  CHAPTER ONE

  Olivia

“Have you ever wondered whether one small decision could have changed everything?”

I hear a voice say this. I’m not sure if it’s coming from inside my head. It sounds like me. But, it also sounds like someone is yelling it at me. I don’t know. I feel very off tonight.

I look out through my bedroom window. At the full moon in the sky. At the families up and down the street drinking cider and carving pumpkins on long plastic tables. Little girls working feverishly to scrape the orange gunk out. Giggling and gossiping about the boys at school.

I remember when I was young enough to enjoy such things. Oh, who am I kidding? I’ve never been that girl. I was born a twenty-one year old. Now that I am twenty-one. I’m mentally really like forty.

My family owns the nicest house on the street. For some reason, though. They’ve never wanted to decorate. And, it’s for this reason we weren’t invited to this little neighborhood tradition. Not that if we showed up, our neighbors wouldn’t at least pretend to be excited. Everyone is this town is too afraid of my dad to tell him what they really think. Everyone in town except Brett…

Finding myself letting out an enormous yawn, I decide to get ready for bed. Bleary-eyed, I stroll towards the bathroom connected to my bedroom.

I strip down to nothing but my underwear and leave them in a messy pile in the center of my bedroom. I’ll pick them up later. I just really need to feel some steaming hot water on my skin as soon as possible.

I turn on the hot water, and the bathroom becomes filled with steam. I’ve never had fantastic eye-sight. But, tonight, it seems far worse than usual. The air's moisture is so thick I can barely see.

Before I get into the water, I peel off my panties and notice something written below my waistline.

  R A C H E L

What the hell?! Why do I have my best friend’s name written two inches above my pussy? I mean, we did get drunk the other night at her annual Fall party. But, this seems super out of character, even for my drunk character.

Luckily, the word is written in a marker that comes out relatively quickly as soon as the water hits it.

  KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

I hear someone pounding on my door.

God damn it. What the hell does my dad want now?! It’s bad enough he’s making us stay home with all the lights out so that the neighbors don’t try to come up to our door and invite us to their event. But, he also has to bother me during my private time?!

Our rule with me deciding to live at home instead of finding my own place was that he wouldn’t bother me during my damn private time.

“Daddy, what is it? I was about to take a shower!” I scream at him as I dry myself off, grab a bathrobe off the hook and march to my bedroom door.

  KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

He keeps punching my locked bedroom door.

“Fine, I’m coming!” I shout, totally aggravated. “Omigod! What do you….Brett?”

As soon as I open my door, I don’t see my dad. I see Brett staring back at me. Six foot six inches of pure muscle. His cruel, aftershave good looks along with sheer size and masculinity are scary to most. Yet, I’m driven to it.

“I’m sorry I snuck into your house again,” Brett growls. “We need to talk.”

“No, we don’t,” I tell him.

I haven’t physically seen Brett in over a month. After my dad threatened to call the cops on him the last time he snuck in to see me, we decided only to communicate via FaceTime for a while.

I can feel my middle rise with heat, excitement, pleasure. I hold my legs together in case I start dripping out of my bathrobe.

“We do,” Brett says, lumbering into my bedroom.

I close the door behind him and lock it.

“This town is too small for you. You should have never come back. You should be out there in Silicon Valley, inventing shit that’s going to change the world and make you billions.”

  “Shut up,” I tell him.

I push Brett with both hands until he lets me force him onto my bed. Then, I jump on him and begin taking off his belt, while kissing his exposed chest.

“The only reason you’re still in this town is for me, and you know it,” Brett says, pushing me back.

“So what?” I ask him. “Aren’t we in a relationship? Isn’t that what people in a relationship do?!”

“Not if one of them cares more about the other’s future than--”

“Being with them?” I interrupt. “You’d rather me be successful without you than to be with me. Is that it?”

  “Yes,” he says without hesitation.

“You don’t mean that,” I say back. “You don’t!”

  “Olivia…”

“You don’t! You’re just twisted up because of what my father almost did to you. We can live somewhere else less expensive than San Francisco! We don’t need this stupid, little town anymore!”

  “Olivia…”

“Tell me you don’t want me, and I’ll stop,” I say, teary-eyed and desperate.

I roll my bathrobe off my body and throw it on the floor. I know logically that Brett doesn’t want to have sex. Still, his eyes drink in my smooth, slender body betraying that his body wants something else. The cock I’ve watched him jack off countless times through the phone has formed a massive tent in his pants.

