The Justice in Revenge

Melissa, my editor, to whom this book is dedicated. She saw the rocks through the fog when I thought I was sailing clear skies and helped pinpoint several key areas that made this book sing.
DongWon, my agent, who got me to trim quite a bit of my outline before I put fingers to keys, and who was in my corner every step of the way. DW said something about which character this novel really was about that brought it all into focus for me.… He’s a genius like that.
My beta readers, Arnaud Akoebel, Dan Knorr II, and Kristine Nelson, who provided invaluable insight into some of the character arcs and helped me course correct when I was steering off the map. Thank you, friends!
TeamDongWon and Drowwzoo remain my faithful aunties and uncles, graciously giving me their sage wisdom on everything from writing to career advice. I wrote this book before The Sin in the Steel hit shelves but not before readers began to get their hands on it, and it’s a tricky thing, writing for the first time while the outside world begins to slip in. Their steady hands on the tiller kept me true.
Penultimately, to you, dear reader. Thank you for coming back. Not only did you take a chance on an unknown, you returned, and that is what careers are built upon. I’m sorry for Eld, deeply and truly. He was never going to let Buc face Sicarii and the gangs of Servenza alone, no matter the cost. That we should all be so brave. I hope, when you’ve had a moment, you’ll come back for the conclusion of Buc’s story.
Finally, Rachel, who has to live with me. Living with a writer means sailing where the wind changes not by the day but by the hour, sometimes by the minute. A great scene laid down, another sinking beneath the waves. Reviews, business, marketing decisions, and sundry things that could make or break a career and nearly all but the page outside of your control. All of that weight has brought more than one writer low, but Rachel’s always been there. She is, as I said in Sin’s dedication, never wavering. Thank you; I couldn’t do this without you.
The shipwrights at Tor continue to astound, and there are so many to thank, I’ll inevitably miss a few, but know that everyone there is the reason why this book is in your hands. Thank you to: Amanda Schoonmaker, senior contracts manager, who drew up the contracts. Nathan Weaver, managing editor, from whom all production floweth. Jim Kapp, production manager, who interacts with the printers, among other things. Megan Kiddoo and Dakota Griffin, production editors, who handle the different stages of production. MaryAnn Johanson, copy editor, who caught a bunch of continuity errors and kept me honest.… Anything you find in the lines that doesn’t make sense I probably STETTED. Peter Lutjen, art director, has a fine eye; he commissioned the art and designed the cover. Lucille Rettino, vice president, associate publisher, director of marketing and publicity is, as I understand it, the boss of many who came before and a force of nature.
Especial thanks to Renata Sweeney, senior marketing manager, who headed up the marketing efforts this time around and is a tireless advocate for fine fiction everywhere, and to Caro Perny, publicity manager, who handles all of my appearances and gives me the same attention bestsellers receive despite my being a newb. I’m forever in your debt.
