Daily Suspense In MC & Mafia Romance
Chapter One
Jackal stopped along the road and sat on his bike. Surrounded by the darkness, it wrapped around him like a blanket. He stopped because he had to piss but he took a moment to appreciate the silence of the night. There were no cars rushing past him at the speed of light, no traffic of any kind at the moment. No flashing lights of the city either. The headache he had earlier was fading quickly.
Kicking down his stand, he threw his leg over his machine and stood up. Heading over to the side of the road, he lowered his zipper. He did his thing then pulled up his zipper.
Turning away, he thought he heard something. He slipped his hand behind his back and reached for his weapon. He hated being caught unaware. Crouching, his gaze made a search of the immediate area. He didn’t see anything out of place, so he moved carefully and quietly. Scanning another section of the area, he thought he saw a lump in the distance.
Carefully, he approached it, all the while keeping his eyes moving around in case this was an ambush of some sort. They had been expecting retaliation from just about anywhere after the trial that took out half the offices in their town a few months ago. His MC, The Devil's Advocates and another MC, the Hell’s Fire Riders from Texas got rid of a nasty street gang to clean up Baton Rouge.
They threw out the trash and made the streets safe again, but everyone was still on high alert. But now there was a new threat out there. They didn’t know much about this threat yet, so everyone was more than a little on edge.
He approached the lump cautiously and heard another groan. The sound was scarcely heard but he heard it. Frowning, he came closer yet. Then he noticed a foot, a bare foot on the cool wet grass. Moving his gaze upward, he saw the foot was attached to a leg covered in jeans.
From what he could see of her, and it was a her...her ass looked great in those jeans. At least he hoped it was a woman, if it turned out to be a man he was gonna be pissed.
He reached out and turned her over slowly. When her head turned, he could see her face. Her long blonde hair was matted with drying blood. Her left eye was swollen and discolored. There was a gash across her cheek that leaked blood down her face. a matching gash ran along her temple as if someone had smashed a huge fist into the side of her head. Her lips were bruised and split as dried blood had dribbled down her chin and stained her neck. He could see by moonlight, bruises around her neck, as if someone had choked her. He didn’t know what this woman had done but no one deserved this treatment.
Her shirt was torn open and there were bruises all over her upper body. It was as if someone had used her for a punching bag. He couldn’t help but wonder how she got here, along the side of the road, like garbage thrown from a car.
He gathered her into his arms and carried her over to his bike. He couldn’t leave her here on the side of the road to go and get a different vehicle ... the clubhouse was only five minutes down the road. The only reason he’d stopped in the first place was because he could no longer hold his bladder. He’d been holding it since he left town twenty minutes ago.
Taking off his belt, he wrapped it around her wrists. Then he got on the bike and turning her he placed her facing him, he put her arms over his head and pulled her as close to him as he could get her. Her head was in the crook of his neck but at least he could see the road to get her back to the clubhouse.
He drove home slowly one handed as his other hand was holding her body close to his own. Pulling into into the compound, he drove to his duplex. He lived on one side of the duplex, the other side was still open. The club used it mostly for storage as no one wanted to be that close to the President. That arrangement suited Jackal just fine too.
He carried the girl all the way to his guest room then changed his mind and took her back to his own bedroom. He wanted to keep an eye on her until he knew what her story was. Placing her on his bed, he then looked around the huge room.
His bed was king sized as he was a big man. At six foot five inches tall and two hundred eighty pounds, he wasn’t a small man. She looked so tiny when he put her down. He took a moment to simply look at her. As his eyes skimmed over her features, he couldn’t help but wonder what color her eyes would be.
He reached for his cell phone and dialed a number. “Doc, grab your shit and get over to my duplex. I got a problem here.”
He hung up the call before Doc could ask any questions. Then he looked back at the woman on the bed. He pulled her jeans off carefully. He didn’t want to hurt her any more than she already was but he knew Doc would need to examine her.
Throwing the jeans down on the floor, he lifted her gently and tore the remaining bits of her shirt off, leaving her clad in just her underwear he pulled a blanket over her body and waited for Doc to arrive.
The fact she hadn’t regained consciousness yet bothered him some. When he heard his front door open, he went out into the hall to guide the man they called Doc into the bedroom.
