Time Crunch

  He felt terrible about the men they’d lost—

  Captain King.

  Zadina.

  Rivers.

  Bridger …

  —and knew he’d do whatever he could for their families.

  But he also realized he’d just survived the experience of a lifetime. An experience he’d never match or duplicate. The most fantastic adventure he’d ever have. He felt a moment of intense melancholy: the idea that the most exciting event of his entire life was suddenly over with was … sad.

  Sad and depressing.

  But no, he thought, with instant resolve. There’s gotta be a way to top this. To live an adventure even more exciting! And whatever it is, I’m gonna find it …

  He glanced at Zach—his friend’s nose was mashed tight against his own window, his leg forgotten—then at Smith and Treeck. Smith was consulting some sort of tablet—

  Already planning his next mission!

  —while Treeck relaxed in his seat, lost in a morphine-induced haze.

  “You know what?” Chase asked abruptly.

  Treeck opened an eye as Zach and Smith turned to look at him.

  “Don’t know ’bout you guys, but I had a good time.” He shrugged. “What do you wanna do next week?”

  There was a moment of startled silence. Zach paled, but Smith and Treeck suddenly began laughing out loud, Smith holding a hand over his belly and Treeck laughing so hard he actually began to choke, forcing Chase to thump him on the back.

  Chase grinned as he listened to the laughs, thinking: Oh, yeah … got ’em both!

  SHANE BARKER is the author of several books for young adults, including Time Snap (the prequel to Time Crunch), Demon’s Treasure, Shredder, Saucer Crash, and Virus!, as well as the adult thriller, Outtabounds. An avid skier and snowboarder, he is a former member of the National Ski Patrol and spent several years patrolling a major resort. He is a certified scuba diver, a licensed pilot, and an Advanced EMT. He lives in central Utah where—like Chase—he has a special interest in finding dinosaur teeth.
