Angel's Flight

by Juliet Waldron

“Off you go,” Jack said, unseating Kitty from his knee.

“Uncle Jack!” Kitty protested, whirling around.

“You are too old to play the little girl, miss. Off with you now and help tend the guests in the parlor. Your Papa and Miss Annie need you to stand by them.”

“Papa doesn’t need me at all!” Kitty pouted.

“He needs you as much as ever,” Angelica said firmly. “And he loves you as much as ever, too. So does Miss Annie.”

“Ha! Nobody loves me! Not you, not Uncle Jack—nobody!” Kitty flounced away and banged through the door.

Jack turned to Angelica and shook his head. “There’ll be trouble there.”

“‘Tis a difficult age, but she’ll settle. Arent’s marrying Annie isn’t much of a change. After all, Annie’s lived in their house and cared for Kitty and her brothers ever since their mother died.”

“Kitty thinks things have changed, and that’s what matters,” Jack observed.

“Annie is sensible and kind, but—I guess you’re right, Jack. Kitty is a young lady and not a little girl anymore. She needs to go forward and not back. In a year or so, she may have a sweetheart of her own.”

Jack nodded. There was a kind of silence, broken only by the fire, the hissing teakettle, and some small hiccupping noises contributed by Jacob, still working on that bubble.

“Not a year ago my ship anchored in New York harbor. And, now, look at me.” Jack’s gray eyes shone with amusement, bright as if a full winter moon had risen behind them.

The sight of her husband, sitting in one of those familiar wing chairs, boots squarely on the black-and-white tile, made Angelica almost dizzy with joy.

“Here I am,” her husband mused. “Twenty-one years a fighting man suddenly up to my neck in domesticity—and loving it. ‘Tis quite astonishing what a year in America can do.”
