Her mother grabbed her arm and said, “Let her be.”
“Like hell we will,” Sable said, heading in Brindle’s direction.
“Mom, she needs me,” Morgyn pleaded.
Their father stepped in front of Sable and shook his head. “I know you all want to be there for her, but she needs space. And from the look on Trace’s face, she isn’t going to get it anytime soon. I’m sure she’ll be at breakfast tomorrow, and we can talk with her then.”
Morgyn grabbed Graham’s hand, and he squeezed it.
“Aren’t you mad, Dad?” Pepper asked. “Your daughter just came home from Paris pregnant.”
Their parents exchanged a glance that spoke of years of experience navigating their children’s surprises and challenges.
“Mad? Why, because my daughter has hormones? Or because she might have fallen in love or made a mistake or a hundred other possibilities, some of which I’d rather not think about just yet? Brindle doesn’t need a father who’s angry because she got pregnant,” he said evenly. “She needs a family who realizes that not all pregnancies are planned and who will be there for her no matter what.”
“She obviously made her decision to keep this baby,” their mother said. “Now it’s up to us to welcome it into our family and to make sure Brindle knows how much we love her regardless of whatever is going through y’all’s minds right now. You think she’s full of piss and vinegar, but she’s human, like the rest of us, and beneath that tough exterior is a sensitive, loving girl. And right now I’d bet my bottom dollar she’s scared.”
“I’m still going to kick some French ass.” Sable strode away.
Axsel hugged Morgyn and said, “I’m not blowing you off. I’m glad you’re here and want to hear all about your elopement, but I think I’d better follow Sable so she doesn’t kill anyone wearing a beret.”
BRINDLE’S PREGNANCY AND Graham and Morgyn’s nuptials were the topics of conversation for the rest of the evening. By the time Graham and Morgyn headed home, Morgyn had snuck in a few texts to Brindle, who promised to talk with her tomorrow.
“Feel better knowing she’ll talk to you?” Graham asked as he pulled out of the parking lot.
“Much. But you know what? Now that the shock has worn off, I think my dad is right. Brin needs us to support her decision.” She sighed and leaned her head back against the headrest, closing her eyes. “Tonight was a night of surprises, wasn’t it?”
“Sure was, sunshine.”
Morgyn opened her eyes as they came to the light at the intersection by the theater. “You’re going the wrong way. Have you already forgotten how to get home?”
He grinned as he drove through the light and pulled over on the side of the road. Morgyn turned to look out the window and gasped. “What…?”
She fumbled with the door and ran out of the truck and down the hill.
Graham followed her, laughing as she stood before the caboose, which had been moved to the property beside the theater. It was freshly painted red with black railings. LIFE REIMAGINED was written on the side above the windows in bright yellow, with colorful flowers and stars around it. LOVINGLY ENHANCED TREASURES was written in white below the windows.
He put his arm around Morgyn and said, “Surprise, sunshine. This is your wedding present.”
“You bought it?” Tears streamed down her cheeks.
He unlocked the door, and as he followed her inside he said, “We bought it. We’re married. What’s mine is yours.”
“Oh my gosh. How did you get it here?”
“I couldn’t trust your sisters not to spill the beans, so I had Reed and Beckett give me a hand.” He’d made a deal with Reed to lease the property for the next ten years. Reed refused to take his money because they were family now, so Graham had made a hefty donation to the community theater project Grace was setting up.
“Graham,” Morgyn said through tears as she admired the newly renovated interior. “I don’t know what to say. This is so unexpected and unbelievably perfect.”
“Even though your consignment deals are doing well, I knew you still wished you had a space of your own. What better place than one that means so much to you? To us. I figured you could run it when we’re in town, making it extra special.”
“Like a grand opening between our travels?”
“Exactly.”
She was shivering with excitement. “Can you feel it? How right this is?” she asked as she swiped at her tears. She threw her arms around him and said, “I love you so much. Thank you.” She pressed her lips to his in a sweet kiss, and then she said, “I’m not great with words, but I’ll show you how thankful I am when we get home.”
He laced his left hand with hers and lifted it so the moonlight streaming through the window reflected off their newly cemented union and the charm bracelet he’d given her that she’d never taken off and said, “I’m already there, sunshine. You are my home.”
