Chapter One
Five years earlier
“Move your ass, Nicole.”
Jasmine Wishner, Nicole Monroe’s best friend since they’d found each other gathering flowers in a pasture, tugged on her arm. Jasmine had always been more adventurous, but Nicole had to wonder if she’d finally gone too far.
“I don’t think this is a good idea. You know they won’t want us here.”
The bonfire rose high into the air as the loud music boomed around them. At least two dozen teenage shifters danced around the fire, most of them drinking beer. Their cheers and laughter rang out, at once exhilarating and nerve-wracking.
“Don’t go all chicken on me now, Nic. We said we were going to do this so we’re going to do this.”
“But they’re werewolves.”
“Yeah? So? That’s not new information, you know.”
Nicole bit her lower lip. “And I’m a werebear. The two don’t get along.”
“And I’m human. We humans get along with everyone.”
Jasmine tugged on her arm, and again, she held back. She laughed, but the sound was frayed around the edges. “Oh, yeah. Just watch the evening news and you’ll see how well humans get along.”
Jasmine rolled her eyes. “You think I don’t know it?”
“I didn’t mean it that way.”
As an African American, Jasmine had a rougher time than most kids in those parts. She was definitely a minority both as a black girl, but also as a human surrounded by shifters, vampires, fairies, and other supernatural beings living in the small towns of Forever and Shatland. But Jasmine was tough. Most likely by birth and, from what she’d seen, by necessity. Whatever the reason, all that mattered was that Jasmine was a great friend.
“Come on.”
Taking her by both arms, Jasmine pulled her out of the bushes and into the clearing. The werewolves had built the bonfire on a wide space of dirt, keeping the fire from spreading to the surrounding pasture and trees. She could already feel the heat turning her skin warm.
“Try to blend in, will ya?”
Blend in? How did a werebear blend in with werewolves? Were there any vampires around? Any supernatural beings other than werewolves? If so, maybe the other teens would be more open to having her around.
As a human, Jasmine was friends with both werewolves and werebears. She’d even tried to get one shifter or another to turn her, but they’d always said no, telling her she wasn
t old enough. Once Jasmine celebrated her eighteenth birthday in another two years, she’d have a better chance of getting a shifter to transform her.
Nicole hesitated again, still unsure about crashing a werewolf party. If her father found out, he’d skin her alive. Provided the werewolves didn’t do it first.
Still, maybe they were like her. Maybe they thought it was stupid for werewolves and werebears to hate each other. After all, they were both shape-shifters. What did it matter if one changed into a wolf and the other into a bear? Didn’t they both have fur? Didn’t they both have long, vicious teeth? Weren’t they still human, too?
“Nic, come on.” Jasmine spun around, then started dancing along with the first free guy she ran into. In a matter of moments, she was swallowed up by the throng of partiers.
Shit.
She should’ve kept up with Jasmine. Standing alone, surrounded by a large group of werewolves, didn’t make her feel safe at all.
Should I leave? But what about Jasmine?
Indecision hit her, keeping her rooted to the spot. Her father’s deep voice boomed in her head, spouting warnings to stay away from werewolves.
“Werewolves are no-good animals. They’re dirty and sneaky bastards, every single one of them.”
She’d only asked her father once why he thought that way. When he’d roared at her, his animal close to the surface, she’d backed off and listened to her mother admonish her for making her dad angry.
“Don’t you ever go near a werewolf. And stay the hell away from Forever. You set foot in their sorry excuse for a town and you’re going to get your tail bit off.”
She’d never be able to change her parents’ minds. Looking around her, she wasn’t even sure she should. Maybe they were right. And if they were, she’d just stepped into a pack of wild animals.
A tall skinny boy bumped into her, his beer can held above his head. He leered at her with alcohol-blurred eyes, then continued to gyrate around her. She remained as quiet as she could be, suddenly afraid he’d realize what she was. But he was too caught up in the music. Chugging his beer, he tossed the can aside, belched, then danced away.
She let out a ragged breath. Although she probably hadn’t been in any kind of danger, it was still too close of an encounter. She had to find Jasmine and get out of there while she could.
But where was she?
It was difficult enough to try to see into the mass of bodies, but being shorter than most of the guys didn’t help. Either she had to push her way through them and hope she ran into her friend or she had to get up higher for a better view.
She looked around and found exactly what she needed. Three beer kegs rested off to the side. If they’d been full earlier, she doubted they were any longer. No one was standing around them.
Pushing her way past several dancers, she tested the barrels to see how steady they were, then carefully climbed on top of them. Taking her time as her makeshift platform wobbled underneath her, she finally got to her feet, balancing on two of them. At that height, she towered over everyone else, giving her a good view of the crowd.
Starting at the far end, she began searching for Jasmine. With her friend wearing her favorite red-and-white shirt, spotting her should’ve been easy. If she called out, her voice probably wouldn’t be heard anyway, so she just kept looking, narrowing her search area down little by little.
“Damn it. Where are you?”
Even after getting Jasmine to promise they’d stick together, she wouldn’t be surprised to find out that she’d taken off with one of the boys. Once the headstrong girl got an idea in her head, it was there to stay.
