The Last Of The Rings Page 2

Nessa rushed to her sister’s side and turned her to face the floor as she pulled off the silver knife from her back. She took off her Trina’s coat and pulled up her top to have a clear view of the blades penetration. The blade had gone so deep inside her and she knew Trina wouldn’t heal with their regenerative powers.

She rubbed her ring around the wound and suddenly, the cut begun to patch up. In no time, Trina opened her eyes and coughed hard. Nessa embraced her and told her everything would be ok.

Trina couldn’t believe the turn of events within the past couple of hours.

“We have to leave now Trish, these vampires can still sense our presence. We have to get as far away as possible” Nessa stated.

  Chapter 3

When each of them had packed enough of what they’d need for their next town, Nessa turned on the ignition of their car and drove off.

“Have you told Thomas that we’re leaving?” Trina asked as she looked over at Nessa.

“I think it’s better this way, I’m sure he’d have caused a fuss over this and if I stay close to him then I’d only be endangering his life” Nessa stated as she fought to hide the hurt burning up in her heart to her eyes.

“You know he loves you right, and I think you at least owed him a goodbye” Trina stated.

Nessa knew too well that Thomas would have prodded to know why they were leaving, and there was no way she’d let him find out of her dark secret. Staying with him would only have made things worse because she wouldn’t forgive herself if anything happened to him, just the thought was too grim to contemplate. Leaving was the only way to keep him safe even though it hurt her like hell.

As they pulled up to a petrol station in Los Banos on the outskirts of Los Angeles, Trina got out of the car and stretched her muscles. Nessa headed to book a room where they’d spend the night and Trina went into the station’s store to get some snacks and drinks.

As she went through the shelves looking for what to buy, she noticed a lad eyeing her. He was on the opposite end of the shelf she was going through and he didn’t budge even when he noticed that she’d noticed him eyeing her. He smiled at her to reveal snow-white perfected teeth. His eyebrows were a thick brown like his hair which was a contrast to his deep blue eyes.

His mouth twitched with another smile playing at the corner of his mouth with curves on one side of his mouth. He was gorgeous. She smiled back and broke their stare as she walked on to the register with some snacks.

As she reached into her pockets to get the money, she felt someone tap her on the shoulder.

  “You’re new here right?”

  “Just passing through” she answered.

“I figured, since I’ve never seen you here before, I’m Jack” he said as he stretched out his hand for a shake.

“Trina, nice to meet you” she answered as she shook his hand and turned to pay for her snacks.

When she got her change back, she moved forward, out the stores door with one glance back at Jack when she reached the door. He was such a sight and she could look at him for an eternity if given a chance.

When she was out of the store, she saw Nessa talking on the telephone. Her expression portrayed that something wasn’t right. Her ear twitched and she felt a sharp pain in her head. Suddenly, she could hear Nessa’s conversation. Nessa was talking to someone she didn’t know. His voice sounded gruff and disturbed.

“We are on our way Marcus, thanks for the heads-up” Nessa said and hung up.

It was at that moment that Trina realized she had a gift to hear conversations from long distances. She walked towards Nessa and they went into a diner to have something to eat and discuss their next move.

“Who was on the phone Nessa, and why did he sound so gruff?” Trina asked.

“How do you know he sounded gruff?”

“I heard you, and a little bit of your conversation” Trina answered.

“You heard me, how?” Nessa asked with surprise as they settled in one table.

“I don’t know, I looked at you and noticed your worried expression, then I felt this short sharp pain in my head and I heard you talking with the gruff-voiced person on the other side of the phone” she explained.

“I guess you’ve now discovered your talent”

“I guess I have, now what was the conversation about?” Trina asked with unabashed interest.

“That was Marcus. He used to be mum and dad’s close friend, he’s been keeping an eye out for us, listening to word passing around about the Reigns. He’s just told me that we should stay put until he gets here, he’s going to help us figure everything out” Nessa explained.

“How long have you kept touch with him?” Trina inquired as a waiter came over to their table to get their order.

She brought them a milkshake each and left with a friendly smile.

“He always calls me from time to time, he never uses a particular line for security purposes and I can never call him, it’s been going on for years now, but there’s never been anything to worry about” Nessa explained.

Before Trina could utter a word, the diner’s door opened and Jack walked in, his gaze screening the diner to look for a seat.

“Where is she?” his mind wondered.

Trina almost spilled her milkshake when she heard his thoughts. This action brought attention to their table and Jack’s gaze interlocked with hers for a few seconds. He smiled with his charming smile and headed to a seat a few tables behind theirs.

