That morning when she'd woken up in the cell in Hawk’s basement, she never could have imagined that the day would end like this, but as she and Sampson brought Jimmy up to his room and put him in bed, watching the little boy fall asleep, she knew that she would never be alone again.

  Chapter 16

Megan made sweet potato pie for Thanksgiving and held the pie dish in her hands as they stood on the front porch of Hawk's house. She hadn't been back since the day they'd held her in that cell. She completely understood why Hawk had done what he did.

All the guys had sworn they wouldn't tell their mates until Megan was ready, but she still felt uneasy. She had met Elena and all the men on the Justice Squad, but she hadn’t met the other women.

Hawk opened the door and excitedly invited them inside. He took her offering and they went into the dining room where everyone was gathered around the table. Elena carried out a huge turkey that seemed to dwarf her petite figure. She set it in front of Hawk, who held the carving knife in his hand.

"Before we carve the turkey, I think we should all briefly say what we are grateful for this year," Zander said.

Everyone at the table agreed. And Zander started. “I'm grateful for my friends. My home. And the chance to make the world a better place. We were successful in our mission. And now all of the hyena terrorist cells have been taken down.”

"Hear, hear," everyone said, lifting their glasses around the table.

The rest of the guys continued to share their gratitude for their mates, their homes, their friends and for their children. Max and Stephanie were particularly grateful for their little boy, Elena and Hawk were grateful for the baby on the way, but when it came time for Megan to say what she was grateful for, she found it was hard to narrow it down.

"I'm grateful for Sampson. My mate. The most wonderful, most intelligent, most forgiving man I've ever known.”

"And I'm grateful for my nephew, and most of all, my mate,” he said, grasping her hand and running his thumb over her knuckles. “She has shown me that true love really does conquer all. Not only that, it can heal a broken heart."

She leaned over and kissed his cheek as Jimmy clapped from his highchair. Everyone toasted to the love and happiness they all shared on that Thanksgiving Day.

"Now let's carve this turkey," Hawk said.

The food was passed, and the drinks flowed. Everyone ate to their fill, complimenting each other's dishes. Megan's sweet potato pie was well-liked, and she enjoyed Stephanie's cornbread, and Zander's mashed potatoes. Hawk tried to pass off an apple pie as his own, and Elena laughed when Rider refused to believe that he’d baked it himself.

"He really did bake it, this time," Elena said. "I swear to God."

"I'll believe it when I see it," said Titus.

The friends laughed and ate and drank wine.

After dinner, Elena and Megan went to a guest room upstairs to change Jimmy.

"I was wondering about the meditation classes that you offer at the yoga studio. I think they would be good for me."

"You're welcome to come anytime," she said. “Free of charge. I think that you will find it very beneficial."

Megan walked back downstairs with Jimmy on her hip and joined the others in the living room. They were playing a game of charades. They finished the game in a tie.

When they were at home together, after putting Jimmy down to sleep, they sat in silence by the fire, sharing the last piece of apple pie.

"I understand why you did it," he said.

"I know you do.” She took a sip of her red wine. "You don't have to explain it.”

“But I want to say it. For the record, I didn't understand it at first. I felt betrayed. But then, after we mated, I could feel how distraught you were and there was no way that I could ever judge you for what you’d done. Considering the amount of pain you experienced, it was the most logical reaction.”

Megan let out a long sigh. She knew that he had forgiven her, but it was still so good to hear him say it out loud.

He finished, “I just hope you can forgive me for not seeing it at first.”

“We forgive each other because that's what mates do," she said.

“That's what mates do," he said, tapping her wineglass with his.

They embraced and kissed each other, the warmth of their love stronger and brighter than the fire in the hearth. It filled her up to the very brim. And Megan knew, in that moment, that she would never feel alone again.
