The Winter Duke

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Writing this book was an intense experience, and a lot of people stood behind me to help make the experience into an actual book. First and foremost, my family: Mom, Dad, Elizabeth, Elias. Boy, the things you put up with. Thank you for that, and for the encouragement, for cooking for me, for talking me down from the cliffs of writerly despair.…
Thank you to my agent, Kurestin Armada, for walking me through proposals, always working with me to hone my craft, and dealing with panicked transatlantic phone calls. And for insisting that this book was good whenever I doubted it.
My editor, Hallie Tibbetts, continues to be fantastic and a person I’d like to work with for eternity. Here’s hoping for many more books for your editorial scalpel. For my LBYR team: to Morgan Maple and Valerie Wong for amazing publicity and incredible graphics, to Karina Granda and Billelis for the fantastic look of this book, and to Jen Graham and the managing editorial and production teams.
Thank you to my fellow writers and commiserators, who can always help put things into perspective (and cheerlead!): the Malmö writers group, the Copenhagen writers group, the #Novel19s and Class2k19, the Armada (best agentsibs ever!). Big thanks to Carina Bissett, mentor and friend—see you in the autumn for your amazing classes, I hope!
Thank you to my sensitivity readers for their poignant comments and fantastic advice concerning Ekata and Inkar’s relationship. Any remaining insensitivities are mine alone.
And finally, to all the people who read and loved We Rule the Night: Your positivity kept me going, even when I was certain that I could crawl under the bed and no one would miss me.
I enjoy being inspired by history, and the plot of The Winter Duke began with the story of Alexander I of Russia’s patricide, which was also regicide, and a strangely unlikely coup. I highly recommend reading The Romanovs by Simon Sebag Montefiore for a fascinating look at a brutal royal family.
