  [14] And any affliction, but the affliction from them that hate me: and any revenge, but the revenge of enemies.

  [15] οὐκ ἔστι κεφαλὴ ὑπὲρ κεφαλὴν ὄφεως, καὶ οὐκ ἔστι θυμὸς ὑπὲρ θυμὸν ἐχθροῦ.

  [15] There is no head above the head of a serpent; and there is no wrath above the wrath of an enemy.

  [16] συνοικῆσαι λέοντι καὶ δράκοντι εὐδοκήσω ἢ ἐνοικῆσαι μετὰ γυναικὸς πονηρᾶς.

  [16] I had rather dwell with a lion and a dragon, than to keep house with a wicked woman.

  [17] πονηρία γυναικὸς ἀλλοιοῖ τὴν ὅρασιν αὐτῆς καὶ σκοτοῖ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτῆς ὡς ἄρκος.

  [17] The wickedness of a woman changeth her face, and darkeneth her countenance like sackcloth.

  [18] ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ πλησίον αὐτοῦ ἀναπεσεῖται ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀκούσας ἀνεστέναξε πικρά.

  [18] Her husband shall sit among his neighbours; and when he heareth it shall sigh bitterly.

  [19] μικρὰ πᾶσα κακία πρὸς κακίαν γυναικός, κλῆρος ἁμαρτωλοῦ ἐπιπέσοι αὐτῇ.

  [19] All wickedness is but little to the wickedness of a woman: let the portion of a sinner fall upon her.

  [20] ἀνάβασις ἀμμώδης ἐν ποσὶ πρεσβυτέρου, οὕτως γυνὴ γλωσσώδης ἀνδρὶ ἡσύχῳ.

  [20] As the climbing up a sandy way is to the feet of the aged, so is a wife full of words to a quiet man.

  [21] μὴ προσπέσῃς ἐπὶ κάλλος γυναικὸς καὶ γυναῖκα μὴ ἐπιποθήσῃς.

  [21] Stumble not at the beauty of a woman, and desire her not for pleasure.

  [22] ὀργὴ καὶ ἀναίδεια καὶ αἰσχύνη μεγάλη γυνὴ ἐὰν ἐπιχορηγῇ τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς.

  [22] A woman, if she maintain her husband, is full of anger, impudence, and much reproach.

  [23] καρδία ταπεινὴ καὶ πρόσωπον σκυθρωπὸν καὶ πληγὴ καρδίας γυνὴ πονηρά· χεῖρες παρειμέναι καὶ γόνατα παραλελυμένα ἥτις οὐ μακαριεῖ τὸν ἄνδρα αὐτῆς.

  [23] A dejected heart and a sullen face and a wound of the heart is a wicked wife; slack hands and weakened knees are from a woman who does not make her husband happy.

  [24] ἀπὸ γυναικὸς ἀρχὴ ἁμαρτίας, καὶ δι᾿ αὐτὴν ἀποθνήσκομεν πάντες.

  [24] Of the woman came the beginning of sin, and through her we all die.

  [25] μὴ δῷς ὕδατι διέξοδον μηδὲ γυναικὶ πονηρᾷ ἐξουσίαν.

  [25] Give the water no passage; neither power to a wicked woman.

  [26] εἰ μὴ πορεύεται κατὰ χεῖρά σου, ἀπὸ τῶν σαρκῶν σου ἀπότεμε αὐτήν.

  [26] If she go not as thou wouldest have her, cut her off from thy flesh.

  CHAPTER 26

  ΓΥΝΑΙΚΟΣ ἀγαθῆς μακάριος ὁ ἀνήρ, καὶ ἀριθμὸς τῶν ἡμερῶν αὐτοῦ διπλάσιος.

  Blessed is the man that hath a virtuous wife, for the number of his days shall be double.

  [2] γυνὴ ἀνδρεία εὐφραίνει τὸν ἄνδρα αὐτῆς, καὶ τὰ ἔτη αὐτοῦ πληρώσει ἐν εἰρήνῃ.

