  She’s here now, standing in the hospital corridor, looking at me as I write. If I were a religious man (and how is it that after all this, I’m still not?), I’d say she was an angel watching over us. To my mind, she’s something better than that. A human soul trying to do good.

  But she’s gone now.

  A nurse is there, standing in the space the Good Mother had occupied a second ago. I’d write more, but the nurse is talking to me.

  She tells me you’re awake.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR
