"This reminds me of the undead plague in Blood and Pride," Jen said firing at another zombie.

  "Crazy, huh?" He asked.

"There were so many undead we ran out of bullets." She said aiming at a grandmother. The old lady pushed a walker ahead of her and shuffling forward. As she got closer she smelled of a cross between a retirement center and mortuary. She grinned at them in a toothless smile.

"What did you use?" He asked trying to breathe through his mouth.

"Silver swords mostly," Jen said with a wistful smile. She fired once more, "The fledglings we gave Molotov's too, but that was a mistake. They ended up burning several blocks to the ground."

  "Sounds fun."

"It was intense, and the only time all the factions came together," Jennifer retorted, firing again. Charlie barely managed to load the magazine before Jen grabbed it from him. Sixty zombies were in the alley getting uncomfortably close. Jen missed and tried for a quick follow up, before emptying the weapon into the approaching undead. Eight disappeared before she dropped the mag, and held out a hand nervously. Charlie finished loading and put it in her palm.

She slotted it into the gun and fired at a zombie grabbing her. The undead disintegrated as she panned to the next target. Charlie thought she was doing well, but maybe it was just because she'd fought zombies before. He loaded more bullets as Jen fired at a trio of Japanese businessmen. The first vanished, but the other two tackled her, and Jen cried out falling over. She pushed the gun into its fetid mouth and fired. Twinkling lights showered over her as the third zombie bit her gun arm. A big red mark appeared on her forearm, and the simulation froze. The undead horde slid into complete stillness, then after a few seconds vanished.

"Good job," Charlie said putting a fully loaded mag on the dumpster. "Again, or do you want a break?" He asked.

Jennifer stood shakily and examined her arm. The red bite mark was already fading. "That didn't hurt as much as Yohan," Jennifer said rubbing the spot.

"Tolerances are higher with the weapons because we contract with them. Personally, I think it's to discourage that method." Charlie said with a shrug. Jennifer reloaded her USP and nodded to him. He moved to the nearby console and activated the same scenario. Ten zombies started to shuffle into the alley.

"This would honestly be easier if you had more mags, but we'll make it work," he admitted picking up her spare.

Charlie opened up another box of ammo so the bullets would be easily accessible. Jennifer waited until they were ten feet away before she fired. The first zombie fell in a single shot.

Things continued like that for a while. He loaded while she killed zombies as efficiently as possible. Jennifer died five times over the next two hours. She also put nine hundred rounds down range, which was impressive.

"I need a break," Jen said climbing back to her feet. The last zombie had bitten her right on the boob, and she rubbed the red mark in annoyance.

"Me too," he admitted holding out the last box of ammo. Jen took it and pushed the box into her tunic pocket. They left the simulation range and found a seat at the nearby benches.

Charlie logged out, then quickly opened a nearby bottle of sports drink. He guzzled half of it, then used the head, and returned to the living room chair. The dive helmet was damp as he tugged it back over his head. He brushed the hair out of his eyes and activated the gear.

"That is not something a young lady should be doing," Montgomery said from nearby. Charlie's view was dominated by the sight of a felt tip marker in his face. Remy was straddling his lap, but looking at the Confederate.

"What's a little dick between friends?" She said sticking her tongue out.

"You have absolutely no boundaries, do you?" The older man asked.

"Nope," the girl chirped. She turned back ready to begin her phallic masterpiece.

Charlie reached up grabbing her thin wrist and said, "I would appreciate it, if you kept your dick to yourself."

"Oh pooh, he's back, and I didn't get to draw anything." Remy pouted sliding from his lap.

"I tried to stop her," Monty offered. Charlie glanced at the teal haired girl as she innocently capped the marker and put it back into her elementary school bag.

"I'm more surprised you two are together," Charlie admitted.

"We saw you were online, but you didn't accept our calls. We figured you were in a match and came down here." Remy said tugging the teddy bear bag back on.

"I was helping a friend run some training scenarios," Charlie said gesturing to the woman next to him.

"The coworker you had the hots for?" Remy asked stepping closer to Jennifer.

"Remy…" Charlie growled dangerously as the young girl climbed onto her lap.

"I put my pen away," she said with a smile. The blonde in question blinked and straightened. "Welcome back," Remy squealed hugging the woman.

  "Umm…" Jennifer said in confusion.

"These are the friends I told you about. The gender confused school girl in your lap is Remy. You met her once before.” At hearing the gender confused part Jennifer shoved the girl off.

"Ooof, meanie," Remy said standing. She brushed her skirt non-plussed and sat down on the bench next to Jen.

“The gentleman is Montgomery Cunningham the Twenty-Second." Charlie said gesturing to the older individual.

He stepped forward and lightly took Jennifer's hand, brought it to his mustached lips, and kissed the back of it. "It is a pleasure to meet you, madam. I take it from the conversation that you are a friend?"

"We work together, yes," Jennifer said looking at the man holding her palm hostage.

"What happens now?" She asked taking back her arm gently.

"You could try a competition match and put your recent training to the test," Charlie suggested.

  "Sure, but you can't join?"

"We are in the Silver Division. If you grouped with us you'd be stuck in a match without a primary weapon. That would not be any fun, but we could watch your game." They moved up the spiral stairs. Jen found an open console, activated it, and searched for match options.

"Please enter lobby 214," The console chirped. Jennifer walked to the elevators, while the trio went toward the bar. Charlie picked an empty game booth and called up the match number.

"The girl looked nervous," Montgomery said taking a seat next to him.

"Jen is odd like that. She shakes like a leaf, but there comes a point where she goes completely still. We'll see how she handles herself." Charlie replied activating the screen. He finally found the lobby number, and the screen flicked to life displaying a nighttime scene. Remy slid into the seat after ordering a large chocolate sundae. She took a bite then glanced up.

"Total darkness, that blows for the newbie," Remy said taking another bite.

"It may help," Charlie said. The dim setting, might hopefully, help Jennifer channel her inner vampire.

Charlie switched player camera’s until he found her standing in the shambles of a hotel lounge. The half circular room was partly filled with old couches facing a stone fireplace. It must have been abandoned because graffiti liberally covered the walls, and trash filled the once majestic fireplace. Jen drew her weapon and put herself next to the only exit from the room.

"I spoke to your… ‘other' friend by the way. He's a persuasive young man." Monty whispered.

"Oh, Alex? So you're going?" Charlie asked glancing at the older man as he ran a hand along the wooden stock of the rifle.

"I still have a passport, barely within its expiration date, but it’s valid. After organizing my finances, I should be leaving the country here soon." Montgomery said in a tone that was almost sad.

"I'm glad to hear it, and I hope it works out," Charlie admitted.

On the television screen, Jennifer slowly opened the door into the next room. She didn't enter though, that would frame her against the lounge windows. Her stealth skills in ‘Blood and Pride’ were at least proving useful. After a few minutes a cloud passed by sending the parlor into darkness. Jen use
d the chance to crawl through the door, which turned out to be a billiard room connected to a cocktail bar. The furniture had been shoved against the exit. However, a door was already ajar within the bar area, but someone was crouched behind the dilapidated counter.

Nothing happened for several minutes, then Jen stood and advanced with her pistol pointed ahead of her. She fired as a girl stood from behind the bar. The 9mm barked filling the room with a deafening noise, and the mirror shattered, but the girl flinched back behind the counter. Jen cursed, firing wildly as she ran sideways toward the exit. She threw herself through the open door into the hallway, and fired the rest of her clip back into the room.

"I would’ve just shot through the wood. I mean come on, that stuff has to be like eighty years old." Remy said kicking her feet under the table.

"Having an enemy at my back wouldn't be my first choice either," Montgomery added watching the action.

Jennifer’s fingers fumbled with the magazine as she jammed it into the gun. Quickly she opened the nearby door which led to an indoor swimming pool, and crab walked inside. The pool had been mostly drained, and graffiti covered the walls. Several broken lawn chairs huddled like hobos around a rusted out burn barrel. Jen crouched low in the darkness and snaked her way to the south side.

If she was interested in hiding, it was not the best choice. Most of the large bay windows were broken, and what little moonlight there was filtered in through that side. Jen crouched behind a pillar and waited. The woman from before came after, and scanned the poolside deck before pointing her weapon at the changing rooms. Slowly she crept through the shadows in that direction.

Jen half stepped from cover and fired several times. The girl was knocked sideways by the first bullet, and tried to return fire, but Jen's follow up shots punched into her chest and stomach. She collapsed in a heap next to the changing area. High above a buzzer went off signifying half the round was over. Jennifer ducked back behind cover, but she didn't attempt to load her magazine. In the gloom she sat, and listened.

"The pool is probably the endpoint. It's at the center of the hotel." Remy said, and Monty nodded. That meant the other players would be quickly filling the open room. It didn't look good for her, especially with a handful of rounds left.

Jennifer holstered her pistol and hugged the pillar. She jumped a few feet up and used her feet to brace herself. Then she let go with one hand. Her weight shifted and she began working her way up the column. There was a scrape of boot on tile as a man entered the swimming pool and Jennifer froze. He quickly crouched next to the door and scanned the room while she hung in the air. A second person crept into the pool area from the sauna, and the two players opened fire on one another. In the dark, each brilliant flash illuminated the pool room for a brief microsecond.

Jen started up the pillar again. From a side door, a gray wrapped bundle of frayed cloth rushed inside completely ignoring the gun battle. He raced forward across the slimy tiles, and landed with a splash in the scummy knee-high water. A fifth player jumped in through the broken windows right below Jennifer. The man leaned out around the pillar and joined in the rolling gun battle. Gritting her teeth she inched slowly upward, and finally reaching the rafters. Then swung her body forward and hooked her legs around the thick wooden beam.

