Fatal Dawn

Jess sighed. This was the most normal Christmas Day she’d spent in a very long time. She remembered holidays like this when she was a child. But while Peter was missing, she’d avoided Christmas and every other family gathering.
Now, she saw he’d thrived here. He’d lived a good and happy life, surrounded by parents and an older sister who loved him. The Tierneys had provided Peter with a better life than she could have done on her own back then.
She’d spent thirteen years looking for him, and nothing would give them that time back, but now the years faded away. The Tierneys had welcomed her with open arms, even as they must have feared she’d take Peter. They’d behaved gracefully, demonstrating they were good people who loved her son as much as she did.
How could she possibly take Peter away from all of this? But how could she possibly give him up again? Either choice was unthinkable.
Henry went into the kitchen for more coffee, and Jess followed. He asked, “Are you okay?”
She nodded. “More than okay. All those years. I hoped Peter had found a family like this to love him. But I was afraid he hadn’t. I worried about him every minute. In some ways, this feels like a miracle to me.”
Henry wrapped his arms around her. “What about Anna? She’s Richard’s daughter. Which makes her Peter’s half-sister. I know how you felt about him and you haven’t spent much time with her. You don’t know what kind of kid she’s become. Are you sure you want to get involved with her and all of this?”
“Richard’s been gone a long time, and Anna’s only a child. She deserves to know her brother. He’s fifteen already, Henry. He’ll be going to college soon. We need to take advantage of the time we have now. And that includes Anna, doesn’t it?” Jess shook her head and leaned into Henry’s embrace. “We’ll all be fine. We have to be. For Peter’s sake.”
Henry kissed her. When she pulled back, he said, “You know, all those years your days were consumed with only one goal. Finding Peter. What are you going to do with yourself now that you’ve found him? Have you thought about that?”
“I have. There are still way too many victims in this country who need justice, Henry. I’m a reporter with a platform while Taboo is still in business, at least.” She grinned. “I’ll keep on keeping on. Since I still haven’t won the lotto, I’m going back to work. What else would I do?”
