She captivates my imagination in ways I never knew existed.
All I want is to hold her, touch her, and just be with her – forever.
But she’s my best friend’s little sister,
And he doesn’t want a playboy like me anywhere near her.

But now there’s nothing pulling us apart.
This playboy is now committed to claiming what is his,
And this time it’s his family!
Chapter One
Kip
“You call that a pass? Is your arm getting tired from no female attention?”
I laughed loudly at my joke as I jogged over to our Quarterback Chance Atkins who was grabbing a much needed water break. My own throat felt drier than the Sahara. Playing football in eighty-five degree weather was not as much fun as it usually was. The heat from a brutal summer had held on into the first few weeks of September, but soon enough the cool days of fall and the bright leaves of autumn would be ushering in and we would be sweating in more comfortable temperatures.
Chance laughed and hit me in the arm as I caught up to him. “That pass was fine. Your hands are a bit slippery. That’s on you.”
I grabbed some water and enjoyed the cool refreshment hitting my mouth and throat as I closed my eyes and tried to get out of the sun. We were about to have our first regular season game this coming Saturday and we all had to be ready for action. The first few games against teams that weren’t even in our conference and had no business being on the field with us had been a breeze, and we’d shot our record to two and zero. That was fine and dandy, but what happened when we had to scrap and fight tough teams for real? I had always been against playing weak teams in the beginning of the season. It did nothing but pad the record and it lulled you into a false sense of security as a team.
“I have to agree with Chance on this one,” Bobby said straddling beside us. “You got a case of the butter fingers. Maybe you are spending too much time with all those girls you are always chasing.”
I shook my head. “You are crazy. I am not about to go celebate like you guys. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. And besides, I don’t chase them—the girls chase me.”
“Well, I guess being a rich celebrity has its benefits,” Chase said.
I scowled. It pissed me off when they brought that stuff up. “Hey, I’m not rich. And I’m not famous.”
“But your daddy is,” Bobby reminded me. “You grew up privileged and you still get that. Don’t deny it. Hell, with your grades the only reason you are still in this school or on the team is because your daddy donated a new library last year.”
I couldn’t really argue with that. My father was Roger Raynes. He was a popular movie actor who even though his career had dwindled from his heyday, still did pretty well with a new series he’d just landed. I had no desire to be a rich famous guy, and I hated it when people tried to say I was some celebrity brat. I was for the most part, but I’d done my best to distance myself from all of that, which was why I’d gone to school halfway across the country from my father, Hollywood, and all of the sludge that sort of thing could bring with it. I hated it all.
“Whatever,” I said. “How did this become about me? If I was poor, I’d still have girls after me. I look like this and I’m a great football player. You know that I’d be riding the bench otherwise, no matter how much money I have. I just don’t get this whole celibate thing you’ve got going on. It’s weird and unhealthy for guys your age. If anything you need to get more women. Sex is good for giving you that extra edge.”
“You are really full of yourself, you know that?” Bobby said.
“Thanks,” I replied.
We finished our water break and I jogged back out to my position. I was a tight end, but I had speed and agility similar to a running back, only with more size and strength. So this allowed me to get my hands on the ball and make something happen with it far more often than our opponents might have thought I would. I liked to think of myself as a secret weapon. And though they wouldn’t admit it, the team often did as well. They just loved to not give me credit for being who I was, all because they were jealous of who my father was. I wasn’t sure why people constantly loved to put you down if you were born into wealth. My father sure wasn’t. Both of his parents were school teachers. He’d made his own way to become a huge Hollywood star by his own merit and talent. I had never gotten along with my father, but I’d always respected this about him.
I got back into position on the line and lined up against our B team. The ball was snapped and I broke through the tackle. I ran hard down the field and made my cut across before I turned around just in time to see the ball about to hit my chest. I tucked it into my arms and held on strongly as I ran towards the goal line.