  [2] A virtuous woman rejoiceth her husband, and he shall fulfil the years of his life in peace.

  [3] γυνὴ ἀγαθὴ μερὶς ἀγαθή, ἐν μερίδι φοβουμένων Κύριον δοθήσεται.

  [3] A good wife is a good portion, which shall be given in the portion of them that fear the Lord.

  [4] πλουσίου δὲ καὶ πτωχοῦ καρδία ἀγαθή, ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ πρόσωπον ἱλαρόν.

  [4] Whether rich or poor, if he have a good heart, he shall at all times have a cheerful countenance.

  [5] ἀπὸ τριῶν εὐλαβήθη ἡ καρδία μου, καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ τετάρτῳ προσώπῳ ἐδεήθην· διαβολὴν πόλεως, καὶ ἐκκλησίαν ὄχλου, καὶ καταψευσμόν, ὑπὲρ θάνατον πάντα μοχθηρά.

  [5] There be three things that mine heart feareth; and for the fourth I was sore afraid: the slander of a city, the gathering together of an unruly multitude, and a false accusation: all these are worse than death.

  [6] ἄλγος καρδίας καὶ πένθος γυνὴ ἀντίζηλος ἐπὶ γυναικὶ καὶ μάστιξ γλώσσης πᾶσιν ἐπικοινωνοῦσα.

  [6] But a grief of heart and sorrow is a woman that is jealous over another woman, and a scourge of the tongue which communicateth with all.

  [7] βοοζύγιον σαλευόμενον γυνὴ πονηρά, ὁ κρατῶν αὐτῆς ὡς ὁ δρασσόμενος σκορπίου.

  [7] An evil wife is a yoke shaken to and fro: he that hath hold of her is as though he held a scorpion.

  [8] ὀργὴ μεγάλη γυνὴ μέθυσος καὶ ἀσχημοσύνην αὐτῆς οὐ συγκαλύψει.

  [8] A great wrath is a drunken wife, and her shameful conduct she will not hide.

  [9] πορνεία γυναικὸς ἐν μετεωρισμοῖς ὀφθαλμῶν καὶ ἐν τοῖς βλεφάροις αὐτῆς γνωσθήσεται.

  [9] The whoredom of a woman may be known in her haughty looks and eyelids.

  [10] ἐπὶ θυγατρὶ ἀδιατρέπτῳ στερέωσον φυλακήν, ἵνα μὴ εὑροῦσα ἄνεσιν ἑαυτῇ χρήσηται.

  [10] If thy daughter be shameless, keep her in straitly, lest she abuse herself through overmuch liberty.

  [11] ὀπίσω ἀναιδοῦς ὀφθαλμοῦ φύλαξαι, καὶ μὴ θαυμάσῃς ἐὰν εἰς σὲ πλημμελήσῃ·

  [11] Watch over an impudent eye: and marvel not if she trespass against thee.

  [12] ὡς διψῶν ὁδοιπόρος τὸ στόμα ἀνοίξει, καὶ ἀπὸ παντὸς ὕδατος τοῦ σύνεγγυς πίεται, κατέναντι παντὸς πασσάλου καθήσεται καὶ ἔναντι βέλους ἀνοίξει φαρέτραν.

  [12] As a traveller is thirsty, she will open her mouth and will drink from any water that is near; she will sit upon every stake and she will open her quiver to every arrow.

  [13] χάρις γυναικὸς τέρψει τὸν ἄνδρα αὐτῆς, καὶ τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτοῦ πιανεῖ ἡ ἐπιστήμη αὐτῆς.

  [13] The grace of a wife delighteth her husband, and her skill will fatten his bones.

  [14] δόσις Κυρίου γυνὴ σιγηρά, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀντάλλαγμα πεπαιδευμένης ψυχῆς.

  [14] A silent woman is a gift of the Lord; and there is nothing so much worth as a mind well instructed.

