I looked at myself in the rear view mirror and almost didn’t recognize the eyes looking back at me. For a moment I was half convinced there was a stranger behind the wheel and I was lost somewhere dark and expansive.
The moment passed as a car drove by, its lights swinging across the darkness, cutting into the cab of my car, illuminating me in the mirror.
And there I was again.
Cold, calculating, handsome and me.
I started the car, hit the gas and cruised out into the night.
I headed right for my favorite hunting ground, the back streets off the main boulevards, where the girls walked, looking for tricks to pay their habits. The girls who nobody would notice when they went missing, the girls nobody cared enough about to let them walk the main streets in the safety of the bright lights.
I drove slowly looking at the women here and there, but none of them struck my fancy.
I was about to give up for the night when I saw a wisp of a thing alone at the end of the street. She was thin, blonde, huddled around herself, and shaking with need.
I had a kill kit in the back of the car and knew several locations I could take her to play. I was set to release the buildup of red rage behind my eyes.
She glanced at the car when I pulled up, her eyes widened and I let the window slide down so she could lean in and talk.
She rested her elbows on the edge of the window, stuck her head into the passenger side and asked, “What are you looking for tonight, baby?”
I flashed her a sexy smile, saw her visibly relax when she realized I was a good looking man, and said, “Why, I was looking for you, kitten. Why don’t you get in?”
