  Arvalaeon knew when they did. He was the last of the Lords Inquisitor, and a Lord Inquisitor could speak no lies…but conversely, no one could speak a lie to a Lord Inquisitor.

  Nadia and Riordan walked to the front door, and Arvalaeon stepped to the side to let them pass. The Cloak spell hid him from all senses save touch, and it would do no good to have them blunder into him. He followed Nadia and Riordan into the cold darkness of a winter night in Wisconsin, smoothly stepping aside as Nadia closed the door.

  The Shadow Hunter and the thief walked to the sidewalk, and then kissed each other good night.

  “Hey,” said Nadia in a soft voice. “I love you.”

  The silver fire in Arvalaeon’s veins thrummed with the truth of it.

  “I love you too,” said Riordan, and they kissed again.

  Truth burned through Arvalaeon’s blood. The Shadow Hunter and the thief. They shouldn’t have been together. He was so much older than she was, and she lived and breathed lies. Yet they were together. They were right for one another. Arvalaeon had spent a long time watching humans, and he knew the truth when he saw it.

  Riordan climbed into a car and drove away, and Nadia watched him go.

  She was smiling.

  Arvalaeon stepped in front of her, close enough that he could have touched her, and squatted down to look into her gray eyes.

  “I am sorry,” said Arvalaeon. “I am sorry for what I am going to have to do to you. It will be a terrible thing. But it is necessary. I promise you that. Necessary.”

  Nadia could not see him, of course, nor hear him. She turned and walked into the house, closing the door behind her.

  Arvalaeon straightened up, turned, and departed.

  There was a great deal of work to be done.