“Are you ok, what just happened?” Nessa asked.

“I could read his thoughts” Trina answered grimly.

  “Read thoughts, whose?” Nessa wondered.

“The guy who just came in, I met him at the store earlier, and when he got in I could hear what his thought”

“Trish, I think you powers are becoming active and all almost at once, just make sure you take deep breaths when you feel any changes in your body. That helps balance your system and leaves you in control over them” Nessa advised.

“How many powers do you have Nessa?” Trina inquired sheepishly.

“Well, I know I can see the future and past events, I can run really fast and I can burn something if I concentrate on it”

“Burn things, are you serious, that’s pretty awesome how come you never told me this?” she asked with a jovial expression as she leaned forward and tapped her sister on the shoulder.

“Keep it down Trish, we don’t want to attract any attention to ourselves, we can never be sure who’s listening you know” Nessa warned.

As they continued to drink their milkshake, Nessa’s phone rang and she excused herself and headed out of the diner to answer it.

Jack took advantage of this opportunity and headed over to Trina’s table.

“Can I keep you company before your friend comes back?” he asked.

“Yeah sure, but I don’t think she’ll take long, she’s not only a friend, she’s my sister” Trina corrected.

“Ow, my bad” Jack said as he sat on the chair Nessa had been sitting on.

“So when are you guys moving on with your trip?” he asked trying to maintain a straight face.

All the while, Trina could read his thoughts and saw his concern on whether he was bothering her.

“I hope am not being intrusive….Trina?” he asked.

“No, you’re not, and you’re not bothering me either” Trina stated as she took another sip of her milkshake.

“Funny thing is, that’s exactly what I was thinking, did you just read my thoughts or something?” he asked with half shut eyes.

“What, read your thoughts, oh hell no, is that even possible?” Trina lied.

“So tell me about yourself, where are you from and where are you headed?” Jack inquired.

“Well, we’re coming from Los Angeles and this is some sort of a road trip, we’ll see where we end up” Trina answered as she grabbed a little of her brunette hair and rolled two of her fingers through it.

  As they chatted on, N
essa got concerned. Marcus had just told her that the Reign’s followers were all over and probably even among the people they were around at the moment. He warned Nessa to keep a low profile until he got to where they were and not to trust anyone.

As Nessa heard this, she looked through the window to see Trina getting acquainted with Jack and although she didn’t know for sure what his intentions were, she didn’t want to risk their safety.

She hung up and headed back to the diner.

“We have to go Trish” she said with a grim face.

  “Like right now?”

“This is Jack by the way” Trina said.

“It’s nice to meet you Jack” Nessa answered bluntly and stretched out her hand for a shake.

When Jack shook her hand, Nessa felt a cold chill run through her entire body. Looking down at Jack, she knew something about him wasn’t right. Jack smiled back at her not having a clue of what Nessa had just felt from his handshake.

“We have to go now Trish” Nessa repeated sternly and signaled Trina to get up from the table.

She placed twenty dollars on the table for their bill and they both walked out. Leaving Jack alone and clueless.

When they got to their room, Nessa locked it and secured it then rushed to her bag and went through it hurriedly.

“Ok, what’s going on Nessa, and what just happened at the diner when you shook Jack’s hand” Trina inquired.

“Something about him isn’t right Trish, I don’t know what it is but there’s something about him that just isn’t right” Nessa answered as she continued to search hurriedly in her bag.

“What the hell are you looking for Nessa?, you’re starting to make me nervous” Trina wondered.

Before she could answer, Nessa pulled out a small bottle with some light-brown powder substance in it. She headed to the door and poured the powder across at the door-way.

“What the hell is that Nessa?”

“This is garlic powder it helps keep vampires out”

“What do you mean Nessa, are they here, have they found us?” Trina asked hysterically.

“Calm down Trish, I promise you nothing’s going to happen to you, I’ll protect you even if it means I give up my life, just be careful and know that whatever happens, do not let anyone near your ring, you hear me?” Nessa warned with a stern face.

She continued to pour the garlic around their bed and on the window panes. It was almost nightfall and she knew the Reigns could only operate during the night since not all of them had the rings.

As they sat on the bed waiting for their Marcus, they heard the door knob turn. Trina jumped behind Nessa and waited in abated breath. Suddenly the air around them became unusually still.

“They are here” Nessa muttered in soft voice.

Trina held on her sister’s hand tightly and they waited.

A few seconds later, the doorbell rang and their hearts almost dropped to their stomachs.

