“They wanted to show you their appreciation, Brooke. The plan is to take all the money they raise today and give it to you to help with your medical bills, the damage to your car, and anything else you might need.” She spins around and looks at me, her eyes beaming with appreciation.
“I don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything. But c’mon. There’s some people waiting to see you.” I take her by the hand and drag her to one of the canopies where the rest of the company, along with her parents are waiting.
I watch her cheeks flush a perfect shade of pink as the whistles and cheers start from under the canopy. She’s so beautiful.
“Hey! Hey! Sweetheart! How are you?” Bobby asks, pulling Brooke into a hug so hard he rips her hand from mine.
“Glad your back, Brooke,” Andy says, patting her shoulder.
“Hey, Brooke. You look great,” Chief offers.
She wanders through the small crowd gathered under the canopy and everyone takes a turn welcoming her back. When she finally makes it back to me she smiles and wraps her arms around my waist. I pull her closer and press my lips to hers.
“Aaayyy!! It’s about time you too!” Bobby hollers toward us causing everyone else to turn and look. I feel my face burn red too but not for long. I look back down at Brooke and she’s smiling up at me. I’ve got nothing to be embarrassed about. I kiss her again and the cheers and whistles erupt from the crowd once more.
Across the street where the band is set up a familiar song starts to play and my eyes immediately flash to Brooke’s. She’s grinning at me shaking her head.
“C’mon, baby.” I pull her to the parking lot where others have already been dancing. I start humming the tune then start singing the words into her ear. “Cause girl you’re amazing just the way you are.”
“I don’t think I want to keep the money,” Brooke says to me while we’re dancing, surprising me.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean I chose to become a firefighter so I could give back to this community. I’ve always loved how supportive they all are of our company and I want to be able to give back to them. I want to take the money they are giving to me and give it to Marcy. She can put it towards rebuilding Micky’s.”
My eyes narrow at her and I’m floored. Could she be any more amazing? “I love you, Brooke.”
She smiles up at me before wrapping her hands around my neck and kissing me deeply.
“Ohh! I have one more surprise for you,” I say, beaming down at her.
She giggles, “More? What more could you possibly do for me?”
“Well it’s more like something I want to show you.”
She eyes me curiously as I pull her hand to my chest pressing it flat against it. “You feel that?”
“Your heart? Are you about to say something corny about how you’re giving me your heart, Conner Smoak?” She grins and raises a brow. I can’t hide my amusement. She knows me so well.
I shake my head, no. Still holding her hand I rub it up and down against my chest. “Do you feel that?” I smile my playful smile at her.
“Yeah? What is it?”
My grin widens. “Boyfriend material.”
She throws her head back in laughter and it’s the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard. Her eyes find mine and they are beaming with happiness. She pulls me into another deep kiss then says, “It suits you.”
