“Great, I’ll walk you home. How about that? I didn’t drive here either,” he offered.

I was glad that I’d gone to the pub that night. After yet another disastrous set-up by my best friend’s wife, I thought I was just going to drink alone until I got bored enough to go home. But I was wrong. Seeing Libby there, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t happy about it. There was something about her that made me feel… I don’t know, like a better version of myself, I guess.
We took a short stroll to her place and lingered on the sidewalk chatting for a few minutes. I couldn’t tell whether she was going to invite me in and I didn’t want to pressure her. We’d had a few drinks, but we were far from drunk enough to not care about what happened next. I could tell that she wasn’t sure how to end the evening, so I decided to give her a hug and a kiss on the cheek and walk home. I didn’t want to make her feel awkward or like I expected anything to happen.
All the way home, I thought about her. I was well aware that I barely knew this woman, but the thing is that I was already developing feelings for her and there was nothing I could do to stop that. I liked being around her. It was that simple. She made me laugh and I felt like she immediately understood me, which was strange and unfamiliar, but I liked it.
I got home and climbed into bed. I fell asleep without any difficulty. The next morning I woke up feeling a little worse for wear and yet I was in an incredibly good mood. I popped a headache pill and gulped down some orange juice to get rid of the rest of the slight hangover I’d earned the night before.
My morning routine was the same as it was every day. But that day, something felt different. I sang a little louder in the shower and smiled at my reflection while I brushed my teeth. And I knew it was because of Libby. I’d never felt this way before… at least not so soon after meeting someone.
I got to the office and immediately grinned when I saw that Libby’s blood test results had arrived. I opened them up and was relieved to find that there was only a slight iron deficiency in her results. I usually wanted the best for my patients, but this was different. I honestly cared that she was okay and it also helped that I didn’t have to be the bearer of bad news.
My next appointment wasn’t for an hour, so I settled down and dialed the number that she’d left on her forms.
“Libby Ranger speaking, hello?” she answered. Her voice was a little bit higher than it usually was, like she’d said that greeting a thousand times and was now just doing what felt natural.
“Hi, it’s Dr. Aven… James… How are you doing today?” I asked cheerfully.
“I’m good. Just had my first meeting at my new job and I think it went pretty well.”
“That’s great. I’m just calling because I got your blood test results back and wanted to let you know that you’re pretty much in perfect health,” I said.
“Pretty much? What’s the catch?” she laughed.
“You have a slight iron deficiency. If you pop by after work, I’ll write you a prescription for an iron supplement that will fix you right up.”
“Thank you. I kind of already knew about the iron problem. I’ve just been so busy that I haven’t had a chance to pick up some supplements. What time does your office close?”
“Officially at 5 unless I have a late patient, but I have quite a bit of paperwork to fill out, so I’ll be here until around 6:30 if that suits you?”
“Great. I’ll be there around 6. I just can’t leave work early on my first day.” She laughed again and it was like music to my ears.
I didn’t actually have paperwork and technically she didn’t need a prescription to get most iron supplements, but I really wanted to see her. I knew that if I’d said I was closing at 5 pm, she’d ask me to just forward it to a pharmacy, which, to be honest, is what I usually did for patients who couldn’t make it during office hours. But she wasn’t just any patient.
The day went by pretty simply. I had a few kids in with the flu, which was obviously going around the local schools, a woman with bronchitis and an elderly gentleman with gout. It was a regular Wednesday. Most of the time, I loved my job… but there were times I wished it was a little more exciting. I used to be a surgeon full time, but I found it impossible to have any sort of life. So now I performed surgeries at the local hospital on Thursdays. Just simple general surgeries, like gallbladder and appendix removals.
It wasn’t the life-or-death lifestyle I’d experienced in my late twenties and early thirties, but I liked getting to know my patients and being able to help people without always having to cut them open.
At 5 pm, I told my receptionist and Joyce, the nurse, that they could go home because I was going to stay late and catch up on some paperwork and reading. The reading part was true. No one ever tells you how much reading is involved with being a doctor. You need to know all the latest science and techniques… and researchers are coming up with new findings every day.
At around 6, I was about to call for takeout when I heard Libby come in through reception. I called out to let her know that I was in my office. She came walking in shortly afterwards. Damn, she looked gorgeous in a long black dress that clung to her curves. Her curly red hair was up in a loose bun and she was wearing a pair of high heels that she made somehow look less uncomfortable than they must have been.
“Ordering in?” she said, noticing the menu lying open on my desk. “Aren’t doctors supposed to warn you against fast food?”
“Yeah, well I’m not like other doctors… I live on the wild side.” I grinned and she laughed. “Anyway, Henry’s Chinese Cuisine isn’t exactly fast food. It’s pretty nutritious for takeout and only a little bit greasy.”
“Well, I’ll have to try it. To be honest, I’m not much of a cook, so I’m always looking for good alternatives. Back home, where I’m from, there’s this woman who delivers home cooked meals every day of the week and I pretty much kept her in business.”