  “Who is it” Nessa asked.

  “It’s Marcus honey, open up”

“Stay put Trish” Nessa said as she jumped over the circle of garlic she’d created around their bed.

The garlic powder was meant to protect and not harm any vampire who used it for protection. This therefore meant that an outsider wouldn’t get through or into the room unless there was a gap or break in the circle.

Nessa went to the window and peeped to see who it really was, only to see Marcus waiting nervously at the door. She headed to the door and leaned down brushing the garlic at the door aside then opened the door.

Before he could take a step in, three vampires jumped on him and pulled off his head. His headless body fell forward on Nessa and she fell on her back.

Trina screamed and curled up at the bed shocked at what had just happened. In a flash, the vampires were standing over Nessa with red burning eyes. They howled in loud deafening sounds and their nails grew inches longer, their fangs coming forth to reveal their real vampire look.

Nessa knew the only way she would protect herself was by getting inside the bed’s circle.

One vampire reached down and with extraordinary strength pulled Nessa from the floor and threw her to the ceiling. Nessa felt a sharp pain on her head as the hit the roof then fell back to the floor.

“Get the other one” one of the vampires ordered.

With half shut eyes, Nessa saw one of them head to the bed to get her sister, when he got at the edge, he was thrown aback by a strong wind and his feet caught fire.

“Damn bitches have used garlic” the vamp screamed as he struggled to put out the fire on his feet.

The head of the group looked at Nessa and walked towards her. He reached down for her and held her by the throat lifting her until her feet were inches from the ground.

“You will give us those damn rings right now” he said in a domineering voice. His fangs all out and his eyes red like fire.

“You will have to kill me first before I hand them to you” Nessa struggled to say as she choked from the vampires grip on her neck.

“That would be my pleasure” the vamp answered as he opened his mouth wider to take a bite at Nessa.

Trina screamed for him to stop but her protests fell on deaf ears. She didn’t know much about her kind but she knew that one way to kill a vampire was to get bit by another.

Just when the vampire holding Nessa was near her neck, she whispered into his ears.

“Open wide motherfucker” and she poured some greyish substance into his mouth.

The vamp threw her down and screamed in pain. His body burned like paper and in no time he turned into dust.

Nessa jumped into the garlic circle and on the bed to Trina.

“One way or another, we will get those rings, we are just going to give you some motivation, it’s only a matter of time” one of the vampires declared with a wink on one eye and a cynical smile playing at the corner of his mouth and then in a flash, they were gone.

Trina hugged Nessa and cried hysterically. Everything around her was changing at an alarming speed. First it was Maxwell and now an army of vampires after them. She wanted things to go back to the way they were.

“Why don’t we just give them the damn rings Nessa?, we can think of a way to survive daylight. I don’t think our lives are worth these stupid rings” Trina said when she could cry no more.

“There’s more to these rings than surviving daylight Trish, these rings have more power in them than any of us can even begin to imagine, and if we hand them to the Reigns, we can say goodbye to the mortal world, can you imagine, all the humans dead and nothing but fighting and submission to some selfish vampires?, our parents knew better, and that’s why they died defending these rings. We can’t let them down Trish, not now” Nessa explained.

“But what are we going to do now, the only person who would have explained everything is dead. Did you see how they killed him, they took of his head, and that is what is going to happen to us if we don’t give the rings back” Trina argued.

“We just need to keep moving Trish, we’ll be fine” Nessa stated as she got up from the bed and headed to shut the door.

“What will we do to his body?” Trina asked.

Without uttering a word, Nessa took out the bottle she’d used on the vampire and poured the silvery substance on Marcus’s body and head. It turned into dust and in no time, there was no sign of a body on the floor.

Trina’s shocked expression expressed all her questions and shock.

“This is liquid silver, just a drop and a vampire is turned to dust. Mum and dad gave it to me and they taught me how to use it” Nessa explained.

“When the first sign of daylight shows, we get back on the road” she continued as she tried to clear up the mess in the room then went to the bathroom.

Splashing some water on her face, she took deep breathes to help her get a grip of everything that had just happened. She only acted strong for Trina, and now that Marcus was dead, she had no idea what to do next. He was al
l she’d depended on, he was her advisor and her guide. Flashes of how his head was ripped off of his body played in her head and she burst out crying.

She wished her parents were still alive; there was so much she needed from them. She wasn’t ready for what was happening then and she had no one to guide her and let her know what to do.

As she sobbed, she felt a pair of warm hands on her shoulders. When she lifted her head, she saw Trina looking at her.
