“And just what is your favorite horror movie?” Moira asked, her voice laced with antagonism.

“Invasion of the Crispy Lesbian Skeletons,” Caleb said, brandishing a DVD case.

  “No way,” Sophie said.

“Yes way.” He winked. “Why, do you love it, too?”

Sophie shook her head. “That is the worst piece of trash ever filmed.”

  “I know.” He grinned.

His phone rang, and he fished it from his pocket. At the sight of the screen, his eyes widened. “Shit, I gotta take this. Pop the movie in, okay?”

He tossed the DVD over to Sophie and hurried outside.

Sophie frowned at the DVD case. “I mean it, this is really terrible.”

“I’ll give you a week’s wages if you break it in half,” I said. “I don’t want to watch Invasion of the Crispy Lesbian Skeletons, either.”

I’d been working for Pearl, learning all about donuts and magic, and I had money to spare, especially because Matt wouldn’t let me pay for anything at all, despite the fact I’d moved in with him. The magic I learned from Pearl was way different from what I’d seen my mother practice. My mother’s magic was edgy and kind of scary. Pearl’s was just as potent, but rooted in the traditions of helping friends, rather than harming enemies.

“Done,” Sophie said, opening the case, pulling out the DVD, and breaking it in half. The snap filled the room and she looked around. “I can’t believe I just did that.”

“I can,” Finn said, tugging her onto his lap and dumping the DVD pieces behind the couch.

“Ooh,” Matt said from next to me.

  “What is it?”

He flicked his gaze toward the window, where I couldn’t hear Caleb too well, but I watched his lips.

  “You’re pregnant?!” Caleb hissed.

My jaw dropped. Everyone else seemed distracted by arguing over a new movie. I hastily voted for The Blob, not wanting to miss the action outside. Matt voted for Children of the Corn. Now it was up to everyone else to cast their votes, so I listened to Caleb’s conversation.

“Impossible,” he said. “I always use protection.” He paused while someone spoke on the other line, his forehead creasing and his eyebrows drawing down in anger. “Yes, I do.”

The movie started—The Blob won the popular vote amidst cheering from a few of us—and I tried to stay out of Caleb’s business. But he looked upset.

“Whoever’s on the phone with Caleb is giving him an earful,” James said, finally looking through the front window and noticing Caleb pacing on the porch. He frowned. “I’m going to make sure he’s okay.”

While he went outside, the rest of us settled into chairs and sofas to watch The Blob.

“Now this is a good horror flick,” Sophie said, leaning against Finn.

From my spot next to the window, I couldn’t help but overhear part of the conversation outside. Caleb had ended his call, and he was quiet for a moment.

“Need to talk to you,” James said.

While the opening credits rolled, I half-listened to the conversation behind me. I could tell Matt was listening to it, as well.

  “So talk,” Caleb said.

James said something, but I couldn’t hear it.

“The police officer in this movie is so stupid,” Matt grumbled.

“I’m telling you,” James said to Caleb outside. “You touch my sister, I’ll break your head in half.”

  Ooh. James sounded intimidating.

“Fuck that,” Caleb said. “She can make her own decisions about who touches her.”

I might have thought Caleb was a bit of a creep, but I had to admit, he had a point there.

Matt cleared his throat. I looked over at him to see he was smiling at me.

  “What?” I asked.

  “You’re pretty when you’re eavesdropping.”

I laughed. Nobody was paying much attention to us—their eyes were on the film. “Don’t look so disapproving. There’s no law against eavesdropping.”

  “Maybe there is,” he said.

I snatched his handcuffs from his belt and held them up. “Then I think I need to be brought into the station.”

“I have an interrogation room just for you,” he said with a laugh. “Want to get out of here?”

We quickly said our goodbyes. As we walked out to the truck, my phone rang. The caller’s phone number wasn’t familiar, but it was local. Knowing I was risking a spam call, I answered it anyway.

  “Cordelia?” a man said.

  “Yep,” I said.

  “It’s Kelson, from Redemption.”

  Unexpected. “Um, hi.”

“I know it’s not worth much,” he said slowly, “but I wanted to issue you a formal apology for everything that happened. We weren’t fair to you, and it was wrong.”

“Damn right it was wrong,” I said. “But I’m over it. Really. Still, it’s nice to hear the apology.”

“You and your mate need anything in Redemption, you come to me, okay?” he said. “I owe you a big favor.”

“Thanks,” I said. “I’ll keep it in mind.”

I ended the call and looked up at my mate. He smiled back at me and squeezed my free hand.

“You aren’t sad to miss the movie?” he asked as he sped us toward his truck to drive us home.

“No way,” I said. “I’ve had enough of horror for awhile. Besides, we live in Forbidden. The way things have been going, we’ll have another new adventure soon enough.”

Chuckling, he pulled me tighter against his side and gave me a smacking kiss. “I have a feeling you might be right.”

A Taste of Mated in Forbidden

  Caleb

I rolled over and my hand connected with warm, naked flesh. Opening my eyes, I saw an angel sleeping next to me.

“Moira,” I said, smoothing my hand over the delicate slope of her shoulder.

She murmured in her sleep and pressed back against me.

Damn, she felt good. My dick was already half-hard, just from waking up with her scent in my nostrils. Now with her smooth backside pressing against it, I was ready to go.

Scraping my teeth over her neck, I said, “Wake up, angel.”

She stretched and reached behind her to touch my cock, lightly squeezing it. Then without a word, she moved her leg back and over mine, giving me access to the heaven only she could provide.