As much as she loved her friend, she realized Jasmine was too hard-headed and too reckless. Jasmine had been trying for the past two years to get a shifter, werewolf or werebear, to bite and change her, and she was getting desperate to make it happen. Although Nicole had tried telling her that being a shifter wasn’t so great, Jasmine hadn’t believed her. Which made sense because Nicole loved what she was and wouldn’t have wanted to be anything other than a werebear.
She kept looking. What if Jasmine really had gone off with someone? Should she stick around and wait for her to come back? But that could mean hanging around for hours, if not all night. If she wasn’t back before her curfew, her father would come looking for her. He’d sniff her down even in the middle of nowhere. And if he found her on werewolf land at a werewolf party, she could kiss her freedom good-bye. The next few months would be spent at home or at the co-op school for werebears. Even Jasmine wouldn’t be allowed to visit her.
Damn it, Jasmine, where are you?
She was searching so intently that she didn’t notice a couple of girls staring at her. Getting on top of the barrels had made looking for her friend easier, but it had also made her more conspicuous. By the time she realized her mistake, it was too late.
“Hey, what are you doing here?”
At first, she hoped the pretty blonde werewolf wasn’t talking to her.
“Are you deaf, werebear? I asked you what you’re doing here.”
Werebear. Damn. The girl knew.
She was caught, but she still tried to get out of it. “Who, me?”
Yeah, like they can’t tell what I am.
“A werebear? She’s a fucking werebear?” The pimply-faced boy standing next to the pretty blonde pointed at her. “Holy shit. Talk about balls. You’ve got guts showing up at our party.”
With a screech, the music playing from two speakers resting on the outskirts of the group came to an ear-splitting stop.
“Why is a werebear crashing our party? Huh? What the hell, bitch?”
Other calls erupted around her as the rest of the group soon caught on to what was going down. The crowd, angry faces glaring at her, inched closer. Her perch on top of the barrels had now become her prison. She was trapped as the teens circled around her.
“Answer up, werebear. Why are you here?” A tall boy pushed through the crowd and came closer, getting within a foot of her. He was old enough to have heavy stubble running along his jawline. His dark eyes blazed with flecks of amber, showing his wolf rising to the surface.
“I—I just came—” At that moment, she wasn’t sure why’d she’d come. The idea had been Jasmine’s, but she should’ve known it would cause trouble. “I mean, I just wanted to see—”
“To see what, little bear?” His mean grin warped into a sneer, all too reminiscent of a wolf’s snarl. “To see how the better half lives?”
His joke wasn’t very funny, but the others laughed like crazy. Fear seized her as she scanned the group, once more trying to find her friend. But what would Jasmine be able to do? She couldn’t help her. In fact, she might end up getting hurt, too.
“My name isn’t little bear. It’s Nicole. Nicole Monroe.”
“I don’t give a fuck what your name is. Why are you here?”
“I, uh, I just wanted to come to a party. That’s all.” She was close to tears, but she’d be damned before she cried in front of them.
“Werebears don’t have parties, Marty.” The skinny boy from earlier had another beer in his hand. “They like to sleep and get fat instead of having fun.”
More laughter burst out around her. Maybe, just maybe, if they kept laughing, they wouldn’t hurt her. But her hopes were soon dashed.
“I don’t like you being here, little bear.”
What could she say to Marty? “I’m sorry.” She nibbled at her lower lip. “I’ll leave.”
“Like hell you will.”
Her alarm leapt into full-on panic. She wobbled on top of the barrels and almost fell before steadying herself.
“Since you’re here, little bear, you’re going to put on a show for us.” Marty turned around, his arms out-stretched. “You came here to see us so I think it’s only fair that we see you. Am I right, everyone?”
What did he mean? They could see her really well. Fear curled into her stomach, tightening it until she felt nauseous. When Marty pivoted back
toward her, his lecherous expression turned her cold.
“Tell you what. You give us a good show and we might just let you stay.” More amber flecks flashed in his eyes. “But if we don’t like your show, we’ll make you pay for crashing our party.”
She didn’t ask what they’d do to her, and she didn’t want to know what he wanted her to do. And yet, she couldn’t stop herself from asking. “What do you want me to do?”
“Nothing much.” He crossed his arms. “Just a dance, is all.”
Relief swamped her so hard and fast her knees grew weak. “A dance? That’s it?”
“Sure.” He held his hand up at the groans coming from the others. “Yeah, just a dance. A dance where you take off your clothes.”
She felt the color drain from her face. “You want me to strip?”
“You got it, baby. Make it good and we’ll let you stay. If not…” He shrugged as though it didn’t matter one way or another to him.
“You’re kidding.” The beast inside her woke up, growling as it tried to reach the surface. The fear that had gripped her before began to morph into anger. “There’s no way in hell I’m going to take off my clothes.”
Marty’s smile twisted into something else. A very wicked, evil something else. “Then I guess we’ll just have to take your clothes off for you.” He lurched forward, reaching for her.
Nicole let out a surprised yelp, jarring the barrels, and losing her balance. She fell backward as Marty’s fingers brushed her legs.
Then, just as she was about to hit the ground, strong arms caught her. She stared into the handsome face of a young male werewolf, his dark gaze fixed to hers. Before she could think what he might do, he set her on her feet.