  [15] χάρις ἐπὶ χάριτι γυνὴ αἰσχυντηρά, καὶ οὐκ ἔστι σταθμὸς πᾶς ἄξιος ἐγκρατοῦς ψυχῆς.

  [15] Grace upon grace is a modest wife, and there is no standard weight good enough for a self-controlled soul.

  [16] ἥλιος ἀνατέλλων ἐν ὑψίστοις Κυρίου καὶ κάλλος ἀγαθῆς γυναικὸς ἐν κόσμῳ οἰκίας αὐτῆς.

  [16] As the sun rises in the heights of the Lord, so also a good wife’s beauty is an ornament of her home.

  [17] λύχνος ἐκλάμπων ἐπὶ λυχνίας ἁγίας κα�
�� κάλλος προσώπου ἐπὶ ἡλικίᾳ στασίμῃ.

  [17] As the clear light is upon the holy candlestick; so is the beauty of the face in ripe age.

  [18] στύλοι χρύσεοι ἐπὶ βάσεως ἀργυρᾶς καὶ πόδες ὡραῖοι ἐπὶ στέρνοις εὐσταθοῦς.

  [18] As the golden pillars are upon the sockets of silver; so are the fair feet with a constant heart.

  [19] Τέκνον, ἀκμὴν ἡλικίας σου συντήρησον ὑγιῆ, καὶ μὴ δῷς ἀλλοτρίοις τὴν ἰσχύν σου.

  [19] My son, keep the flower of thine age sound; and give not thy strength to strangers.

  [20] ἀναζητήσας παντὸς πεδίου εὔγειον κλῆρον σπεῖρε τὰ ἴδια σπέρματα πεποιθὼς τῇ εὐγενείᾳ σου·

  [20] When thou hast sought out a fertile plot of an entire plain, sow thine own seed confident in thine excellent descent.

  [21] οὕτως τὰ γενήματά σου περιόντα καὶ παρρησίαν εὐγενείας ἔχοντα μεγαλυνοῦσι.

  [21] So thy race which thou leavest shall be magnified, having the confidence of their good descent.

  [22] γυνὴ μισθία ἴση σιάλῳ λογισθήσεται, ὕπανδρος δὲ πύργος θανάτου τοῖς χρωμένοις λογισθήσεται.

  [22] An harlot shall be accounted as spittle; but a married woman is a tower against death to her husband.

  [23] γυνὴ ἀσεβὴς ἀνόμῳ μερὶς δοθήσεται, εὐσεβὴς δὲ δίδοται τῷ φοβουμένῳ τὸν Κύριον.

  [23] A wicked woman is given as a portion to a wicked man: but a godly woman is given to him that feareth the Lord.

  [24] γυνὴ ἀσχήμων ἀτιμίαν κατατρίψει, θυγάτηρ δὲ εὐσχήμων καὶ τὸν ἄνδρα ἐντραπήσεται.

  [24] A shameless woman will exhaust dishonor, but a decorous daughter will revere even her husband.

  [25] γυνὴ ἀδιάτρεπτος ὡς κύων λογισθήσεται, ἡ δὲ ἔχουσα αἰσχύνην τὸν Κύριον φοβηθήσεται.

  [25] A shameless woman shall be counted as a dog; but she that is shamefaced will fear the Lord.

  [26] γυνὴ ἄνδρα ἴδιον τιμῶσα σοφὴ πᾶσι φανήσεται, ἀτιμάζουσα δὲ ἐν ὑπερηφανίᾳ ἀσεβὴς πᾶσι γνωσθήσεται. γυναικὸς ἀγαθῆς μακάριος ὁ ἀνήρ, ὁ γὰρ ἀριθμὸς τῶν ἐτῶν αὐτοῦ διπλάσιος ἔσται.

  [26] A woman who honours her own husband will appear wise to everyone, but she who dishonours him with arrogance will be known to all as impious. Happy is the husband of a good wife, for the number of his years will be double.