Bullets ricocheted off the pillar as two players returned fire, but Jen was shadowed in darkness within the eve of the rafters. The three players had each commandeered a pillar for cover, but that wouldn't last forever. The red circle was closing in around the pool. In the murky water, the fourth man withdrew a large two-handed sword, and took a defensive stance. Jen wormed her way along the old wooden beam.

The farthest player from the pool made a dash for the sunken pit. He dodged left around his protective pillar and sprinted across the tiles. A bullet slammed into his jaw spinning his head around. A second bullet nicked his spinal cord, and his legs went limp. He landed hard on his side and dropped his pistol, which skidded the rest of the way into the dark water. Then as the red circle closed in both players stepped from cover. Pistols flashed as they fired at one another, and the first girl slumped as a bullet punched into her chest. She sagged to her knees still trying to return fire. The unexpectedly heavy gun began to lower, and she sent rounds into the tiles next to her. The second player rushed forward and jumped into the darkened pool. The swordsman below turned and swung his massive blade. There was a quick flash of steel and it cut the player in half.

Jen locked her legs around the wooden beam and reached for her pistol, but she fumbled the gun. It dropped into the water below, and the man spun slashing his weapon. With dawning realization, he started to look up as Jen fell onto the tall swordsman.

She landed heavily on him and wrapped her legs around his neck as they fell into the water. She quickly grabbed the wrist holding the longsword and pinned it to her chest. Then twisted her hips forcing the man's face under the knee-high water. He struggled to pull one of his arms free, but in response, Jen squeezed her thighs together as hard as she could. Bubbles filled the water. A meaty hand shot out of the muck and grabbed her throat in return, but she refused to let go. Slowly the bubbles stopped, and darkness settled in.

"I think you are correct. That girl has two distinct natures to her. A soft and pliable outer coating, but inside she is hard as diamond." Montgomery said in an impressed voice.

"I agree about the soft outer coating. I'd love to be squeezed between those thighs," Remy said and Charlie glared at her. She innocently smiled and climbed from the booth.

They stood and left the bar. Jen was just stepping out of the elevators, and a massive bald man was thrusting his contact information into her palm. Jen had a genuinely confused look on her face but accepted the piece of paper. He turned and fled with gray tattered robes fluttering.

"Congratulations!" Charlie shouted and Monty and Remy joined in.

"Quit teasing me," she said trying to vainly keep from blushing.

"We're not teasing you girl, that was good work," Remy said in a high pitched and awed voice.

"You just made eleven grand in twenty minutes, which is pretty amazing. I told you credits are easy to get."

"I think I'm done for tonight. My nerves are shot." She admitted, and Charlie nodded. He'd only played one game during his first day.

"I'd advise stopping over at the mall to pick up a gun cleaning kit. Your pistol will be slimy from falling into the pool, and you put a thousand rounds through him, so he'll need it. If you've never done it before, there are some guides you can check out."

"I can do that, and thank you for your help today. I appreciate everything."

"I do hope to convert you," Charlie admitted as she pulled away. Jen's smile was small, but he thought it spoke volumes.

"Have a good evening," She said walking away.

"Shall we have a match?" Montgomery suggested.

"That's an excellent idea," Charlie agreed following the older man to a console. The three signed up for a team deathmatch.

  CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

  Crazy Girls...

Fear and adrenaline coursed through his veins in a gut-clenching, addictive cocktail. Charlie swore to himself he wasn't a junkie, but here he was—playing one more match. Charlie slid to a stop putting his back to a tree. He panted sucking in the sticky air and nervously waited for his stamina to replenish. His heart rate was sky high, and Charlie desperately needed to pee. He closed his eyes. In an effort to calm himself he took several long breaths, and the pounding in his chest abated, but he couldn't relieve his bladder. At least, not until this was over.

The steamy Alabama countryside he was running through would have been pretty with its bright flowers and multi-colored birds if five people weren't trying to kill him. He turned the rifle in his hands and activated the magazine release. The box slid free into his waiting palm. A small plastic window on the side revealed it was empty of cartridges.

"Just great," he thought dropping the mag and patted his vest for another.
Again he came up empty and sighed.

Monty was busy setting up the trap, but Charlie had to keep ahead of his pursuers. The rifle was out of ammo and dead weight at the moment. Dropping it would mean he could run for extended periods, so with a pang of regret, he set the empty weapon against the tree. When his stamina pool filled, he stood and started jogging towards the ambush point. As soon as he crossed a ditch, the sound of running water attracted his attention.

"It would be easier to move down a river bank than through a thick forest." With that thought, Charlie picked up his pace, and started sprinting toward the sound. Hopefully, it would be heading in the right direction.

He came out of the trees at the top of a waterfall. The stream was small but fast moving as it poured over the rocks, and dropped fifty feet to a boulder filled bottom. Bass leaped from the water amid the rapids. Unfortunately, the river's path turned south instead of west. Still, this was an opportunity to put an obstacle between himself and his pursuers. Charlie jumped from one slime covered rock to the next. He almost slipped on the last wet boulder but threw himself to the far shore.