I liked James. The light flirting was fun and I really enjoyed talking to him. I guess that’s why I’d agreed to come pick up a prescription that I knew I didn’t really need. So when he asked if I’d like to join him for Chinese takeout at his desk, I agreed. I wanted to spend more time with him.
Moving to a new town is usually quite scary and lonely at first. It takes a while for me to get to know people and trust them. But James made it all so easy. It felt like we were already friends and could relax and have dinner together. As much as I enjoyed being alone because it was new to me, I knew that I couldn’t spend all my free time on my own or I’d end up feeling homesick and I didn’t want that. I couldn’t go back and I didn’t want to.
I looked at the menu, but still had no idea what to order, so I asked the doctor to order for me. I figured that, as a regular customer, he’d know what to order. He smiled and called the restaurant. I was surprised when he spoke fluent Mandarin to the man who answered the phone.
“How do you speak Mandarin?” I asked once he got off the phone.
“Oh, it’s pretty simple. Just picked it up by ordering from Henry’s…” he replied with a laugh. “I’m just kidding. I lived in China for two years when I was a kid. My dad’s work had us moving around a lot, but China was the first non-English-speaking country that we moved to, so he insisted that I learn the language.”
“It must have been difficult, moving around a lot,” I said, having moved across quite a few states myself during my early years.
“It wasn’t too bad because I didn’t know what it was like to live in one place for more than two years. We’d been moving around since I was six months old. It was actually more difficult when we returned to America full-time when I was 12 years old. That was when I had to get used to staying still and getting to know people. Never mind that Gabe’s Point isn’t exactly a big city, it took quite a bit of time to get used to riding my bicycle to school and not having to adapt to a different culture.”
“So
you’ve been living here since then?” I asked just to keep the conversation going.
“Yeah, except for med school. I moved to Boston for that.” He smiled.
“Is that your humble way of saying you went to Harvard?” I quipped.
“Yeah, I guess it is. You know what they say: how do you know someone went to Harvard? They’ll tell you.” He laughed. “How about you, where did you study?”
“Columbia. Not exactly Harvard, but I still think it’s pretty impressive for how little actual work I did while I was studying.”
“So you were a party girl?” he asked, raising a comical eyebrow.
“Yes… you could say that. Until I met my ex, then I kind of had to calm down.” I didn’t want to talk about Jake, but it was true that my partying stopped when I met him.
At first I thought that I was just growing up, letting go of my irresponsible side. He’d always want to go out for dinner and drinks or spend hours at the bar talking. And when I’d suggest checking out a band I liked or going dancing, he’d make me feel like it was a silly thought. He was quite a bit older than me and I think that I always thought of him as the adult I was supposed to be. But I didn’t want to tell James all that.
“Hey…” James said suddenly, pulling me away from my thoughts. “You went all silent on me. You okay?”
“Yeah,” I replied quickly. “I just spaced for a second. Think I’m just hungry.”
It was as if mentioning that I was hungry summoned the delivery guy, as there was a knock on the reception door. James went to go get the food and I tried to empty my mind of all thoughts of Jake. I was having a good time, I didn’t need my ex-boyfriend to ruin a perfectly good evening when he wasn’t even there.
“I’ve been rude, I haven’t even asked how your first day was,” he said as he walked back in with enough takeout for four people.
“It was good, I guess. I just felt a bit like I was faking it until I could make it, you know? It’s just that it’s kind of a senior position and I don’t even know if I’m ready for it.”
“It’s new, give it time. The people who hired you knew what they were doing. Give them some credit. And give yourself some credit too. You know what you’re doing… you’re just a little outside of your comfort zone, that’s all.” He seemed to genuinely mean what he was saying and it made a lot of sense.
“Thanks, I think that’s exactly what I needed to hear,” I sighed.
We tucked into the food. I must admit that he’d ordered well. The food was damn good. It wasn’t too greasy and it was filled with flavor. After we’d finished eating, he tossed me a fortune cookie.
“On the count of three we open them… one… two… three,” he said, ripping open the cookie.
I read mine and looked at him, blushing uncontrollably. He grinned as he read his.
“You’re blushing, what does it say?” he asked.
I sighed and then read it out loud. “The love of your life is right in front of you. Yours?”
“Good luck has come into your life,” he replied.
And then there was an awkward silence before we both started laughing.
I looked at my watch. It was past eight and getting dark outside. “Do you feel like grabbing a drink?” I asked, not wanting the evening to end.
“How about right here?” He pulled a full bottle of whiskey from his bottom drawer. “Don’t worry, I don’t drink at work. It was a gift from a patient a while ago and I just forgot to take it home with me. Or, if you’d prefer red wine, we can head over to the bar.”
“No, whiskey is good,” I replied with a smile.
He got two glasses from the break room and poured us out a double shot each. “I hope you don’t like to mix it with anything but water because we don’t have anything else,” he laughed.
“My father always taught me, the only thing you mix with good whiskey is whiskey.” I smiled.

