We came down together, and eventually, Ryker rolled me to the side and slid out of me.

We lay face to face, our bodies flush against one another on the small bed. He traced a finger down my face and smiled.

“What are you thinking about?” I asked, my voice a whisper so as not to break the intimate bubble that surrounded us in the afterglow.

  “How much I missed you.”

  “I missed you too.”

Our vulnerable confessions hung in the space between us, neither of us sure what to say or do next. Ryker kept an arm draped over my waist, and my hands rested against his chest. I didn’t know what all of it meant. My thoughts and emotions were still a hot mess, and as much as I wanted to stay in bed beside him all afternoon, I knew it would only complicate things further. I pushed up to a sitting position and swung my legs over to the opposite side of the bed.

“Where are you running off to?” Ryker asked, a hint of alarm in his voice.

“I don’t know about you,” I grinned back at him, “but I’m starving. You wanna go get some dinner?”

Ryker grinned back at me and got out of bed. “My kind of girl. Fucking and food.”

I laughed and smacked his behind as he passed me on the way to the living room to retrieve the rest of our clothing.

I woke up pressed against Ryker’s chest. My full size bed was really no place for two people, but we hadn’t minded the night before when we finally collapsed together after hours of pleasuring one another. Ryker’s chest was bare, and I traced my hands over the smooth, but firm, lines of his muscled torso. My heart swelled with love as I watched him sleeping. His jaw was relaxed and the lines of stress were smoothed. I didn’t think I’d ever seen him so at peace. Ryker was always an intense guy, one of the things I’d come to adore about him, but it was nice to see him fully relaxed.

My fingers worked their way south, somewhat involuntarily, seeking out the heat below the covers. I bit back a smile when I found his morning erection. I stifled a giggle and resisted the urge to tease him into waking up. My body was spent from the night before, but as my mind got carried away with a new batch of impossibly naughty thoughts, a new wave of warmth built between my legs, and I squirmed against Ryker’s sleeping form.

“Mmmm, someone’s all ready to go…” he mumbled, popping open one eye to glance over at me.

I jumped, startled to find him awake and my cheeks went red hot. I extracted my hands from his body and did my best to keep them to myself—which was impossible in such a small bed. “Good morning.”

“It’s about to be,” he growled, rolling and pinning me under his naked body.

When we finally stumbled out of bed and into the shower, it was nearing lunch time. My heart sank as I remembered what Ryker had said the day before. He had a flight to catch. I couldn’t remember the specific time, but I knew it was rapidly sneaking up on us. He sauntered into the kitchen as I was pouring two cups of coffee from the French press carafe.

“Mmmm, that smells amazing.” He wrapped an arm around my waist as he came up from behind me, and smelled my neck. “So does the coffee.”

“Smooth,” I replied, rolling my eyes playfully. “Here.”

He released me and took the cup I offered him. He paused at the counter to doctor it up with milk and a drizzle of honey, before joining me at the table. “What’s your plan for today?”

His question threw me off. Without a job, I had nowhere to be, and now that Tori was gone, that stress had been lifted as well. I was left with a clear calendar for the first time in years. It wouldn’t stay that way for long. At some point, I’d need to hire movers, rent a storage space for all of Tori’s belongings, and start working on my own move back to Kentucky. But, all of that faded as I looked across the table into Ryker’s eyes. “I’m not really sure. I could uhm, give you a ride to the airport.”

“Aha. So, you’ve had your fun and now it’s time to shuffle me off?” Ryker’s eyes were bright with an amused glow. “Seriously, though, Ev. What’s next? When are you leaving to go back to Kentucky?”

I sighed. “I don’t really know. I just made the decision a couple of days ago. I need to call my mother and see if she knows of any spaces available to lease so I can start my own studio. And, I’ll need to find my own apartment because there’s no way I’m staying with her and her husband.”

Ryker nodded and looked down at his coffee, considering my words as he swirled the dark, steaming contents. “Well, if that’s what you really want, then just let me know if I can help in any way. I know a few people out that way. I could make some calls.”

“I’ll let you know. Hey, we’ll practically be neighbors,” I joked, desperate to lighten the mood again.

“If you want, I did have a plan B that you might be interested in.” I set down my own mug and waited for him to continued. “Miss Darcy’s dance academy, the little studio that I showed you when you were visiting, sure looks like it could use a little love. I think we could even find someone who would let you stay with them while you get everything up and running.”

I sucked in a sharp breath. Was he saying what I thought he was saying? “Ryker…I…”

He abandoned his mug and reached for my hands, taking them in his from across the table. His thumbs brushed the back of my knuckles with a lover’s caress. “I’m serious, Ev. I want you with me. I can’t imagine us not being together and now that that show is out of the picture and you can move wherever you want, I want you with me. Come to Oklahoma.”

