“What do they look like?”
Asey eyed her.
“Clam chowder, hot biscuits, strawberry shortcake! Jennie, I feel a touch. What’s comin’?”
Jennie said with asperity that she couldn’t imagine what he meant.
“It’s just a regular meal, that’s all, and it only happens just by the merest chance to be all the things you like! I haven’t any ulterior motives! And don’t you dare say it’s because I want to be taken to the auction in Orleans to-morrow, because it is not, and I never mentioned it or brought the matter up!” She paused. “I don’t suppose you would think of going, would you?”
“I’ll take you,” Asey said when he and Cummings had stopped laughing, “but I wouldn’t think of going myself, Jennie! I’ve had all the going I want. I’m gone!”
