The Rapture

Page 30

by Claire McGlasson

There are so many other steps in turning words into books and Anne Owen has guided The Rapture through this transformation. Copy-editing (Tamsin Shelton), proofreading (Jane Robertson) and typesetting (Dave Wright at Typo•glyphix). Each have left their mark on this story. Thanks to the entire team at Faber. This book could not have been in better hands.

The friends, old and new, who have supported me during the writing of this book are too numerous to mention. Thankfully they know who they are. But how can I not thank Emelie Olsson for her generous and genuine joy in my successes; Poppy Bagley for tea on a Biblical scale; Elodie Harper for blazing the trail; Claire Adam and Bev Thomas for sharing the journey; and Chloe Keedy for reading my pages and (more often) my mind.

Authors Jenny Ashcroft and Louise Jensen were early readers who gave me the confidence to submit, and I thank all those agents who took time to meet and talk about their vision for my debut.

It would have been so much more difficult to write in the first place without the support of my parents, Susan and Andrew, and parents-in-law Jennifer and Chris. Thank you for all you do for our family.

Which brings me last, but certainly not least, to my husband Richard and our children Kitty and Freddie, who could be forgiven for thinking I really had joined a cult. Thank you for understanding my obsession, for giving me the time and space to write and for bearing with me when my mind was with a society of ladies in the 1920s instead of in the moment.

Richard – knowing it was my dream was enough for you; and that means the world to me.
