He felt his world spinning out of control. He was a father. A FATHER. He thought he heard someone say, “Lookout, he’s going down,” just before his world winked out and he hit the ground hard.

  EPILOGUE

The family filed into the house once again, their collective moods somber and broken after the memorial service for their fallen family members. “Why can’t we just bring them back?” Brea asked plaintively.

Angel wrapped his arms around his wife, giving her the comfort of his strength. “I don’t know, Love.”

  “The spells should have worked.”

“The spells didn’t work because we do not have a necromancer anymore,” Serena said. “Macy was the only true necromancer I had ever met. Without her power to call the dead, we just are not strong enough. Not even together.”

“I dreamed about them,” Jessica said. She wasn’t sure this was the time, but if she could bring her family even a minimal amount of peace, it was worth a try.

“What?” Frankie asked. She grabbed Jessica by the shoulders and forced her to look into her eyes. “Why didn’t you tell us?”

“I was waiting for the right time,” she said with a sad smile. “They were dancing in a room full of light.”

Leigh held little Toni tighter in her arms. “I like that,” she said, wiping a tear from her eye. “He is with her now. They can finally be happy.” The baby cooed her agreement with her mother. Antonio was the reason Leigh and the baby survived and she would carry his name with pride for the rest of her life.

“I will not give up,” Jacque said. “I will find a way.”

“And do what?” Frankie demanded. “We all knew Antonio wasn’t going to stay with us. He was dying faster every day. So you want to just keep bringing him back?”

“I don’t know,” Jacque said. He ran his hand over his spikey hair and looked at his mate with defeat in his eyes. “I’m so tired of losing people. There has to be a way.”

It was at that moment that music filled the house. It began softly, but got louder quickly. It was Bob Marley singing Every Little Thing’s Gonna Be Alright.

“What the...” Everyone turned their heads in all directions, looking for the source of the music.

“Why is my house playing reggae?” Brea asked with her hand on her hip and a small smile.

Jessica outright laughed. “It’s the song that they were dancing to in my dream!”

“I was one of his favorite songs,” Gage said unable to stop himself from smiling too.

“I think he’s trying to tell us something,” Frankie said, taking Jacque’s hand. “He is telling us that he is ok. And we should dance.” She pulled Jacque into the center of the room and danced to the music that seemed to come from nowhere and yet was everywhere at the same time.

The others joined in, each dancing and laughing together, putting their pain aside and celebrating the life of the man who gave himself for them a second time.

“Nice touch,” Antonio said to Macy as he held her hand high and watched her twirl to the music.

“I know right,” she smiled up at him. “I think they got the message.”

He took both of her hands in his own and grinned. “I think we can go now,” he said.

  “Yeah, we can,” she agreed.

The couple held hands and walked side by side into the most brilliant light, taking them to their own happily ever after.
