Gwen then got in one, the mood light now. Even Sam was smiling, something he hadn’t been doing a lot of lately.

Hailey pounded on the door to the concessions. She was about to knock again, but Morgan ripped it open. He was dressed in a tight, black body shirt, baggy shorts covering his legs. He sent her a dirty look and shoved past.

“Interrupt something?” Hailey asked in a sarcastic tone, her eyes following Morgan out. She then turned to Gwen. “And why did you lock the door?”

“I didn’t know it was locked.” Gwen was licking her lips, a shakiness in her voice. She was wearing a Kats jersey. It wasn’t Morgan’s number though, it was Sam’s. Tonight was the first game of the season, something that the boys were very excited about.

“What were you doing in here?” Hailey went to the pop machine and made sure there were enough cups stacked near it.

  “Morgan needed some Gatorade.”

“Really?” Hailey sent her friend a very suspicious look. “He wasn’t carrying a—”

“I’ll be right back.” Gwen dashed out of the stand and over to a few players that were gathered down the hall. They were all in various states of dress and seemed to be slacking off a bit. She jumped up and hugged Sam, which surprised him.

“Hey!” Instead of being angry though, Sam hugged her back. “Like the uniform change.” He pointed to her jersey.

“Yeah. I thought it was pretty cool that the manager let us wear them for the games.”

“Here.” Kingley started to remove his. “Wear a winning one.” He threw it at her. Sam shot him an annoyed glance, but it only made Kingley laugh. Then, Kingley lobbed Gwen a roll of tape. “Help us suit up, Mrs. Tanner.”

“Knock it off.” Sam ripped it from Gwen’s hand and tossed it back at Kingley angrily.

Kingley caught the roll. “I was serious. Tape my socks.”

“Dude, stop it.” Sam punched his shoulder.

“I got you reserved for next week.” Kingley motioned to his jersey. “’Kay?”

“Sure.” Gwen laughed, fisting the slick material.

“Get back in there!” Kent’s loud voice made Gwen turn. He ushered the boys back into the dressing room before turning to Gwen. “And back to work for you, Gwen.”

She nodded, moving back to the concession stand. Her gaze darted around the crowd coming in. She was feeling excited about tonight, but wished she could watch the games instead of working at them. Still, she could hear the announcements from the booth.

The stand quickly got swamped when the people were let in, and she worked hard to get orders out.

She was in a better mood now that she had stood up to her mother and said no more competitions. The freedom to use her time in other ways was a welcome relief. Though, she was still counting down the months until she could move in with Morgan.

Gwen handed off a large tub of popcorn to a patron then went to the next customer. She paused, looking at the girl in shock. Then, Gwen recovered and greeted her warmly, “Anne. What are you doing here?”

”I came with Joan to see Sam play,” Anne answered softly. Her belly was bulging, her due date very soon.

“That’s great!” Gwen pushed back a stray strand of hair that had fallen into her eyes. “Thanks for coming. Can I get you something?”

“Popcorn and a lemonade.” She appeared nervous.

“I’m glad you and Sam are getting along now.”

“Me, too.” Anne still seemed unsure of her own words.

After filling Anne’s order, Gwen pulled off her jersey and handed it to Anne. “Here. Wear this and cheer him on for me. Kingley gave me his to wear, anyway.”

“Okay.” Anne draped the shirt over her arm. “Thanks, Gwen.”

“You’re welcome.” Sending one last smile, Gwen waited on the next customer.

After the game, Gwen went to greet Morgan and Sam. On her way, she saw Anne talking to her brother. They were down the hall and away from the others. Anne was talking nervously, and from what she could see, Gwen thought they seemed to be getting along.

“Rockin’ the fifteen!” Kingley shouted at her, making her jump. “Looks hot on you, Roberts!” He seemed to be gearing up to say something else, but Morgan whacked him on the back of the head.

Gwen walked closer, holding out her arms. “Awesome game, Tanner!”

Morgan jogged down to her and gave her a tight hug. He picked her up off her feet, squeezing so hard that she punched on his back to get him to let go. He got his victory kiss then turned to look at Sam. “Dude’s finally growing up, huh?”

“Are they back together? Last I heard, Sam said they were sharing custody of the baby when it’s born.”

“Well,” Morgan sighed. “Sam told me he’s gonna try to be with her for the kid.”

“I like this grown up Sam.” Gwen giggled when Morgan tickled her sides roughly then she started slapping at him until he stopped. “And now, to work on you.” She took a few steps back, a teasing tone to her voice.

“I’m perfect.” Morgan pointed his stick at her playfully as they walked toward the exit.

  “Not yet.”

“And…” He paused before sneering at her jersey. “Please, take that off.”

“Why?” She laughed. “I have to live up to Sam’s vision of me. Two Black Kats down, seventeen more to go.”

“I’ll give you seventeen.” He lunged at her, yelling “check!” as he slammed her into the wall. Gwen giggled as she tried to catch her breath, Morgan’s lips devouring the flesh of her neck.

Pulling away, she smiled at his cocky grin and his ice blue eyes. Everything was just how she wanted it. She and Morgan were going to be forever, and she couldn’t wait to spend the rest of her life with him. Even if he never did quite grow up.
