Wilson thought for a moment. Maybe he was wrong for the way he spoke to his mother.

“Look. Go out there and bring your brother back. And protect yourself also. We don’t want our family any more stressed than it already is.”

  Wilson hugged his Dad.

“Remember. As long as you and mom are on this land, you’re safe. Grandma Noya made sure she had enough supplies to last for a while. I shouldn’t be too long. You and mom can use this alone time to try to fix a few things between you.”

“That’s going to be hard when our children are missing, and the spirits of the dead surround us.”

  “You’ll find a way.”

  Dustin smiled.

“Sure, we will, Son. Sure, we will.”

  Chapter 37: The Warriors

As Wilson walked to the edge of the forest, he paused. He saw what looked like several spirits standing there waiting for him. There were a young African American boy and two Native American boys. But these spirits seemed different because they didn’t have the same mystical glow as the others. These spirits seemed – real.

As Wilson walked closer, he heard the boys speaking to one another.

  “Is it him?”

  “Yeah. That’s Wilson.”

“I thought he was going to be bigger. He doesn’t look like much.”

Finally, Wilson stopped just in front of the spot where he’d last seen his brother.

“Who are you? What do you want?” Wilson asked as he stared at the boys suspiciously. The black kid spoke up first.

  “I’m Tariq. I think you’re my cousin.”

  “Cousin?”

“At least that’s what my mom told me.”

The two other boys spoke up.

“I’m Takatoka, and this is Calian. We’re your cousins too.”

“So, I’m just supposed to accept three strange kids that show up claiming to be related to me as my family?”

  Tariq spoke up.

“You can accept what you want. But we live in the world just like you do. And if we don’t find a way to deal with what’s happening, we’re all dead.”

  “How did you find me?”

“The same way you knew we would come. The spirits told us.”

Wilson walked past the boys into the forest.

“Thanks, but I don’t think I need your help. You’ll slow me down.”

  Calian started laughing.

  “What’s so funny?”

“You. You’re acting like a real dummy now. Didn’t you lose your brother to that evil man? And you don’t need our help? Who are you fooling?”

“Well…I don’t need your help. I can protect myself.”

  This time Takatoka spoke.

“We know about your powers, but do you know about ours?”

Wilson was surprised. He hadn’t considered that the boys had something worthwhile to contribute.

“What can you do?” asked Wilson.

“I have the power to disappear,” replied Takatoka. “I can also make animals do what I want.”

  Wilson turned to Tariq.

“And you? What can you do?”

“I can speak to the spirits.”

  Wilson turned to Calian.

  “What can you do?”

  “I ain’t telling you shit.”

  “What?”

“This ain’t no fucking job interview. I can take care of myself. That’s all you need to know.”

Wilson smiled. Calian’s sharp tongue reminded him of his brother Michael.

“Fine. But I’m not babysitting any kids. If you can’t protect yourself, you get left behind.”

Wilson started walking through the forest.

“You know, you don’t have to act like an arrogant prick about this. We are your family, you know,” said Takatoka as they walked behind Wilson.

“We need to work together, guys. Like it or not, we all live in this world. And if we don’t stop this demon from taking over, we’re all dead.”

As the group of boys disappeared into the forest, the spirit of the old man stood watching them until they were gone.

“That’s a strong group of hunters. Too bad one of them will die before the second sunset. If only they knew what the Evil One had in store for them.”