Doc paused a moment then made his way down to Jackal’s bedroom. “What’s ya got?” He looked over the rims of his glasses at him.
Jackal motioned over at the bed. “I found her in a ditch along the highway. She was still alive when I found her, although someone beat the hell out of her.”
Doc went over to the bed and looked down at the woman. He frowned as he studied her injuries. He pulled the blanket back and gazed her bruises for a moment then pulled it back up to cover her. “Better get me a bowl of warm water, and a washcloth. Then help me clean her up so we know what we're dealing with.” Doc growled as he set his bag on the floor, hauled a chair over to the bed and sat down.
Opening his bag, he took out his stethoscope and listened to her heartbeat. He looked back over his shoulder and saw Jackal still standing there. “You gonna help me or should I call someone else?”
Jackal frowned at him and turned to go to the kitchen for a bowl of water.
Doc carefully examined the injuries she had and found several cuts and even more bruises but the one that concerned him the most was the blow to her head at her temple. He wouldn’t know the damage until she came around again, if she came around again.
Head wounds were tricky and he’d seen more than one soldier die from a blow to that area. When Jackal returned, he began to bath her face and head. The water turned pink then red as he washed her wounds clean. “Do you know who she is?” Doc asked as he threw the washcloth in the bowl for the last time.
“No fucking clue,” Jackal admitted. Now that she wasn’t covered in blood, he could see she was a beautiful woman. “I stopped on the way home about five minutes from here to piss and I found her. Couldn’t just leave her there so I brought her home with me.”
“Well, you did the right thing. It’s gonna get cold enough tonight that she might not have survived with the beating she took.”
“How is she doing?” He wanted to know.
“Well, her heartbeat is stronger now that she’s warm.” Doc nodded. “It was pretty low when I first got here.”
“What does that mean?” Jackal grumbled.
“That means she could have been out there for a while. The blood on her head was dried and dark brown while the area around her temple wound was swollen at one point but I think the swelling is going down. She could have been out there at least a day or two already. Another night might have killed her.”
“Fucking hell,” Jackal swore under his breath.
“Did you see anyone hanging around maybe checking on her?” Doc asked.
“No man, I just stopped to take a piss. Finding her was accidental.”
“Finding her probably saved her life,” Doc corrected his statement. “Just keep an eye on her tonight and I’ll check back in the morning.” He began packing his equipment up.
”Is she gonna be ok?” Jackal asked.
“No clue at this point man. It all depends on how scrambled her brain is when she wakes up, if she wakes up.”
Jackal nodded then looked at the other man. “Let’s keep this between you and me until we know more. We don’t want or need whoever did this to come looking for her to finish what he started.”
Doc nodded. He looked over at his President and wondered out loud, “You don’t think this was one of ours do you?”
Jackal shook his head. “No way. Our guys wouldn’t do this. No one here would have done this but someone did. And I don’t want word out on the street that she’s here, not until we know what we’re dealing with. Hopefully she’ll have some answers for us when she wakes up.”
Doc nodded. “I hope so Pres, I hope so. She could be the king pin that could blow this town apart.”
“How do you figure that?” Jackal frowned.
“There’s something going on or fixin’ to happen. We barely got through the trial and taking the streets back but everyone has been talkin’ lately. Things aren’t settled yet. But it's not coming from us or Silas’s people or even the Kings. No this could be another threat. Everyone feels it but it's not clear yet where it's coming from.”
“When you’re talking everyone, who is everyone?” Jackal raised a dark brow at him.
“I was talking to Silas and his group the other day.” Doc looked at his president. “They can feel it and I’ve learned to respect their insight of how things are going.”
Jackal nodded. “Silas was trying to tell me something tonight but I just didn’t get it. He didn’t come right out and say the words but he hinted about being uneasy.”
Doc stood up and grabbed his bag off the floor. “You need to listen to what these people are telling you man, they know this city better than we do. They see beyond what we can see. The boogey men hiding in the shadows can’t hide from those people.”
Jackal watched as the other man left the room. He turned and stared at the woman in his bed. She looked better now that she was cleaned up but she was still out of it. He went over to the bed and sat down on the edge of it. The mattress tipped her toward him and he put his hand out to stop her from rolling off the mattress. Her skin was warm to his touch now where it had been cool before.
