Devon looked up at Joe. “Mom’s great Joe, but I want to be just like you.”
He put his muscular arm around the little boy. When he looked up, Darlene was standing before them. She smiled.
“Come on, sport, bedtime.”
Devon hopped off the couch and ran to his room. “I’m never being like that rabbit,” he yelled back at Joe.
When Joe pushed himself up from the couch, Darlene wrapped her arms around his neck. “What greater gift can I ask for? My son wants to be like the man I love. He looks up to you, Joe.”
He kissed her nose. “And what more can I ask for? I have the respect of a great kid and the love of his hot, delicious mother.”
She giggled.
“Joe Murphy, after we put Devon to bed, I want you to show me some of that loving.”
“You never have to ask.”
She whispered in his ear.
“Baby, you’re such a bad girl. I’ll make sure I make good on every one of your naughty requests.”
“You better, Joe Murphy.”
He took her hand and walked with her to Devon’s room. He thought about the story The Tortoise and The Hare. His days of being a lazy rabbit were long behind him. For tonight, he grinned devilishly, he’d be a slow and steady turtle. Tonight he’d create his own fairytale.