He wants my body more than anything in this world. My body that I was planning to make his as soon as we got married because I believe in the old fashioned ways are the best ways when it comes to relationships.

But I’m willing to give all that up because I’m not going to lose him. I’m not. Olivia Silver never loses anything!

Brett touches the edges of my breasts. Then, his fingers inch towards my hardened bud. Even though I’m horny, I’m so nervous, and it shows.

He slides both his hands down my body. His hands cup my bottom, and I let out a gasp. They’re so vast and rough, and when I feel them tighten around my ass cheeks, I feel sparks inside my channel desperate for more.

I shift my position so that Brett feels my wet heat rub against his bulge. The size and stiffness of his ample manhood frighten me as much as accelerates my desire wildly.

“Olivia enough! I don’t want to be with you. And I never will,” he says, pushing me off of him. “Guys like me never end up with gi
rls like you. We are your amusement. Your revenge against your overbearing dads. And, I’m not going to be used.”

“What? Where the hell is this coming from? You’ve never talked this way before!” I scream. “Why are you doing this?”

“Cover yourself up, Olivia,” Brett says.

He grabs my bathrobe and places it gently in my hands.

  “This isn’t you,” he shrugs.

Brett walks out of my bedroom. With a running start, I slam the door behind him and lock it again.

“There’s a reason!” I shout after I hear him walk down my stairs. “There’s a reason?”

Why am I saying this? It seems like it’s supposed to mean something to me. But it doesn’t. Not anything that I can remember anyway…

I get up and grab my phone off my desk. Then, I sit down on the edge of my bed and look through my favorited contacts.

Suddenly, everything starts to get blurry. I feel like I’m going to pass out for some reason. The last two names I see are

  FIONA

  RACHEL

I’m not sure who to call. Both girls have their strengths, but I can’t figure out which one I need the most right now.

I finally pick a name, but as soon as I bring my thumb to the screen to click it, the two names blur into one. The phone begins to ring, and I have no idea who I’m calling…

  CHAPTER TWO

  Brett

I know it’s the last place I need to be, but I’m headed for the strip club.

My mind’s eye can’t remove her irresistible image. Every last inch of her alluring face and enticing curves and smooth, unblemished skin remains fixed in my mind.

Every muscle in my body is rebelling—wondering how I could have passed up an opportunity. I had the chance to pound her pinkness into forever, right in that decadent little bedroom of hers on the fourth floor of her McMansion, like a princess tower nestled at the castle's height.

Tonight is the first pathetic night in a stream of thousands dedicated to letting her go. I’ll find a stripper. She’ll look as close to Olivia as any woman can, which won’t be close enough. But, with some willpower and some luck, maybe it’ll be enough to get through tonight.

Olivia is an alien to a guy like me. She’s not only beautiful and brilliant. Olivia is also the sweetest woman alive. She’s going to make everything better for so many people one day. Like cheating the system, I thought I might have lucked up and had gotten this girl who was so obviously too good for me.

I was raised not by a father, but by three convict brothers. Three guys behind bars for most of my childhood, sometimes simultaneously—while somehow managing to keep social services from taking me out of their custody.

Olivia’s dad is the richest man in town. His grandfather was one of the founders of this town or something like that. I don’t know.

No one in my family has done a positive thing in our lives, and most of us don’t even intend to. I come from scum, and often I feel like I am meant to return to the dirt with them—except when I’m with Olivia. Then, I feel like I can honestly do anything. Be anybody.

Olivia is so pure. She’s a genius. Like, an actual god damn genius. She’s going to cure cancer and create flying cars or some shit. That girl can do absolutely anything, and I’m just in awe of her. She deserves a man who can do anything for her. Recently, I’ve tried my best to be that man, which ironically, why I now can’t.

A month or so ago, I decided to go heavily into gambling. I knew that if I were to take a woman like Olivia away with me where we could be together, I’d need some serious cash. Despite what she claims, I’m smart enough to know she couldn’t live any other lifestyle than the luxurious one she’s accustomed to. The only problem with my plan? I’m a shit gambler…

Suddenly, I get a text from a friend inviting me to get dinner at the local diner with a bunch of the guys.

I text him back that I need to be alone tonight and slide the phone back into my pocket. That’s when I see something written on the back of my hand.