Once my feet were across the end zone, I spiked the ball down and raised my hand in victory. A few of the guys gave me high fives as I jogged back towards the center of the field to run the play again. We’d been going at this same play over an hour now, but I could tell for whatever reason Coach Smith was not happy about how things were
going. What else did he want from us? We already pretended to kiss his stupid ass every chance we got. The guy was so insecure. It was hilarious and a bit disgusting all at the same time.
We ran the play again to great success, and then one more time before the coach decided we’d had enough and called it a day. I walked inside with the other guys feeling a bit tired and worn out. As I headed in, I smirked at the coach and he scowled back at me. Thus was the nature of our relationship. He hated me and I hated him. I was the only guy on the team who openly defied him and called him out on his idiotic crap. I was not afraid to stand up to him. I didn’t care if he tried to throw me off the team. Hell, he had recently. But I had my father make a call and the school board had a little chat with Smith about where his bread was buttered. He saw the light and came around to putting me back on the team.
And now the man hated my guts even more. But as much as he hated me, even he couldn’t deny that he needed my talent on his team. Even if I hadn’t told my father to make a phone call, the Coach would have come crawling back to me. Or he should have. With his ego, maybe he wouldn’t have allowed himself to do it. The jury was still out on that one.
I stepped into the shower and let the hot water wash over all of my muscles. There was some blood on forearm and I wasn’t entirely sure that it was mine. How had that happened? Hell if I knew. But no matter. Football was a tough game. That was one of the reasons I loved it so much. I could be physically dominate over other men in a socially acceptable manner and use my size to my advantage. I’m six foot four and I weigh two hundred and thirty pounds. I got my height from my supermodel mother who is five feet eleven, and my size from my father who has always been burly. It was a good mixture. I’ve never had problems with the opposite sex. Women have always flocked to me, and it wasn’t just the fame. As a matter of fact, the fame could be abit of a hindrance growing up in Hollywood. It wasn’t special or unique. No, people actually respected you more if you were something different, an outsider. I’d tried, but failed overall in this endeavor.
But eventually, I just started to believe in myself and be proud of who I was. It was a slow process, but I had to come to terms with it and realize that I was not my father and eventually others started to realize that as well. Then the ladies started flocking to me.
At the moment, I saw no reason to settle down with anyone. I wasn’t ready for it. There was too much fun to be had, too much life to live, and I was only twenty-two years old. Plus, I had a mission in front of me. I was going to play professional football. There was no way about it. That was going to be my life. I figured I’d sign right out of college and that by the time I was thirty, I would be a multi-millionaire and I could do whatever I wanted to do then.
I stepped out of the shower and dried off quickly, before heading over to my locker where Chance and Bobby were talking. I started getting dressed and overheard some of their conversation. They were talking about how they were going to take a camping trip at the end of the season together and they were going to celebrate the end of an era, the end of playing college football and wishing that good things would follow. They were both good guys and both great players. They both had a good shot of going forward into the NFL.
“You guys going as just the two of you?” I asked innocently.
“Yeah, unless you want to come along,” Chance said.
I shook my head and smirked. “Nah, I’ve never been much for camping, but I might be down with taking a lady on a romantic getaway.”
“Do you ever think about anything else?” Bobby asked.
“Not much,” I replied. “Come on guys. When you are looking back on this twenty years from now, you are going to wish that you’d gone out there and mingled with as many fine females as you possibly could.”
“Don’t you want something more?” Bobby asked. “Something real? Don’t you ever get tired of random women and short term flings?”
“Sure, it will get tiring—one day,” I said. “But right now, that is just not the case for me. And when I do find that one special lady I know that she will definitely be the one because I will have had the experience to know that. That’s what you guys are missing out on. Experience.”
“What? You are crazy,” Bobby said. “When you meet the right woman, it will just hit you.”
“And when do you think you are going to meet that special lady?” I asked. “Bobby, you aren’t going to do it by pledging your life to celibacy.”
“It’s just for the season,” Bobby said. “After we get our NFL contracts, then we can relax a bit and start enjoying life.”
