Maria looks at me and smiles. “I’d say you’d like something simple, yet elegant. She’s a beautiful woman, Everett.”

“She is, Maria. She’s very special and I love her.”

“Tell me about her and I’ll help you pick something special.”

“She’s beautiful, she’s funny, caring and she doesn’t take any of my bullshit. She’s sexy and she’s the one person who I can be myself with. Truly myself.”

Maria pulls out tray after tray of sparkly diamond rings. There are big ones, small ones and some truly disgusting ones. Well they might not be to some people, but they would be for Saylor.

She places four rings onto the display mat and waits for me to pick them up and have a look at them.

I know as soon as she places them down which one I love. I know Saylor will love it too. It’s not as big as some in the cabinet, but it’s beautiful. It’s a square cut diamond, but it has a pink hue.

As I’m looking at it, Maria tells me, “The pink diamond is one of the rarest and most expensive diamonds. There aren’t many available for sale in the world. I love this because it’s beautiful and elegant, but it’s also so rare.”

I put it onto my little finger to see what it would look like and I know that Saylor will love it. I just know she will. She has to.

“I’ll take it, Maria. This ring is my future.”

  Chapter Four

It’s been four days since Saylor walked out of my life. Four very long and awful days. But I’ve been busy. I know Saylor said she was staying with Cass so I avoided contacting her. Instead I went straight to Saylor’s father.

When I rang her house, her father answered the phone. I’ve never spoken to him before and when I introduced myself it didn’t go well. I took hit after hit of what he said. Saylor had rung home and told him about the pregnancy and how I broke her heart.

I told her father that I love her and want to be with her. It took a while for him to calm down, but he agreed to see me the next day.

After driving the two hours to get to Saylor’s family home, I’m greeted by her father at the door waiting for me. “Come in, Everett,” her father said whilst holding the door open.

“Thank you for agreeing to see me. I know you don’t want to and you want to talk to Saylor about it, but I appreciate this time with you.”

I follow him into the kitchen, where we both sit.

“So what do you want?” Her father asks, looking me directly in the eyes..

“Straight to the point, just like Saylor.” I smile at him. “I love your daughter, Sir.” I hold up my hands to stop him from speaking. “Please just hear me out. Saylor thinks I picked my family over her, but that’s not the case. I love her and want to be with her.”

“Then why haven’t you gone to get her?”

“I don’t want to just run after her without everything in place. She needs to believe in me. She needs to know that I love her, need her, and want her for the rest of my life. Yes, I’m giving her a chance to calm down before I go and bring her home.” I laugh. “We all know about her temper and how stubborn she is.”

“That’s my daughter you’re talking about.”

“I know, Sir. I want to tell you why she left, from my point of view. I’m sure you’ve heard hers. My mother hates Saylor. She thinks that I should marry someone of the same business and monetary standing as us. As far as she’s concerned love doesn’t mean anything. But I don’t feel like that. I think, no, I believe that love is the most important thing in a relationship next to honesty. I told my mother that I’m not going to marry Zara, and that I’m going to marry Saylor and she hates that. She did what she could to turn Saylor off me, telling her disgusting things that no one should ever tell anyone.”

“What are you going to do about it?” her father asks, smiling at me.

“I want to ask for your daughter’s hand in marriage. I want your approval that I can make her mine completely. I promise you that I will cherish her until I die.”

“Look, Son, I can see how much you love my girl, but I wouldn't give you my blessing unless she wants me to.”

“I know that, but I don’t want to ask her until I know you have said yes. I don't want our union to be marred by your hatred for me.”

“I don’t hate you, I just don’t like seeing my daughter so upset.”

  “Nor do I, Sir.”

“For god’s sake stop calling me Sir. My name is James.”

“Yes, Si… James. I wouldn’t come out here and show this side of me to you if I didn’t love her so much. If you say no then I will stay out of her life. And I think you know that’s not really what she wants. Not deep down.”

James smiles then he says exactly what I was hoping he would. “I give you my blessing, but if you fuck up again, don’t come back to me. This is a once in a lifetime agreement. Understand?” He holds his hand out for me to shake.

“I understand and I am so thankful.” I stand.

  “Where are you going, Everett.”.

“I’m going to win your daughter back.”

  “Won’t you stay for dinner?”

“Not this time, but we will be back real soon; the two of us.”

He walks me to the door. “I’ll see you soon, yeah?” James asks.

I hold my hand out to shake his and he pulls me in for a man hug and slaps me on the shoulder. “We will. Drive safe.”

Now it’s time for me to get my family back!