  [27] γυνὴ μεγαλόφωνος καὶ γλωσσώδης ὡς σάλπιγξ πολέμων εἰς τροπὴν θεωρηθήσεται, ἀνθρώπου δὲ παντὸς ψυχὴ ὁμοιότροπος τούτοις, πολέμου ἀκαταστασίαις τὴν ψυχὴν διαιτηθήσεται.

  [27] A loud-mouthed and talkative wife like a trumpet of war will observe a rout, and the soul of any person who lives in a manner like these will lead his life in the confusions of war.

  [28] ᾿Επὶ δυσὶ λελύπηται ἡ καρδία μου, καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ τρίτῳ θυμός μοι ἐπῆλθεν· ἀνὴρ πολεμιστὴς ὑστερῶν δι᾿ ἔνδειαν, καὶ ἄνδρες συνετοὶ ἐὰν σκυβαλισθῶσιν, ἐπανάγων ἀπὸ δικαιοσύνης ἐπὶ ἁμαρτίαν· ὁ Κύριος ἑτοιμάσει εἰς ρομφαίαν αὐτόν.

  [28] There be two things that grieve my heart; and the third maketh me angry: a man of war that suffereth poverty; and men of understanding that are not set by; and one that returneth from righteousness to sin; the Lord prepareth such an one for the sword.

  [29] Μόλις ἐξελεῖται ἔμπορος ἀπὸ πλημμελείας, καὶ οὐ δικαιωθήσεται κάπηλος ἀπὸ ἁμαρτίας.

  [29] A merchant shall hardly keep himself from doing wrong; and an huckster shall not be freed from sin.

  CHAPTER 27

  ΧΑΡΙΝ διαφόρου πολλοὶ ἥμαρτον, καὶ ὁ ζητῶν πληθῦναι ἀποστρέψει ὀφθαλμόν.

  Many have sinned for a small matter; and he that seeketh for abundance will turn his eyes away.

  [2] ἀναμέσον ἁρμῶν λίθων παγήσεται πάσσαλος, καὶ ἀναμέσον πράσεως καὶ ἀγορασμοῦ συντριβήσεται ἁμαρτία.

  [2] Between joints of stones a peg will be driven, and between selling and buying sin will be wedged.

  [3] ἐὰν μὴ ἐν φόβῳ Κυρίου κρατήσῃ κατὰ σπουδήν, ἐν τάχει καταστραφήσεται αὐτοῦ ὁ οἶκος.

  [3] Unless a man hold himself diligently in the fear of the Lord, his house shall soon be overthrown.

  [4] ᾿Εν σείσματι κοσκίνου διαμένει κοπρία, οὕτως σκύβαλα ἀνθρώπου ἐν λογισμῷ αὐτοῦ.

  [4] As when one sifteth with a sieve, the refuse remaineth; so the filth of man in his talk.

  [5] σκεύη κεραμέως δοκιμάζει κάμινος, καὶ πειρασμὸς ἀνθρώπου ἐν διαλογισμῷ αὐτοῦ.

  [5] The furnace proveth the potter’s vessels; so the trial of man is in his reasoning.

  [6] γεώργιον ξύλου ἐκφαίνει ὁ καρπὸς αὐτοῦ, οὕτως λόγος ἐνθυμήματος καρδίας ἀνθρώπου.

  [6] The fruit declareth if the tree have been dressed; so is the utterance of a conceit in the heart of man.

  [7] πρὸ λογισμοῦ μὴ ἐπαινέσῃς ἄνδρα, οὗτος γὰρ πειρασμὸς ἀνθρώπων.

  [7] Praise no man before thou hearest him speak; for this is the trial of men.

  [8] ᾿Εὰν διώκῃς τὸ δίκαιον, καταλήψῃ καὶ ἐνδύσῃ αὐτὸ ὡς ποδήρη δόξης.

