My Husband's Secret

Brent’s eyes went from empty to shocked. “W-what?”
“They should look into Clara. She may have been involved.”
Rianne nodded. “Of course. I’d be glad to do it. Did you learn something new?”
Brent took hold of my arm. “Rianne, can you excuse us for a moment?” He led me inside. “Are you out of your mind? You can’t give the police any more reason to dig than they already have.”
“But Rianne knew about Clara. It pulls the suspicion away from you!”
He paused, staring at me with a solemn expression. Finally, he sighed. “You’d do that for me?” he asked, and I noticed a sudden glisten in his eyes.
“Look what you did for me,” I told him, tilting my head toward my shoulder.
“I can’t let you do this. I won’t let someone else go to prison for what I did. Not you. Not anyone.”
“You don’t know that you caused it. It could’ve been his head injury.”
“I sawed his brake line in half, Naomi. He had maybe a day before his brakes gave out completely. The head injury may have caused his driving to be worse, but I made the conscious choice to do what I did. If anyone is going to jail for this, it’ll be me.”
I choked back tears, placing a hand on my stomach. “I need you around.”
“Then we stay quiet,” he said, taking the saw from me. “We don’t give them anything to work with. Let the investigation end.”
I swallowed, realizing he wasn’t understanding what I was telling him. Maybe he wasn’t ready for that realization anyway. “Okay.”
“What I did makes me no better than him. I don’t deserve to be with you.”
“You’re right,” I admitted. “But I don’t care.”
He lowered his lips to mine, the first kiss between us that wasn’t wrong. “Neither do I.”
I didn’t know whose crime was worse—his or mine or Lucas’. I didn’t know whose lie, whose action, caused my husband’s death. What I knew was that answering that question wouldn’t bring my husband back. I knew that Brent had done what he thought he had to, to protect me, just like I was willing to do for him.
I knew my husband wasn’t innocent, because none of us were. We’d done the best we could with the cards we were dealt, to protect those we loved and to protect ourselves.
At the end of the day, a love like that was all I’d wanted.
Someone to make my eyes dance like Clara’s and Alaina’s had at the mere mention of Lucas.
Someone to love me no matter what.
Someone to protect me no matter what.
Someone to kill for me.
Turns out, I had that all along.
And it was all thanks to Lucas.
