“Are you sure?” he asked, his eyes filled with concern.

  “I need you, Jack.”

I spread my legs as he slid over my body, settling between my legs. With just his boxers between us, I could feel every inch of him. His warmth pressed against me and the heat built between us. He rocked against me slightly, grinding his erection against me.

“I’ve wanted you since the moment you walked back into town. I’m not letting you go,” he whispered against my lips.

Then he was kissing me hard, his tongue slipping inside as he rocked against me. My panties were soaked.

“Christy,” he murmured. “Do you know what you do to me?”

  “I feel it.”

He kissed me again, and then his lips trailed down my neck as he moved down my body. His tongue brushed over my nipple and then he was sucking it into his mouth, his teeth pulling at it. My fingers threaded through his hair as my eyes slipped closed. This was everything I wanted with him.

Then he was between my legs, pulling my panties down. His lips met mine as flames licked at my pussy. I cried out as his tongue pressed against my hot flesh. I was quaking inside, my whole body shaking as he brought me higher and higher, then pushed me over the edge. I crashed down around him, my orgasm so strong that my entire body quivered underneath him.

He crawled up my body, pressing his lips to mine. His strong hands cupped my face as he ground his erection against me. “I need you.”

I yanked at his boxers, my hands slipping inside to grip his firm ass. “I need you, Jack. I need you inside me.”

I barely felt him remove his boxers, and then he was pushing inside me to the hilt. I bit my lip to keep from crying out and waking Brody. I wrapped my arms around him, holding him to me. He started rocking inside me. With every thrust, his pelvis brushed up against mine, harder every time.

His breath huffed out against my skin as he kissed me hard. “Oh fuck, Christy. I wish we had done this sooner. I wish…”

I shook my head. “It’s in the past. We can’t go back.”

He nodded, pushing inside me again. The fire between us built until it felt like flames were igniting around us. His mouth covered mine, muffling my cries. The bed banged against the wall with every thrust. I panted hard, barely holding on.

“It’s you,” he panted. “It’s always been you.” His hot breath caressed my skin. Tears pricked at my eyes with every word. His hand cupped my face gently as he rocked inside me harder and harder. My body convulsed around his, overwhelmed with emotion. He groaned as he pushed inside me one last time and spilled his cum deep inside me. My sweaty body clung to his as he rested his forehead against mine and pressed kisses all over my face. With every whisper he murmured, I fell harder and harder for this man.

All those years I missed out on suddenly seemed worth it to finally have him here with me. He rolled off me, pulling me against him. I hooked my leg over his, still trying to calm my racing heart. He may not be ready to tell me he loved me, but he showed me just now with every touch, every kiss. I was his, and I would be lost in him forever.

He pulled the covers up over our bodies, the cool air finally starting to dry the sweat caking my skin. I should probably get up and take a shower, but the feel of his body wrapped around mine lulled me into a sleepy state I had no desire to leave. The pounding of his heart lured me deeper and deeper until I finally drifted off to sleep.

When I woke with the morning light, I felt refreshed and happy for the first time in a long time.

  “Good morning, beautiful.”

I peeked up at Jack, slightly embarrassed waking up next to him. This should be natural to me after years of hanging out with him all night long, and spending nights together. But this was different. Now we were lovers. He’d seen me naked, but never in the daylight. I pulled the covers up to my chin and grinned at him.

  “Morning.”

“Why are you hiding from me?”

“Because you can see my lady bits.”

He let out a roaring laugh before yanking on the covers and diving underneath them. His lips trailed down my body as he forced my legs open. Then his mouth was on me and he was moaning as he kissed me.

“Jack,” I moaned. “Stop. What if Brody comes in?”

He popped up, his head just peeking out from under the covers. “It’s still early. We have time.”

  “But—”

“No buts,” he said, diving back under the covers. I pulled them up over my chest anyway. The scruff on his jaw rubbed between my thighs, making it nearly impossible to hold back the scream traveling up my throat. I moaned loudly, squeezing my eyes closed.

  “Christy? Are you okay?”

My eyes flew open in horror as Brody stood in the doorway and stared at me, his face pinched in concern.

“Um…yes! I’m fine.” I jerked my legs together, smashing Jack’s head in the process. “Um…I think your dad went downstairs to start breakfast. Why don’t you go see if it’s ready.”

“Okay.” He tilted his head. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

I heard Jack chuckle under the covers and slammed my legs together again, effectively shutting him up.

“Yeah, I just had a foot cramp. I’ll be down in a minute.”

“Okay.” He turned and ran out of the room and I flung the covers off, practically shoving Jack out of bed.

“You have to go downstairs,” I hissed.

“I have to take a shower. I smell like sex.”

“Well, I can’t go down there!”

“It’ll be fine,” he reassured me.

“Not if he comes back in here when he can’t find you downstairs.”

“Alright,” he said, holding up his hands. “I’ll go downstairs.”

He climbed out of bed and pulled on his boxers, but then he kneeled on the bed and pressed his lips to mine in the most scorching kiss to date. I almost pulled him back in bed, but I heard little feet on the stairs.

