You're Only Dead

Emery worried his lip. "Please be careful there, Georgie."

"I always am," she replied evenly.

"Well," Emery huffed, looking at her fondly. "Will you at least be sure to take some of that money for me and see that Dave gets his share? Loretta as well?"

  "Consider it done."

Emery smiled. "Thank you, Georgie. Thank you so much. For everything."

She smiled back. "Thank you, Emery. For saving me as a girl…and for redeeming me as a woman. I'll never forget what you've done for me. I hope that we'll be friends always."

Emery wrapped his arms around her and gave her a very tight embrace. "Wish granted."

She clutched at his back for a long moment before they parted. Then she looked to Kurt, recomposing. "Mr. Gabler."

Kurt looked down on her. "Georgie."

They faced off for a few seconds, during which Emery liked to think he saw a look of mutual understanding between them. Then she looked over to Victor. "Mr. Scott. It's been a pleasure making your acquaintance."

"Yeah, you're alright, Faraday," Victor relented. "For a crafty little spy."

"And for all of your bullheaded whinging, you manage to be quite tolerable at times."

If Emery wasn't imagining things, Victor looked just a tad miffed. "That's a shit goodbye."

"Oh?" Georgie asked with a raised eyebrow.

Emery watched with shock as Georgie leaned up, pressing her lips against Victor's quite firmly. Victor nearly stumbled, freezing up. When she pulled back, he stared down at her, his eyes wide. She pinched his bearded chin and stepped back.

  "How's that, then?"

  Victor visibly gulped.

"I'll be in touch, gents," she said, giving them one last look. Then she turned, picked up her bags, and made her way off.

Emery was grinning madly, looking to Victor. The American in question was still staring after her, seeming flushed. Emery slapped a hand on his shoulder. "You bloody dog, you. I'll bet that beats a cockroach in your shorts any day."

Victor stared numbly ahead. "My dick is hard."

Emery frowned and slowly drew his hand back.

Kurt watched as Georgie disappeared around a corner before he went back towards the car. "We ought to be going now."

Victor turned his head to look at him and shook out of his daze abruptly. "Okay, lovebirds. I'll take you wherever you wanna go. You guys need plane tickets or something?"

Kurt paused, hand on the top of the car, and turned back around to face Emery. His face was quite contemplative. Then he shook his head. "That won't be necessary."

Emery looked between them. "What do you mean?"

"I mean that perhaps our business in Canada is finished. Perhaps we can make our life wherever we please. Perhaps, as you said, that book of our lives has closed. We can choose any setting for the new one we like."

Emery stared back at him in awe. "But…where would we go?"

Kurt smiled serenely, looking so calm and easy, like the weight of the world was no longer on him. Like a truly free man. "I hear quite nice things about Brighton."

Victor made a sound of intrigue. "Hey, at only four hours away that'll practically make us neighbors."

  "Practically," Emery laughed.

Kurt gestured to the car with a head toss. "What do you say, love?"

Emery stuck his cold hands back into his pockets, fondling the newly adorned ring around the finger of his left hand with a thumb, and looked up at the silvery overcast sky. "Right then," he said cheerily. "Chapter one…Brighton."
