“Ma’am, I'm going to need you to calm down and tell me very clearly what happened,” said the portly police officer.

“I... I don’t know. Please, sir, tell me again where I am.”

“Ma'am, we’ve been over this. You are at the police station. We found you adrift just off the docks. Is this boy your son?”

“Boy? The boy who came out of the sky? He flew right up! I saw him!”

The officer shook his head as he looked at the woman. She had a child with her; her husband, a friend of the boat’s registered owner, was missing, and she was clearly suffering from some sort of delusion. He stepped out of the room and placed a telephone call to the local sanatorium.

They came for her within the hour. She went kicking and screaming into the custody of the asylum workers. Her boy, who said his name was Finn, stayed with the officer until he could be gathered up by the proper authorities, at which time he was transferred into the custody of his aunt.

The officer could not forget that woman and her son. He thought of them often, and while his heart hurt for the boy, he was much more concerned with the mental state of the woman. She had seemed indifferent to the child, as if she didn’t know him. She’d asked the same questions over and over again.

What a pity, thought the officer. Now she will spend her days in Laurelhurst Sanatorium. That was a fate he would not wish on anyone.