  “Go,” I shooed him away.

He grinned at me and pulled on a pair of pants, not bothering with a shirt. Brody was just about to run in the room when Jack grabbed him and swung him up over his shoulder.

“Come on, bud. Let’s go make some breakfast for Christy.”

Jack shut the door and I could faintly hear Brody jabbering to him as they walked down the stairs. I laid back and stared up at the ceiling, a smile plastered on my face. I couldn’t believe it finally happened. I was happy for the first time in years.

But then doubt crept into my mind. Was I just a replacement for Natalie? The things he whispered to me last night couldn’t be made up. They were so heartfelt, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t have regrets as time went on. Flinging the covers off, I grabbed a quick shower. It wouldn’t do me any good to stew over things I couldn’t control. I had to have faith that no matter what, Jack and I would make it. We were at the start of something amazing. I wouldn’t ruin it with uncertainty.

After getting dressed, I went downstairs and sat at the kitchen island as Jack moved around my kitchen, making eggs and bacon. I laughed, remembering how he tried to cook chicken. Maybe this really was all he was able to make. He turned around just as the toast popped up. Brody, who was sitting on the counter, grabbed the toast, screeching when he felt how hot it was.

  “Hot, hot, hot!” he whispered.

Then he dug the butter knife into the butter dish and scooped out a huge clump for the top of my toast. He attempted to spread it around, but ended up digging a hole in the center of the toast. I covered my mouth in laughter.

When he was done, Jack brought the plate over to me. The eggs were brown in certain spots from being overcooked, but the bacon was perfect.

  “Wow, this looks amazing.”

Jack tossed the dish rag over his shoulder in what had to be the sexiest move I had ever seen. I stared at him, subconsciously licking my lips as I watched his muscles flex. He grinned at me knowingly.

“How does that food look?” he asked, waggling his eye
brows at me.

“Delicious,” I said, taking a bite of my food. He watched as my mouth moved, chewing up the bacon. I flicked my tongue out to catch a bit of the grease around my lips. Jack’s eyes turned molten as he watched.

“Buddy, why don’t you go upstairs and get dressed while I start on your breakfast.”

Brody quickly jumped down from the counter and ran upstairs. Jack moved quickly around the counter, hauling me out of my seat as he wrapped his arms around me and kissed me hard. His tongue fucked my mouth and his teeth raked over my lips as his hand tangled in my hair.

“God, I want to fuck you so hard right now. How could you do that to me?”

“Do what?” I asked innocently, batting my eyelashes at him.

  “You know what.”

He pressed his lips to mine again and then tore himself from me, running his hand through his hair. “You’re a dangerous woman, Price.”

He poured me a cup of coffee, setting it in front of me with a wink. As I sipped my coffee, I watched him make breakfast for his son. He really was a terrible cook, but he was trying. I finished up my breakfast just as Brody came running downstairs.

“Took you long enough, little man,” Jack teased him.

“I had to put my clothes away, just like at home.”

“You unloaded your bag?” Jack asked.

“Uh-huh. I didn’t want to leave a mess. Then Ms. Christy might ask us to leave.”

Smiling, I set down my mug and pulled Brody in for a hug. “I would never ask you to leave. And you can call me Christy when we’re not at the daycare center.”

  “Really?” his eyes lit up.

  “Really.”

  “Cool!”

Jack set a plate of food down and hoisted Brody up onto the stool. “Can you watch him while I take a quick shower?”

  “Sure.”

He smiled, kissing me softly before leaving the kitchen. I caught Brody grinning at me, his eggs practically puffing out of his mouth.

“You kissed Daddy again,” he giggled.

This was going to be interesting.

  Jack

“There he is,” Carter grinned at me as I walked into the station. “Now, that’s how you get your girl back.”

I tossed my keys on my desk, frowning at him. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about that searing kiss Christy gave you last night. Hot, man. Totally hot.”

  “How did you see that?”

He kicked his feet up on the desk and grinned at me. “Well, your neighbors got a second showing, so now it’s all over the town page.” He frowned slightly. “Are they your neighbors or her neighbors?”

  “What are you talking about?”

“Well, you came back with a bag for you and Brody, which would indicate that you moved in. And I gotta say, that’s moving pretty fast considering what happened between the two of you. But either way, I guess they’re your neighbors now, too.”

I stared at him in amazement. “Do you ever wonder what would happen if you stopped paying so much attention to other people’s lives?”

He glanced up for a minute in thought. “Not really.”

“And how did you know that I went back to her house with a bag.”

He sat up, grinning at me. “I thought you might ask that. See, the Condiment family lives across from Christy—”

“Who?” I interrupted. “There’s no one in town named Condiment.”

“You know, Carol and Jon. They have three little kids…” I shook my head. “One’s a redhead and the other two have blonde hair. The mom always wears green. Ketchup, mustard, and relish? Their last name is literally Relish. They’re the condiment family.”

“Where do you come up with this shit?”

  “Everyone calls them that.”

“This is the first I’ve ever heard of this,” I said incredulously.

“Really? Because it’s kind of well known around town.”