After the first drink, I put some music on. Nothing special, just some classic rock. After the second drink, we were singing along loudly and dancing around my office to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” As the song ended, she collapsed against my desk giggling. I could feel her body next to mine as we leaned against the old oak desk and caught our breath.
It happened suddenly and I couldn’t stop myself; I reached over and pulled her toward me and kissed her. It was magical. You know how generally a first kiss isn’t always great because you’re still getting to know each other? Well, this kiss was perfect in every way. My only concern was that she wouldn’t kiss me back.
She smiled when I pulled back and put her hands around my waist, pulling me back toward her. She kissed me tenderly, yet passionately. I deepened the kiss and wrapped my arms around her waist. I didn’t want to assume that things were going to go further, but we were certainly heating up. I pulled her close to me and turned her around, pushing her up against my desk.
She groaned as I lowered my mouth to her neck and left a trail of kisses all the way down to her collarbone. Her hands were roaming over my chest and she started to unbutton my shirt. I dropped my hands to her thighs and began to pull up her dress, stopping to grab her ass.
I had to let her go to take my shirt off and she pulled off her dress before moving forward and unbuckling my pants. I was already getting hard and we’d only just started. I picked her up and put her down on my desk. Kissing her from her neck down to her stomach, I separated her legs with my hands.

Before I could do anything, his hands were exploring between my legs. I let out a moan as he pushed aside my underwear and his fingers made their way inside me. He pressed his thumb down on my clit and I gasped, unable to control myself. I hadn’t been this turned on in a long time.
Soon, I was moaning as he rhythmically massaged around my clitoris. Finally, he removed his hands and I felt the soft touch of his tongue. There was nothing I could do to stop myself from making a noise. Thank goodness the office was empty so no one could hear my screams.
I leaned back on his desk, my hands gripping the wood as he made me orgasm for the first time in a long time. I bit down on my lip with my pussy pulsating. All I knew was that I wanted him inside me.
Once I’d caught my breath, I lifted his face with my hand and he came up and kissed me on the mouth. As he stood before me, I marvelled at his chiseled chest and muscular abs. For someone with such a demanding job, he certainly found time to work out.
I pulled him close to me, wrapping my legs around his waist. He paused for a second and then entered me. I gasped from the size. I knew he wasn’t small from the bulge that I’d seen through his underwear, but I had no idea how it would feel. It was both a little painful and very pleasurable at the same time.
I bit down on his shoulder as he began moving in and out at an increasing pace. I couldn’t believe that I was so close to a second orgasm so soon. I held off as long as I could, wanting to come at the same time as him.

I could tell that she was going to orgasm soon; I could feel her tighten around me. I was glad because I was so close to going over the edge. I felt my whole body tense up as her screams became louder and louder. Suddenly, there was nothing I could do. I kissed her deeply as we both orgasmed at the same time.
We sat there in comfortable silence for a moment or two, still catching our breath. Suddenly, she started giggling. It was infectious and soon I was chuckling too.
“I don’t really know what we’re laughing about, to be honest,” I said after a few minutes.
“It’s just… it’s not every day that you go to pick up a prescription and end up having an orgasm… or two,” she said, still giggling.
“What can I say? I aim to please,” I responded.
“Well, you certainly succeeded,” she joked and kissed me on the cheek.
We were sitting on the floor of my office, leaning against the wall. My arm was around her and her face w
as leaning against my chest. It was a really nice moment and I think we were both just enjoying the after-glow of amazing sex.
“What do we do now?” she said suddenly.
“What do you mean?” I asked, genuinely not understanding what she meant.
“I mean, do we put our clothes on and go home? I’ve never done this in someone’s office before. I don’t know how it works.”
“How about we get dressed, have another drink and then make a plan to go on an actual date sometime soon?”
“That sounds nice.” She smiled.
We got dressed and I poured us another whiskey as promised. We sipped and talked. I felt so comfortable around her. There was no awkwardness when I was around Libby. She was a woman who seemed to know what she wanted and when she wanted answers, she asked the right questions.
We talked about my life growing up and her childhood and university years. She stopped talking about her life after mentioning meeting her ex-boyfriend and I didn’t push it. I wanted to make sure that she was as comfortable as possible with me. I mean, nobody likes to talk about their ex, so I didn’t mind that.
“How come you’re not married? I mean, you’re gorgeous, smart, funny and, well, good in bed. So how are you still single?” she asked.
“You mean, how am I still single at my age?” I laughed. “It’s okay. I’m nearly forty and I get it. I guess I was a late bloomer. Got my first girlfriend at 20 and we dated for six years. But she wanted to get married and I wasn’t sure that she was the one. So we split up and I’ve had a few girlfriends over the years but nothing really felt right. I watched all my friends pair up and tie the knot and I guess I just hadn’t met the right woman yet.”
