“Jason, buddy. I’m so sorry. I screwed up. Please rest so you can get better. I love you. If you need anything at all, I’ll do it.” Max’s voice rasped with guilt and grief.
“Jase. Don’t worry about anything except healing, okay? I’m right here. We’ll be right here with you. We love you and want you to get better, so just sleep, baby bro. Sleep.” Bree knew her brother needed to focus on healing, not concern about her beating the shit out of Max.
“Love you guys.” Jason’s words were garbled, but understandable. His eyes opened, found Bree, then darted to Max before closing again.
“He will be in his healing sleep again until tomorrow,” Ipeshe informed them.
Max sank back into the chair.
Bree kept her post at her brother’s feet. She looked at Iziqa and said, “let’s continue the discussion later. I need to be here with Jason right now.”
“As you wish. I’m happy to continue when the time is right.”
Iziqa and Ipeshe left the room.
“He’s going to need us both when he wakes up. But don’t think I’m ready to forgive your sorry ass.”
Relief washed over Max’s face. “Understood.”
Bree loosened her scowl as she glanced at Max. He nodded in return.
They settled into a comfortable silence to wait for Jason’s return to consciousness.

Acknowledgments
I have a lot of people to thank for helping me get this book finished and out into the world.
Jenn Vore Falls, thank you for the initial push to turn my idea for a short story into a novel (which turned into a trilogy). Thank you for helping me navigate the indie author world all along the way. And, thank you for helping me with the cover for this book! None of this would have happened without you!
Jennifer Dupuis, I am so incredibly grateful for your help and support! You’re a great friend and a fantastic editor! You seriously saved my ass.
Julie Shirk, thank you for listening to me ramble on and on about this story, and my journey as an author, for endless hours. Thank you for reading an early draft and giving me feedback. I appreciate your help and input so much!
Laura Elizabeth, thank you for reading an early draft and giving me your feedback.
Thank you, Lori Stone Handelman for all the help and excellent coaching as I started this novel. Your guidance was powerful and helped as I transitioned from non-fiction to fiction writing.
Amanda Nicole Ryan, thank you for insightful feedback and editing.
A big shout out to the wonderful Steve Richer for a great cover design. I was floundering and you came to my rescue. I love this cover!
To Traci Harrell, you are my wonder twin (even though we aren’t actually twins), my devoted sister, and the other half of my brain. I couldn’t have done this (or life) without your help and encouragement. Thank you for reading this story and giving me your feedback!
To my mother, Becca York, I finally did it! Thank you for believing in me and doing so very much to support me in every aspect of my life. And for always laughing with me. You are the base of our triangle. Thank you for your frequent reminders that it doesn’t have to be perfect - nothing ever is.
Finally, I want to thank my partner, Sally Clements. Thank you for listening to me and helping me work out plot issues and character problems. Thank you most of all for loving me and being there to support me through all of my health challenges. The love that shines from your eyes is a gift and fills me up.
