“You trusted her and not me,” she said. “What do you call that?”

“In my sick mind, I guess I thought I was protecting you,” he said. “Here.”

“No, Derrick,” she said tearfully, refusing to take the ring box from him. “I want a divorce.”

“Well, you know us,” he said. “If you still feel that way in six months, we’ll do it. Just not today. I’ve got to be somewhere, so I’m going.”

With that, Derrick crammed the box into her hand, kissed her on the forehead, and walked toward the conference room into a crowd of people.

Corrine waited until her emotions calmed so she could pop in and hand the ring back to him. She was sure he wouldn’t make a scene by insisting that she take it. About five minutes later, she found herself walking in and sitting quietly in the back of the crowd.

Derrick spotted her almost immediately, winked at her, and smiled from across the room.

“My name is Ralph, and I’m a gambling addict,” said the guy at the podium, catching Corrine’s attention.

Gamblers Anonymous? She smiled, looking around at the other people in the room.

Derrick got out of his seat and discreetly made his way to the coffee pot. He quickly filled two cups, treated them properly with creamer and sweetener, and then walked over to sit down next to Corrine. Love flowed between them, just as it always had.

She opened the ring box quietly, reached under the table, and placed her left hand on his thigh, wiggling the appropriate finger in anticipation.

Derrick smiled victoriously and eagerly slipped the ring on, never taking his eyes off hers. “My name is Derrick Quinn, and I am addicted to you.”
