Cloudwalkers

“Their work here is coming along nicely,” came the old man’s voice.
Gordon said, “Aye. According to Kincaid—you can see him over there—he assures me, a fortnight. No more than that.”
“Even so, you know it is but a temporary fix. It will last a year, maybe two. Then the quickfall will return to Jersey City,” the old man said, stepping up beside the CloudKing and towering over him. “You cannae change the dynamics of science.”
Gordon made a flabbergasted expression that went unseen in the dark. “I’d hoped my threats of an impending war would remain just that—mere bluster. That these wizards would make Jersey City sound and secure for a good many years to come.”
“At one time, I may have been able to help. But not now.”
Gordon waived away the comment. “No need. With Robert dead, there is a lack of any real leadership over there. Manhattan is mine for the taking,”
“Aye, I watched the forces heading out across the cloudbank. I was quite surprised you were not amongst them. Are you not the CloudKing?”
“Pfft, my officers are well-trained; they have their orders. Clearly, I am not built for battle.” Gordon turned, gazing up at the taller man. Even in near-total darkness, he still could make out the ragged scar tissue upon the man’s jawline and upper neck. He knew the ear on that side of his head was nearly non-existent, though his messy white hair mostly covered up the injury. “And you . . . you’ve no compulsion to be standing instead on the other side of the Hudson this good night, Professor?”
Professor Claremont Dob stared wistfully toward the distant horizon as Gordon gave the order and the army began its descent on Manhattan. He didn’t answer the CloudKing’s question.