I threw my hands up in frustration. “Can you just get to the point?”

“Anyway,” Carter stood, walking over to the coffee pot. “Carol let me inside for afternoon tea. And then we had dinner as we watched all the footage on her security feed. I have to say, I was quite impressed with how you got back inside. Though, it would have been better if I hadn’t been guessing what you were saying. And if I could see inside her house so I could have seen how it all played out.” He took a sip of coffee and continued. “On the other hand, if you were to set up the security system at Christy’s house, I could have Andrew hack into it, and then I could get the live show.”

“Christ, I forgot all about the security being set up. I’ll have to make sure it gets done tonight.”

“While you’re staying with her,” he tipped his mug in my direction. “Now that you live there, you’ll need to stay on top of that shit.”

“I’m not living there. I’m just staying there for a while.”

  “How long is a while?”

“I have no idea. She’s got nightmares from walking in on a murder.”

Carter frowned, leaning back against his desk. “What are you talking about?”

“That’s why she moved back to town. She was working a DCFS case and she walked in on a murder. She couldn’t take it and she came home.”

  “Yikes, that’s rough.”

  “And she’s not sleeping.”

He grinned at me. “So, you offered to stay and comfort her.”

“It’s not like that. I mean, it’s sort of like that, but it’s not. We talked things out last night.”

  “And?”

  “And what?”

“Aren’t you going to tell me all the dirty details?”

“No,” I said, taking my seat. “The last thing I need is to end up on the town Facebook page with my entire life spilled out there for everyone to read about.”

“I wouldn’t do that to you.”

“Really? So, you just happened to show up at these Condiments’ people’s home and sat down for afternoon tea. And she just happened to have the video feed out to watch?”

“No, I definitely went there to spy on you, but can you blame me after I spent half the night in your truck outside her house?”

“Don’t you have better things to do? Like teach Abby to drive?”

“Don’t remind me. You know, she gets her license back soon. She just has to pass the test. With any luck, she’ll fail and I’ll just have to drive her around for the rest of her life.”

“If she doesn’t have her license, how did she drive Christy to the theater?”

“Shh, pretend you don’t know about that.”

“Are you sure you want to drive her around the rest of your life?”

“Hey, you saw the video feed. That woman’s a menace on the road. I can’t in good conscience let her get behind the wheel.”

“You can’t in good conscience wish for her to not get her license. That makes you a terrible fiancé.”

“Maybe so, but at least she’ll be alive.”

Deciding to change the subject, I moved on to more important matters. “Any reports on the boyfriend?”

“Nope, I filed the paperwork for you, but it hasn’t gone in front of the judge yet.”

“I wish I could get it faster.”

“I’m sure everything will be fine. Now that you’re staying with her, it’s not like he’s going to make a move.”

“You can’t be sure about that. He’s obsessed with her. No one in their right mind leaves lingerie on someone’s bed after they’ve broken in. I’m telling you, something about this guy is off.”

“Jack,” Carter sat up, his face serious. “You need to take a step back from this. You’re not thinking clearly. You’ve taken the steps needed, but you can’t watch his every move. You’ll drive yourself insane. You’re getting the security system set up, and everyone will be safe. Besides, what’s the likelihood this guy will continue to come down here? He’s going to lose interest, especially
when he sees she’s moved on.”

“I hope you’re right,” I muttered, but somehow, I just wasn’t sure that’s how this would go.

After getting the security system installed, I felt marginally better about everything. I found myself obsessing over this situation with Thomas, though. I was constantly checking on him, just to make sure he was actually where the police told me he was. Normally, they wouldn’t go to the trouble, but they were willing to help a fellow officer out.

The problem was, I couldn’t sleep at night thinking about him coming down for another visit. I had to take care of this now, and I needed to do it without her knowing.

“Where are you headed off to?” she asked as I pulled on a dark henley over my t-shirt. I had already tucked my gun into my waistband at the small of my back. I quickly pulled the henley down to cover it.

“I have to go help a buddy out at another department.”

  “Doing what?”

  “Stakeout.”

She frowned slightly. “Seriously, they do stakeouts in small towns?”

“You wouldn’t think so, right?” I grinned. “It’s just a local drug bust. Nothing major. We’re just trying to catch the seller before the drugs are on the street.”

“And why do they need you?”

“They’re short staffed, and it’s in this county.”

  “Where?”

I kissed her on the mouth and stepped back. “Sorry, I can’t give out that information. But don’t worry. It’s not dangerous. I promise.”

Her eyebrows knit together as she watched me finish getting ready. I pulled on my boots and grabbed my phone. “How long will you be gone?”

“Hopefully only a few hours if all goes according to plan.”

“Jack,” she grabbed my arm as I turned to go. “I don’t want you to do this. I have a bad feeling about it.”

I pulled her into my arms, angry at myself for making her worry, but this was something I had to do. “Hey, I promise you, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. I’ll call you in a few hours, okay?”

“Maybe I could call Carter to check in with him,” she suggested.

I gave a tight nod and pressed another kiss to her lips. “That’s fine. I’ll call him and tell him to keep you updated.”
