She saw a kindness in his eyes that had been absent for years and it caught her words in her throat. “We can’t stay, Dad,” she told him. “No matter how much we want to, we don’t belong here.” Jade took a final look at the cabin, catching the sound of a car engine approaching. “We have to let them find their own future.”

The old man nodded. “Your mother would be proud of you,” he said, and he touched the activation pad.

Exotic radiation glimmered over the lake like summer lightning, and they vanished.

With Teal’c following behind, Sam walked toward the back of the cabin. “So, what movie did you bring?” she threw the question over her shoulder.

The Jaffa held up a DVD case. “Timecop.”

Carter rolled her eyes and crossed around to the lakeside. She found Daniel and Jack on the porch, each man with two beers in their hands, each with a lost, rueful expression.

“Hey,” she called, stepping up to take a bottle from both of them. “Thanks.” She passed a beer to Teal’c and the Jaffa raised an eyebrow as he took off his hat.

“Where are the others?” he asked.

Jackson sat down silently and O’Neill nodded to himself. “They… They had to go.”

  “Where?” Carter looked around.

  “Home,” said Daniel.

The members of SG-1 sat in silence, taking in the measure of Jackson’s statement; finally it was Teal’c who spoke. “Kinsey will not be pleased.”

“Oh yeah,” said Jack, “like that’s a surprise.”

“He’ll be very angry,” Daniel said distantly. “Very, very angry.”

“He will,” agreed the colonel, “so at least there’s one good thing.”

Sam motioned to get up. “We should radio in to the SGC, inform General Hammond.”

Jack waved her suggestion away. “Nah. They gave us a good day. Let’s not waste it.”

“If not for Jade and her father, we would have no ‘good days’,” noted Teal’c.

Sam paused with her beer at her lips, and then held it up in salute. “To the future?” she offered.

“The future,” said Jack, “and whatever challenges it brings.”

  The four bottles clinked together.