His steady voice was spiked with a subtle twinge of urgency, as though his life depended on my answer being yes. I wanted to say yes, so badly. To let myself fall into the beautiful, serene picture he painted with his words. But, struggled to let myself fall into the world he wanted to create with me. “I don’t have that kind of money, Ryker. I’d have no way to rent it. As it is, I’m going to have to ask my mother’s husband for a loan. The only way I’m going to get that is if I move home, or at least, Kentucky. Oklahoma is—”

“Everlie, this isn’t about money,” he interrupted. “This is about us. If you want to be with me, and come to Oklahoma, and be with me on the ranch, and build some dreams, then we’ll make it happen. This isn’t about your bank account, Ev. It’s about your heart. What do you want?”

My hands shook, but Ryker only held them tighter. “I want to be with you, Ryker. I do.”

A slow, relieved smile spread across Ryker’s face and my heart jolted into overdrive as I smiled back, matching his growing excitement. “Then, let’s get you packed!”

  “Really? Just like that?”

Ryker stood and pulled me up fro
m the table. He cupped my face in his hands and brushed my cheeks with his thumbs. “Just like that. I love you, Everlie Harmon.”

  “I love you too, Ryker.”

He kissed me soft and sweet, but with a hint of heat that was a secret promise for what would come later. When we broke apart, he kept his hands on my face like I was a treasured jewel. “In all this madness, we’ve spent way too much time missing each other and being alone, scared and confused. So, let’s not waste one more day.”

  “Agreed.”

  Chapter One

  Jack

A clear, blue canopy stretched overhead, barely even a whisper of a cloud as far as I could see. Another perfect day in Northern California. And, most importantly, a perfect day for flying.

“All set, Boomer?” A voice buzzed into my ear through my headset.

I smirked as I glanced over the control panel, the use of my call sign always brought a smile, remembering the day it had been given to me. I flashed a thumbs-up through the front window. “Let’s do it!”

My F-18 Hornet fighter jet was alive and begging to get airborne. The machine was raw power, made to take over the sky, and I couldn’t wait to get it back where it belonged. My hand rested on the throttle, itching to get going, as I waited for the all clear to come over the radio. When I was granted permission, I pushed forward and made my way down the runway, gaining speed with each yard, until I gracefully lifted up at the perfect, sweet spot moment, to take to the sky. I loved just about every part of flying, but my favorite part was still taking off from an aircraft carrier—that split second right as the plane left the deck, dipped down and then roared into the air. At that moment, it was like my mind and body melded with the machine, giving it life and purpose, as we soared together into a new adventure.

The jet roared as I urged it higher and faster, and I smiled to myself at the raw power. For now—this would do.

  Flying was freedom.

I climbed quickly, my internal autopilot taking over every motion. I was recently assigned a new plane and still getting the feel for it. Planes are like women and can be a little temperamental at times.

Today’s’ mission was simple. All I needed to do was get in the air and make sure everything was in tip top shape. A straight up work-up flight. Nothing more. The real action would begin about a month from now, when I’d be on a WestPac somewhere overseas, I will be flying missions over hostile territory most likely in the middle east somewhere. The ATC in the tower, cut into my musings. “Looks good Boomer. Everything check out okay?”

“Affirmative,” I replied, doing another quick scan over the array of instruments in the cockpit. “I’m gonna take her out and stretch her legs a bit—be back in thirty.”

“Copy that. When you get back, the Captain wants to have a word.”

“Great, Roger that.” I clicked off the radio and focused my attention on the task at hand —it was just me and the blue sky ahead. For a moment, my mind hinged on what the Cap
tain could possibly want to discuss when I landed, but I pushed that out of my mind and focused on the plane. If there were any problems, they needed to be resolved now. It would be a helluva lot easier to fix things at the base, rather than from an aircraft carrier, or even more daunting—in-country. Not that I expected perfection. That was unrealistic. There were always hiccups. In a little over two weeks, my unit would be embarking on my third WestPac to the Middle East. Since this wasn’t my first rodeo, most of the basics were second nature, but it was important to not get too lax, because that’s when most mistakes were made. And mistakes where I’m headed had a tendency to be fatal ones.

I climbed a little higher and shifted my focus, putting all thoughts of the upcoming mission out of my head.

Flying, especially when I was alone with no threat or danger, was the best place for me to clear my mind. It became something of a meditation session, often my only place where I have true clarity in the middle of my busy, break-neck life’s pace as a Naval Fighter Pilot. I’d recently turned thirty and something about crossing that milestone was hanging in the back of my mind and forcing me to look back with more reflection than I usually did.

As I circled back towards the base, I spotted my 69 Camaro gleaming in the side lot outside my office. It had been a graduation gift from my father, who had purchased it brand new back in his early twenties. Although it was a hand me down, there was nothing second rate about it. He’d kept it in phenomenal condition over the years, often times spending entire weekends working on it out in the garage back when my younger brother, Cody, and I were growing up. The day he’d handed me the keys, I’d been overcome with emotion, and at first, refused such a grand gift, but the look in my father’s eyes that day had assured me it was what he wanted. Cody, of course, had been butt-hurt about it for a while, but when he graduated and received a huge check, he shut up about the car.