  [8] If thou followest righteousness, thou shalt obtain her, and put her on, as a glorious long robe.

  [9] πετεινὰ πρὸς τὰ ὅμοια αὐτοῖς καταλύσει, καὶ ἀλήθεια πρὸς τοὺς ἐργαζομένους αὐτὴν ἐπανήξει.

  [9] The birds will resort unto their like; so will truth return unto them that practise in her.

  [10] λέων θήραν ἐνεδρεύει, οὕτως ἁμαρτίαι ἐργαζομένους ἄδικα.

  [10] As the lion lieth in wait for the prey; so sin for them that work iniquity.

  [11] διήγησις εὐσεβοῦς διαπαντὸς σοφία, ὁ δὲ ἄφρων ὡς σελήνη ἀλλοιοῦται.

  [11] The discourse of a godly man is always with wisdom; but a fool changeth as the moon.

  [12] εἰς μέσον ἀσυνέτων συντήρησον καιρόν, εἰς μέσον δὲ διανοουμένων ἐνδελέχιζε.

  [12] If thou be among the indiscreet, observe the time; but be continually among men of understanding.

  [13] διήγησις μωρῶν προσόχθισμα, καὶ ὁ γέλως αὐτῶν ἐν σπατάλῃ ἁμαρτίας.

  [13] The discourse of fools is irksome, and their sport is the wantonness of sin.

  [14] λαλιὰ πολυόρκου ὀρθώσει τρίχας, καὶ ἡ μάχη αὐτῶν ἐμφραγμὸς ὠτίων.

  [14] The talk of him that sweareth much maketh the hair stand upright; and their
brawls make one stop his ears.

  [15] ἔκχυσις αἵματος μάχη ὑπερηφάνων, καὶ ἡ διαλοιδόρησις αὐτῶν ἀκοὴ μοχθηρά.

  [15] The strife of the proud is bloodshedding, and their revilings are grievous to the ear.

  [16] ῾Ο ἀποκαλύπτων μυστήρια ἀπώλεσε πίστιν, καὶ οὐ μὴ εὕρῃ φίλον πρὸς τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ.

  [16] Whoso discovereth secrets loseth his credit; and shall never find friend to his mind.

  [17] στέρξον φίλον καὶ πιστώθητι μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ· ἐὰν δὲ ἀποκαλύψῃς τὰ μυστήρια αὐτοῦ, οὐ μὴ καταδιώξῃς ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ.

  [17] Love thy friend, and be faithful unto him: but if thou betrayest his secrets, follow no more after him.

  [18] καθὼς γὰρ ἀπώλεσεν ἄνθρωπος τὸν ἐχθρὸν αὐτοῦ, οὕτως ἀπώλεσας τὴν φιλίαν τοῦ πλησίον·

  [18] For as a man hath destroyed his enemy; so hast thou lost the love of thy neighbour.

  [19] καὶ ὡς πετεινὸν ἐκ χειρός σου ἀπέλυσας, οὕτως ἀφῆκας τὸν πλησίον καὶ οὐ θηρεύσεις αὐτόν.

  [19] As one that letteth a bird go out of his hand, so hast thou let thy neighbour go, and shalt not get him again.

  [20] μὴ αὐτὸν διώξῃς, ὅτι μακρὰν ἀπέστη καὶ ἐξέφυγεν ὡς δορκὰς ἐκ παγίδος.

  [20] Follow after him no more, for he is too far off; he is as a roe escaped out of the snare.

  [21] ὅτι τραῦμά ἐστι καταδῆσαι καὶ λοιδορίας ἐστὶ διαλλαγή, ὁ δὲ ἀποκαλύψας μυστήρια ἀπήλπισεν.

  [21] As for a wound, it may be bound up; and after reviling there may be reconcilement: but he that betrayeth secrets is without hope.

  [22] Διανεύων ὀφθαλμῷ τεκταίνει κακά, καὶ οὐδεὶς αὐτὸν ἀποστήσει ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ·