I shook my head. What was he thinking? “That’s where you’re wrong, my friend. That is when the real work begins.”
“We can just agree to disagree,” Chance said with a grin. I had a feeling that he agreed with me more than he was letting on, but he was pretending to go along for Bobby’s benefit. Bobby was having a tough time of things. I could tell, I could see it. He was a good guy and I wanted to be patient and help him, but it was something he was going to have to work on himself and do what made him happy.
“Ok, well I am off,” I said. “I’ll see you guys later.”
I headed out into the warm evening air and started walking towards my car. I loved the college life. There was just something about being on the campus with so much positivity and change happening. Everyone was excited about what the future might bring, all happy about the dreams they were following, the friends they were making, and maybe the love they were finding. I had never really cared so much for those things. I was focused on one thing while I was here at school and that was making football my career and my life. That was it. Everything else was there for a bit of a distraction and to blow off some steam. This was necessary to keep my head in the game.
As far as women, well what the guys said was more or less true. I’d never had a really serious relationship, but I’d never met a woman that I clicked with that way. Some might say that my standards were ridiculously high, but I’ve always felt that if you want to be in love with someone then you’d better make damn sure that they are worth all of the sacrifice. Otherwise you are settling and settling for anything in life is more or less a waste of time. You know what you are worth, so why would you settle for less? That is how people look back with regret. I was never going to look back with regret on anything.
I made my way back to my place that I had off campus. I’d grown quickly tired of living in the dorms within two weeks as a freshman, so I rented a nice place about a five mile drive just off campus. It gave me the space and peace and quiet that I craved. I realized it did me no favors in telling people that I was not some rich brat, but I didn’t care.
When I got home, I was a bit surprised to see a cute, blonde girl with shoulder length hair wearing tank top and a pair of cutoff denim shorts waiting for me. Her name was Krista. I’d met her at the Par, a night club I frequented sometimes. It was a fun place that often had great drink specials and it seemed to attract the most beautiful and available ladies.
“Hey,” I said as I exited my car and walked up the walkway.
“Hey,” she replied back.
“I wasn’t expecting to see you,” I said.
“Well, you told me you wanted to get together again, and you never called me. So, I thought I’d swing by and see how serious you were about that.”
I laughed. “Yeah, I’ve been a bit sidetracked.”
I wrapped my arms around her, pulled her close, and kissed her softly. “You feel good. It’s great to see you.”
“Oh, yeah?”
“Yeah…”
I opened the door, kissed her softly, and then followed her inside.”
The night was about to get a lot more interesting than I’d even thought it might be. That was the fun of my life. Every day was unpredictable.
Chapter Two
Alexa
I knew he was in there. The bastard. He was in there doing exactly what I knew he was doing. I had suspected it for weeks. Seve
ral of my friends had noticed that there was something off and they’d urged me to investigate further. They knew that this might lead me down a dark road, a road to something that would frighten and terrify me to face, something that might have even sickened me. They were right. But I had to find out on my own about this. I could no longer sit idly by and wonder. It was time for me to take that chance.
The night around me was warm and dark. As I sat there in my car, the windows rolled down, I could hear the chirping of the birds, the crickets everywhere I couldn’t see, and the sound of my own heart breaking into a million pieces under the bright, silver moon that illuminated everything as it shone down its light over all of us.
I’d come this far. What was I waiting for? It was time for me to do this and get it over and done. There was no more time to wait.
I stepped out of the car and closed the door quietly. I’d parked down the street a ways so as not to alarm anyone inside the house. After making sure that no one was really watching me, I made my way around to the back of the house. The place was silent, dark as could be. Someone had forgotten to turn on the outside lights. It was all too easy for a burglar to break in and steal everything that they had.
It was almost too easy for me too. I suddenly felt like I was walking into a trap. After a moment, I steadied my nerves and convinced myself that it was all in my head. Nobody was expecting me.