  R U N

I try to think about what it means. "Run" is definitely not anything you’d want to be written across the back of your hand. Maybe, it was something I wrote late last night. A reminder to run away from this relationship with Olivia no matter how much it killed me. Yeah, makes sense.

I cross the empty street in the autumn rain, still a few blocks from the strip club. It’s gotten dark now. The dead red, gold, and brown leaves scattered over the sidewalk glitter under the lit lampposts. It isn’t even Halloween yet, and candy wrappers are littering the ground, which I crush flatly with my boots. They’re probably from the local elementary school a few blocks away.

I see two men appear from the alleyway across the street from me. Even though I have no reason to be on guard in a neighborhood like this, I feel this psychic sense that I should be.

The two men cross the street towards me. And, as I continue to make my way down the sidewalk, I realize they are, in fact, here to attack me. I catch a quick glimpse of a knife, which one of them is brandishing in his loose leather coat.

I think about throwing a punch. That way, even though I’m outnumbered, I could at least catch them by surprise and maybe get away. I also think about running in the opposite direction, back the way I came.

But I’m not going to choose either of those options. Instead, I’m going to do all I can to prevent this from escalating into something it doesn’t need. I don’t want to give Olivia’s dad, yet another reason to think all I am is trouble.

“What’s up?” I ask as they get closer to me.

“You know what this is about, right?” The one with the knife asks me.

  “Not really,” I answer.

“You have an outstanding gambling debt of twenty grand, and you don’t have any idea what this could be about?” He asks me. “This is what you’re going to do. You’re going to go with us into that alleyway over there. And, you’re going to do it peacefully.”

“What are you going to do to me?” I ask calmly.

At this point, I don’t really care what happens. My whole world was Olivia. She was my obsession. Now she’s gone. I’m not at all sure, I’ll bounce back.

“Don’t worry,” the other one says, smirking. “We’re not going to kill you. We need you to pay up first.”

I nod. We can make this quick and painful. These guys can throw some punches at me, and I won’t stop them. I deserve it. I just broke the heart of the most fucking incredible woman in the world.

I follow the two guys across the street over to the alleyway. But, as soon as I walk back onto the other sidewalk, my vision becomes blurry. Things become darker and then turn solid black.

Without realizing how I got there, I’m on the ground. The two guys are stomping down on my rib cage. I look up and see black holes form all over the sky. And, as they keep on kicking me, I eventually lose my vision entirely.

Thoughts of Olivia race through my mind like a runaway train. How much I love her and how much I hurt her and how sorry I am. And, how now, I’ll never get to tell her any of that…

  CHAPTER THREE

  Olivia

“You are always better at remembering things than I am,” I say as Brett wakes up from using the Autumnview device. “I’m shocked you didn’t get to the point where you remembered where you went afterward.”

“That’s always one of the harder moments to get through,” Brett says, avoiding eye contact.

“Hey,” I say, cradling his face in my hands. “It’s okay. That’s why we’re doing this. Remember?”

“Yeah,” he says, smiling back. “We’re using this device you built so that we can go back and figure out where we went wrong.”

“So, we can know how to go right,” I tell him, cheerfully. “We’re going to get through this. I just know we are!”

“You’re right,” Brett says back. Though, I’m not sure I believe he believes that. “I guess my idea of having you write things on our bodies to help us remember
didn’t exactly pan out.”

“It was a good suggestion,” I say appreciatively.

“So I guess it’s off too—”

“Your sister Rachel’s house. Yeah. I remember now that she was the one I called—even though between her and Fiona, your sister and I are hardly even friends,” I tell Brett. “But, I think I just wanted to feel close to you through her. Gosh, I know it was so stupid.”

“No, Olivia. It wasn’t. Don’t you remember what ended up happening?” Brett asks me with a mischievous grin.

“Oh. Yeah, I do,” I say, biting my lower lip. “I think I’ll go first!”

“Don’t be gone too long,” Brett says. “You know I can’t wait to come right after you when it comes to this memory!”

“Oh, I definitely know that!” I say, batting my eyelashes flirtatiously.

I sit back down in the chair.

Brett straps the device around my face. Then, I hear his footsteps drift across the room to the machine. I listen to the sound of him clicking a few buttons before my vision blurs in a hundred different colors…

I’m on the staircase at Rachel’s house, watching Brett talk to his sister. He’s leaned up against the door frame gripping the side of his body, and I can see that his flannel shirt is drenched in blood.
