Fifty Shades of Greek

Before I knew it, we were zooming around the streets of Athens and heading in the direction of home. I leaned my head back against the seat and fought the urge to think about Dana but of course I couldn’t. I started trying to recall what her voice had sounded like. What had been the last thing she had said to me?

I felt us begin to slow down and realized we were easing onto the dirt road that led to home. I still couldn’t believe that I thought of this place as home now. Just as we were approaching Darien’s house his cell phone began to ring. I really tried not to be nosey but saw it was Cassie calling. I kept my reactions to myself.

I turned my head to look out the window and watched the scenery as he answered. “Yes.”

They talked for a few minutes. The entire conversation seemed rushed. Whatever it was that they were speaking about caused Darien to get heated as he started speaking in Greek and I could tell he was cussing.

A few moments later he hung up and by then we were in front of the house. “Everything okay?”

He loosened his grip on the steering wheel and nodded. “Just business. Some ventures Cassie was working on for Kirakis Industries have pretty much tanked. I need to leave for New York in the morning to go and sort them out.”

“Oh,” I said and we both exited the car. I didn’t want to think about if Cassie’s trash ass was going with him or not.

The blue door to the house opened and Helena stood with Alex in her arms. He was excited to see us, and I immediately took his heavy self from her. Alex had been putting on crazy weight and felt like a little cinder block these days. I figured soon he would be walking.

“Who is the cutest baby in the world?” I asked him and he just grinned from ear to ear before yanking on my hair. I shrieked in pain and he just laughed harder.

Darien took over then and took him out of my arms as I tried to get my hair out of his meaty grip. We moved into the kitchen and sat down as Helena fixed us some food.

“How long will you be gone for?”

He was playing along with Alex and acted like he didn’t hear me, so I repeated myself. He looked over his nephew’s head. “You’ll be happy to get rid of me. But I’ll be gone just a few days.”

“Is that pigeon going with you?”

  He frowned. “Huh?”

“That pigeon,” I repeated myself again. Was he going deaf?

He caught on the second time and laughed. “Who Cassie?”

  “Again, that pigeon…”

  “No. She won’t.”

I wrinkled up my nose like I smelled something stank. “Good.”

  “Are you jealous?”

I heard Helena cough, and laugh at the same time. I think she enjoyed listening to me and Darien argue.

“Why would I be jealous of a woman that needs to eat a sandwich. I whooped her a…” my eyes darted to Alex. I wished I was holding him so I could cover his ears and finish my sentence. “I’m not jealous.”

  “Okay,” Darien replied smiling.

Won’t shit funny. I kept my cool though. I was not about to let him get under my skin. Helena put out food in front of us: roasted chicken, and fruit. Than she took Alex over to his high chair so he could much on some finger foods. He was getting more and more teeth by the day.

  “Don’t be angry,” Darien spoke.

  “I’m not.”

  Eye roll.

“Look, I told you that the Cassie situation has been over. I know you don’t like her, so I don’t make it a point to talk to her unless we are discussing business.”

“You can do as you want, we aren’t together,” I replied, and the words burned my tongue as soon as they left my mouth.

My cellphone started to vibrate in my back pocket and an unfamiliar number showed up. It looked like a New York number, but I was unsure of who could be calling. I excused myself to go and take the call.

“Hello,” I said as I closed the door to my bedroom behind me.

A smooth masculine voice replied back, “Hi, I’m calling for Allanah Haughton.”

  “Speaking.”

He cleared his throat a bit. “Miss Haughton, this is Shane Collinsworth. I was your sister’s lawyer…”

The conversation that came forth from that was intense. This man had known Dana and he wanted to meet with me so that I could get the inheritance handed over to us as soon as possible. I could also tell that despite Shane having the most Caucasian name on planet Earth, he was a brother from the southern United States. God, I was starting to miss home just from talking to another American.

“Well when can we meet?” He asked.

“Well, actually my schedule is pretty open. I can fly back to New York pretty soon.”

I heard him flipping some papers around. “Your sister, she was something else.”

Where had the came from. “Did you know Dana….like outside of being her lawyer?”

“I can tell you more when we meet in person,” he said. “I’ll email you some paper work and all my contact information will be there. I look forward to meeting you, Allanah.”

He ended the call before I could ask anymore questions. I clutched the phone to my chest. Tears were threatening to spill over, and I didn’t know why. Well maybe I did. There was someone else in the world who knew Dana after all and maybe they could give me a little peace of mind.

I had been leaning again the door when Darien knocked. I shook the tears away from my face and opened the door peering up at him.

  He seemed alarmed, “You okay?”

“Yeah,” I swiped at my face again. “That was a lawyer for Dana’s estate. They want me to come to the U.S. as soon as possible and collect.”

Darien nodded. “Well why don’t you come with me tomorrow. I don’t want you going through this stuff alone.”

I forgot sometimes that he had had to bury his brother a lot sooner than I had had to deal with Dana’s death. “That sounds good. What should we do about Alex.”

Darien pulled me in close. “He’ll be okay with my mother for a few days. Helena will tend to him. We’ll be back before he blinks.”

He leaned down and kissed my lips.

  “Sorry, yet?” I asked.

“No…but how about we play a game and we’ll see if I can get there.”

He raised his eyebrow and began to close the door behind him. He scooped me up into his arms and took me to the bed.

“Do you prefer ice, or fire?” I asked and pulled him down into a kiss.
