CHAPTER SIX
Outside, the moon was up and you could not differentiate night from day-time. People were still moving up and down and so it was not unusual for such meetings. In fact Consolacion, was one of the safest villages in the region and the security was not in any way compromised.
She walked and before long, she had met her old friends Lilian and Johnny. They had schooled together and all of them had completed their fourth form. Although they had sat for their final exams in the same year, Johnny had not done very well. Lillian, though had opted for a course in hairdressing and she was doing great.
“Hello Linde’” Lilian greeted. “It is long since we met. How is everything at your ends?” “Hi, glad to meet you too. Mmm! Things aren’t so bad but just trying to make ends meet. How about you, Johnny?” Linda asked. “Oh, I am doing fine. How is your dad and mum? Hope they are doing fine too.” Johnny answered smiling. “I can see you are in a hurry. Where are going this time of the night, you must have……mmm…,” he added jokingly. Linde did not feel offended in any way.
“Well, I have an important appointment with Andrea at the coffee shop adjacent to the Caro and Marie stores. He called me this morning and said he had good news for me. So I would better hurry lest he becomes impatient. Lilian and Johnny excused her as she stepped up her pace. They tried to mumble something but not loud enough to reach her ears so she surged on. When she looked at her watch, she almost did the rest of the journey in a run. But on a second thought she decide to compose her herself lest she let her curiosity spoil her occasion.
Her heart was pounding heavily as she kept reducing the distance between her and the coffee shop. At one time, she found herself talking alone. The thought of her being part of the staff at Caro and Marie stores was beyond her imaginations. Above all, she was more concerned about the plight of her family. She prayed in silence and hoped for the best. However, she did not play down the adage that says “If you are hoping for the best, prepare for the worst.” She had nothing to worry about. This was only the beginning and she had a long life to lead ahead.
